Exploits & Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician by Alfred Jarry, translated by Simon Watson Taylor
DEFINITION
An epiphenomenon is that which is superinduced upon a phenomenon.
Pataphysics. . . . is the science of that which is superinduced upon metaphysics, whether within or beyond the latter's limitations, extending as far beyond metaphysics as the latter extends beyond physics. Ex: an epiphenomenon being often accidental, pataphysics will be, above all, the science of the particular, despite the common opinion that the only science is that of the general. Pataphysics will examine the laws governing exceptions, and will explain the universe supplementary to this one; or, less ambitiously, will describe a universe which can be — and perhaps should be — envisaged in the place of the traditional one, since the laws that are supposed to have been discovered in the traditional universe are also correlations of exceptions, albeit more frequent ones, but in any case accidental data which, reduced to the status of unexceptional exceptions, possess no longer even the virtue of originality.
DEFINITION. Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions, which symbolically attributes the properties of objects, described by their virtuality, to their lineaments.
Contemporary science is founded upon the principle of induction: most people have seen a certain phenomenon precede or follow some other phenomenon most often, and conclude therefrom that it will ever be thus. Apart from other considerations, this is true only in the majority of cases, depends upon the point of view, and is codified only for convenience — if that! Instead of formulating the law of the fall of a body toward a center, how far more apposite would be the law of the ascension of a vacuum toward a periphery, a vacuum being considered a unit of non-density, a hypothesis far less arbitrary than the choice of a concrete unit of positive density such as water?
For even this body is a postulate and an average man's point of view, and in order that its qualities, if not its nature, should remain fairly constant, it would be necessary to postulate that the height of human beings should remain more or less constant and mutually equivalent. Universal assent is already a quite miraculous and incomprehensible prejudice. Why should anyone claim that the shape of a watch is round — a manifestly false proposition — since it appears in profile as a narrow rectangular construction, elliptic on three sides; and why the devil should one only have noticed its shape at the moment of looking at the time? — Perhaps under the pretext of utility. But a child who draws a watch as a circle will also draw a house as a square, as a façade, without any justification, of course; because, except perhaps in the country, he will rarely see an isolated building, and even in a street the façades have the appearance of very oblique trapezoids.
We must, in fact, inevitably admit that the common herd (including small children and women) is too dimwitted to comprehend elliptic equations, and that its members are at one in a so-called universal assent because they are capable of perceiving only those curves having a single focal point, since it is easier to coincide with one point rather than with two. These people communicate and achieve equilibrium by the outer edge of their bellies, tangentially. But even the common herd has learned that the real universe is composed of ellipses, and tradesmen keep their wine in barrels rather than cylinders. (pp. 21-23)

1.1 Czym jest patafizyka?
Aby jawnie zaprzeczyć wszystkim słowom przestrogi wygłoszonym do tej pory w tym pierwszym rozdziale, zwróćmy się teraz natychmiast do najpopularniejszej w użyciu definicji patafizyki:
Patafizyka to nauka o wyobrażonych rozwiązaniach.
Jakkolwiek kusząco i ostatecznie brzmiąca byłaby ta odpowiedź, jest ona jednak tylko fragmentem znacznie dłuższej i bogatszej definicji, zaproponowanej przez francuskiego poetę Alfreda Jarry'ego w dziele napisanym w latach 1897-1898 i wydanym pośmiertnie w 1911 roku: "Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician: A Neo-Scientific Novel" (Jarry, 2006 [1911]).
W przypadku Jarry'ego możemy prześledzić drogę patafizyki od jego wczesnych lat szkolnych w Lycée Rennes, kiedy to on i jego towarzysze wyśmiewali się z nauczyciela Hérberta, twierdząc, że uczy ich patafizyki. W miarę jak Jarry torował swoją drogę do Paryża, wygórowane figle i ich główny obiekt drwin dojrzewały do zamanifestowania się w postaci Ubu Roi, głównego bohatera osławionej sztuki o tym samym tytule, która w słynny sposób wywołała zamieszki podczas jej otwarcia i zamknięcia 10 grudnia 1896 roku w Théâtre de l'Œuvre.
Następnie Ubu przeobraził się w doktora Faustrolla, tytułową postać "Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician: A Neo-Scientific Novel", która oferuje następujący fragment ekstrawagancji:
Epifenomen to coś, co nakłada się na zjawisko. Jarry jest kluczową postacią dla patafizyki, ponieważ stworzył on nie tylko szereg przełomowych tekstów patafizycznych, ale także sztuki teatralne, architekturę, grafikę i wiele innych dziedzin patafizyki. O ile łatwo przypisać tę skłonność czystemu patafizycznemu blaskowi Jarry'ego, o tyle należy pamiętać, że Jarry nie zbudował wokół siebie kultu w ramach swojej artykulacji patafizycznego wymiaru wszechświata (co zostanie rozwinięte w rozdziale 2: Zaćmienie metafizyki).
Jak ujmuje to późniejszy wicekurator Collège de 'Pataphysique, Opach: "Upieram się, tu i teraz, że nawet gdyby Jarry nigdy nie istniał, to i tak bylibyśmy patafizykami, a więc pewnego razu i tak wymyślilibyśmy 'patafizykę'" (Brotchie, 1995).
Collège de 'Pataphysique został założony w 1948 roku jako instytucja poświęcona świadomemu studiowaniu patafizyki, "tych najważniejszych i najpoważniejszych ze wszystkich problemów: jedynych, które są ważne i poważne" (http://www.college-de-pataphysique.fr/). Podczas gdy sama patafizyka przenika czas i umysły w swojej czystej iluminacyjnej chwale, założenie Collège, z jego zawiłą hierarchią, statuetkami, ceremoniami, wydziałami itd. wskazuje na fundamentalną różnicę między patafizyką świadomą a nieświadomą. Od tego czasu na całym świecie powstało wiele innych instytutów i inicjatyw, jak np. wizualnie udokumentowane przez "Patakosmos - Pataphysical Terrrestrial and Extraterrestrial Institutes Tourist Map" (http://patakosmos.com).
Wraz z przenikaniem patafizyki do całego świata warto również wspomnieć o jej promienistym wpływie na kolejne ruchy awangardowe, takie jak dadaizm, surrealizm, futuryzm, sytuacjonizm i oulipoizm oraz postmodernizm (np. Bök, 2002; Levy & Rabaté, 2005). Co ciekawe, w przeciwieństwie do ogólnego zmęczenia odczuwanego w tym zróżnicowanym paśmie -izmów, patafizyce udało się przejść „pod radarem”. Na początku pojęcie instytutu patafizycznego może wydawać się sprzeczne z samą patafizyką. Dla niewprawnego oka, które na pierwszy rzut oka spotyka Collège de 'Pataphysique, może się on wydawać szczytem akademickiego samozadowolenia i sekciarskich przekonań. Zamiast po prostu uosabiać te cechy, Collège raczej demonstruje swoją patafizyczną świadomość poprzez tę jednocześnie najpoważniejszą i najbardziej śmieszną egzystencję.

The Isle of Her from Alfred Jarry’s 1911 novel Gestes et Opinions du Docteur Faustroll, Pataphysicien. The map comes from The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (the revised and expanded edition published in 2000), written by Alberto Manguel and Gianni Guadalupi and illustrated by Graham Greenfield and Eric Beddows. The title page says, “Maps and Charts by James Cook.” I’m not sure whether that’s a real credit or a facetious reference to the eighteenth century explorer.
I checked this book out shortly after this edition was published, and the descriptions of Jarry’s bizarre locales really stuck in my mind. I still haven’t read Docteur Faustroll, however.

Pataphysics (French: pataphysique) is a "philosophy" of science invented by French writer Alfred Jarry (1873–1907)[1] intended to be a parody of science.[2] Difficult to be simply defined or pinned down, it has been described as the "science of imaginary solutions".

'Pataphysics was a concept expressed by Jarry in a mock-scientific manner, with undertones of spoofing and quackery, as expounded in his novel Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician. Here, Jarry toyed with conventional concepts and interpretations of reality.[4] Another attempt at a definition interprets 'pataphysics as an idea that "the virtual or imaginary nature of things as glimpsed by the heightened vision of poetry or science or love can be seized and lived as real".[1] Jarry defines 'pataphysics in a number of statements and examples, including that it is "the science of imaginary solutions, which symbolically attributes the properties of objects, described by their virtuality, to their lineaments".[5] A practitioner of 'pataphysics is a pataphysician or a pataphysicist.

Patafizyka jest pojęciem wyrażonym przez Alfreda Jarry'ego w sposób prześmiewczo-naukowy, z podtekstem spoofingu i quackeryzmu, co zostało wyrażone w powieści "Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician" .
Jarry bawił się tu konwencjonalnymi pojęciami i interpretacjami rzeczywistości. Inna próba definicji interpretuje 'patafizykę jako ideę, że "wirtualna lub wyobrażeniowa natura rzeczy, dostrzeżona przez podwyższoną wizję poezji lub nauki, lub miłości, może być uchwycona i przeżywana jako prawdziwa".
Słowo patafizyka jest formacją umowną, wywodzącą się z greckiego τὰ ἐπὶ τὰ μεταφυσικά (tà epì tà metàphusiká), zwrotu lub wyrażenia oznaczającego "to, co jest ponad metafizyką", i samo jest chytrą wariacją na temat tytułu Metafizyki Arystotelesa, który po grecku brzmi "τὰ μετὰ τὰ φυσικά" (ta meta ta physika).
Jarry nakazał włączenie apostrofu do ortografii, 'pataphysique i 'pataphysics, "...aby uniknąć prostego kalamburu".
Słowa pataphysician lub pataphysicist oraz przymiotnik pataphysical nie powinny zawierać apostrofu. Jedynie w przypadku świadomego odniesienia do samej nauki Jarry'ego słowo patafizyka powinno nosić apostrof. Termin patafizyka jest paronimem (uważanym w języku francuskim za rodzaj kalamburu) metafizyki. Ponieważ apostrof w żaden sposób nie wpływa na znaczenie czy wymowę patafizyki, taka pisownia terminu jest chytrą notacją, dla czytelnika, sugerującą różne kalambury, które słuchacze mogą usłyszeć, lub być świadomi. Do tych kalamburów należą patte à physique ("łapa fizyki") w interpretacji badaczy Jarry'ego, Keitha Beaumonta i Rogera Shattucka, pas ta physique ("nie twoja fizyka") oraz pâte à physique ("pasta z fizyki").
