I saw something on the road last week that I’ve never seen before. A canary yellow crew cab Chevy Silverado truck. What was special about this one was its colour. Canary yellow is not a common colour on any truck, or car for that matter. The common colour for these trucks is red. There are so many red Silverados around Calgary alone I long ago gave up looking to see if the one passing by me was being driven by my son, whose company has a fleet of them. I don’t know why there are so many red Silverados. I did a quick google search to find out if anyone else has observed this but could dig up nothing. However, the search did bring up a few pages dedicated to explaining what the colour of your vehicle says about you. That was a fun read. Apparently, black is the preferred colour for people who want to exude a sense of power and elegance. White is chosen by people who are fastidious, who like their car and life to be super tidy and clean. (During Calgary’s chinooks these people must go crazy).

Red, apparently, is chosen by people who have a zest for life and are filled with energy. They are dynamic and outgoing. This friend certainly has a great zest for life but is quiet in a crowd. When he bought his wine red truck he was fulfilling a dream he had nurtured for years. He felt this vehicle truly did express how he feels about being a part of Alberta’s dynamic and positive approach to life. My son, on the other hand, whose Silverado is bright red, while not necessarily a seeker of attention, doesn’t shy away from opportunities to entertain a crowd of friends and family.

So maybe the author of the article had something. But I wouldn’t start making calls about the character of the owner of black, white, or red vehicles. Most of us just buy the best deal on the lot or in auto trader, don’t we? When I managed to position myself in the right place, which wasn’t too difficult at 11:45 a.m. (don’t try this during rush hour), the scene inside was to me the perfect match for a canary yellow extended cab truck.

The driver was a young woman. Her hair was gathered into a neat pony tail, her face devoid of any obvious makeup. (I couldn’t get that close.) She was wearing a light grey coat, maybe a hoodie. She had both hands on the top of the steering wheel and her eyes focused straight ahead. She drove to the maximum allowable speed and with purpose. She clearly was on her way to somewhere pronto as she moved into the far left lane whenever she found herself slowed by a vehicle in the middle. She was a good driver.

In the passenger seat was a young man. Asleep, his chin on his chest and head bouncing up and down with the movement of the truck. His hair was short and neat. The only surprise was that he was not wearing a Carhartt. (Carhartt is the standard go to brand of coat for working guys.) The coat he was wearing had a similar mustardy brown colour, but it also had a fur lined hood. Still, the coat looked practical.

He ordered his prized Silverado in that colour, I thought. His stylish coat made sense. Maybe his girlfriend gave it to him. He’s working hard to make the payments on that truck. Probably in the oil patch, maybe somewhere south of Calgary rather than Fort McMurray since they were heading north. Did he just get back into town after two weeks in a camp somewhere out on the cold prairie? Did his girlfriend pick him up at a drop off point? But that would mean he didn’t have his truck out on the site. Hmmm…. Maybe they just picked it up from the dealer? But then wouldn’t he want to drive it?

Hey, maybe it’s her truck! Why did I assume it was his?

I know a lot of women who love their trucks. And of course I know plenty who love their cars. I have a cousin in Vancouver who, after years of building her own successful menswear business, sold it and bought her dream car. A Porsche. Dark grey. I actually got to drive it. She wanted me to take it out on the highway to really drive it, but I didn’t have the nerve.

The canary yellow Silverado looked brand new and was truly a standout on Deerfoot Trail. Having heard about Ford’s plans to roll out hybrid and fully electric F150’s next year, I wondered if this might already be happening with the Silverados, so I googled the question. I was surprised to learn that at this point Chevy has no such plans.

Since I will soon need to replace my gunmetal black Chevy Trailblazer I am paying close attention to what manufacturers are doing in terms of hybrids and electrics. The shift toward these kinds of vehicles is underway, and though I have no idea when we will hit the tipping point, I don’t want to end up stuck with a conventional truck or car that I cannot sell.

There is now a company in Calgary, GoElectric, that is selling used electric vehicles that the owner buys in California and brings up here. This laid off oil patch engineer also does conversions – changing out conventional engines for electric motors. Apparently, he is the only business like this in the entire country. Right here in oil and gas country, where the solutions to pollution and the evolution of energy supply is happening, thanks to the amazing can-do attitude of people like the GoElectric guy and that girl behind the wheel of that canary yellow truck.
