The Watcher.
Tw: exteme religion,religious delusion,dissociation(??)/Derealization
(Please tell me if any other tws are needed)
Cw: Aether as traveller
Someone was watching him.
Aether could feel the eyes on him, always watching,no matter where he was,no matter what he did. No matter if he was awake or asleep, someone was always watching.
He didn't know who it was,and he didn't think he wanted to know. If he didn't know,if he didn't stop to think about it,he could feel at least a little at peace with the eyes.
He knew the walls had ears, people had told him that. People had whispered it under baited breath. What they hadn't told him however, was that the walls had eyes. Everything did. The sky,the sun, people he spoke too. They all seemed to keep their eyes trained on him. Watching.
Everything seemed fake. Even his dear Paimon was hiding something. Or more like, some one. Someone who knew of his presence, who knew of his past, and was bent on watching him all the time. Making sure that his every movement was seen and recorded under a watchful gaze.
The more he realized this, the more paranoid he became. What could he do to stop the watching? To get even a minute of privacy.
Privacy. It seemed like a distant dream now,the idea, the facade of having time and space to yourself. Privacy wasn't real. It was a fake, made up idea meant to give hope.
After awhile,he began to think of the one watching him as a God of sorts. After all,how else would they be watching him day in and day out, never letting up? How could they, unless they were a divine being of sorts?
He now worships the being, who he calls "The Watcher",fervently. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe.
That was the mantra he had begun to repeat daily, whispering and talking to himself as he looked around paranoidly. To others he looked crazy. A sad man wandering the world in search for a sister no one had seen, worshipping a God no one had heard of.
But that was ok with Aether. After all,The Watcher didn't think he was crazy. And that was all that mattered.
The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe. The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe…The watcher protects. The watcher loves. The watcher is compassion and kindness itself. The watcher keeps you safe……..

Ahhh the latest installment to the cult au is so depressing. I've never thought of it that way. I'd be so did heartened if anyone I meet immediately reverts back to a cold and formal front despite the progress made. And since you said Thoma specifically, I was like 😭😭😭 cause he's one of the most wholesome (probably the top in the husbandos line) character and not being able to get close to him (and in extension other characs) is so lonely. I'd probably emotionally distant myself from the archons cause despite their reasons, they're still the indirect cause of why I'd be so alone and it'd be so stifling to be ard them
answer under the cut bc it's super long lmao
i could see them warming up to the reader after some time, but even then, there's be some kind of animosity because of the archons. it's understandable why they would be so scared because you're this unknown force to teyvat that has seemingly rendered their own god an obedient dog whenever you're around. think about it: no one knows who or what you are, but you're surrounded and served by beings who-- to them-- are untouchable.
you could definitely try to befriend them as best as you can, but the presence of people like zhongli and baal make it so difficult to even hold a conversation. yes, you're kind. yes, you're protected by the strongest being in teyvat. but it becomes so lonely because no one's willing to take the risk of getting stabbed all for what? one conversation.
playable characters don't really join the cult or realize you're their god until one of the other characters they trust tells them, unless they are archons or characters that have "connections" to a higher being. take xiao for example, he wouldn't even have known who or what you were until zhongli had to tell him. diluc wouldn't even give a shit until venti tells him of this oh, so magnificent being who this world was meant for. fischl? oh, she just knows you're real.
everyone in the resistance wouldn't truly know what their god looks like except for kokomi. baal could tell them, but do they really trust her after the vision hunt? of course, you'd be treated with some hostility and apprehension at first. even if kokomi didn't tell them, aether, the traveler, eventually would after coming to inazuma for you.
just imagine how devastated ayaka and thoma would be once they found out who you truly were. they were acting so rude and cruel to you! they should be ashamed in themselves for making you feel so much of an outsider. ayaka feels like crying, and thoma... oh, boy. he's acting like a dejected puppy.
when you see them again, they'll be asking and begging for your forgiveness. you're happy that they're no longer so weary of you, but now, they're starting to act more like servants than friends. the world of teyvat is supposed to be filled to the brim with people waiting to befriend, so why does it feel so lonely?
