Losses and Gains Part 2
In which Rinne breaks into a house
Rinne definitely should have planned this better. He paused to lean against a tree, gasping for breath. Bootcamp didn’t prepare him enough for this. He was cold, alone, and had no idea where to go.
Taking a deep breath, He stood up and began to walk deeper into the woods. There should be a town or something nearby, he was sure of that. He sighed, running his thumb over the button of the pokeball.
It was night. The dead of night at that. However, he could swear he could see alight in the distance. Now, it could be a pokemon, but he wasn’t sure. But in the chance, that it was a place to stay for the night, he would take his chance.
Rinne moved closer and closer to the light, slowly seeing that it was, in fact, a house.
He let out a sigh of relief as he scrambled closer, breaking into a run. He had no idea how or why he was so excited to get inside all of a sudden, but he kept up the pace.
Soon, he was there.
The windows were emitting a soft orange glow through the dirty glass. He pressed his hands to the glass, peering inside. There didn’t seem to be anyone inside, so he took his opportunity to sneak around to the door and break in.
It had been a good while since he had picked a lock, but he managed to make quick work of it. Carefully and quietly, he opened the door.
As he stepped inside, he was blasted with a wonderful smell. It was savory, herby, and smelled distinctly of meat. Cooking meat with sage and thyme. He wiped the drool from his mouth as he approached the stove.
He had no idea why he was so hungry all of a sudden, but it smelled incredible.
As he lifted the pot's lid, a paw smacked his hand, causing him to cry out in surprise.
Looking up, he saw an angry pansage glaring down at him.
“Wha-” He was cut off by the pansage smacking him again, letting out an angry cry. Rinne stumbled back, clutching his quickly bruising cheek as he called out Inkay.
“Shadow ball!” Just as Inkay sent out the attack, a figure entered the kitchen, turning on the overhead light, flooding the room with white light.
“WHAT IN ARCEUS’ NAME IS GOING ON?”
“SHIT!” Rinne spun around to see an angry man around his age with grey hair brandishing a cast iron skillet.
“Wait! I can explain-” But then everything fell to black as the skillet swung down.
Rinne groaned as he woke up, head throbbing. He tried to stand but found that he couldn’t move. Groaning quietly, he looked down and saw that he was tied to a chair with…vines?
Everything came back in a flash, mainly the fight with the pansage and the rushed encounter with the grey-haired teen.
He looked up, seeing the person from before, arms crossed and tapping his foot.
“So, you’re finally awake?”
“Yeah, I am.” Rinne has never expected his interrogation training to come in handy now, but you never knew what life was going to give you.
“Now, I should be calling the police right now, seeing as you’re a rocket grunt who just broke in-”
“Hey! I’m not with them!”
“Oh yeah? Then what’s with your shirt?” Rinne looked down to see that he was still wearing his rocket uniform.
“...shit. Look, I can explain!”
“Sure. Go ahead. It’ll tell me exactly what I need to inform emergency services of.”
“There’s no need to call them since I’m not with Team Rocket.”
“You’re literally in their uniform.”
“Yes, but I’m not with them.”
“And how exactly is that supposed to make sense?”
“Okay, so MAYBE I used to be with Team Rocket, but then I deserted, and now you’re just tying up and civilian.” Niki looked at him for a moment before sighing.
“You’d better not be lying.”
“I’m not. Pinky promise.”
As the teen cut off the ropes in awkward silence, Rinne spoke up.
“So, what’s your name?”
“Niki.”
“Nice. I’m Rinne.”
“...why’d you run away?”
“I don’t want to talk about it…” Niki nodded.
“...do you want some soup?”
“Yeah! Soup sounds awesome!” Rinne stood up, stretching his arms and rubbing his wrists as he stretched.
“How long was I out?”
“Long enough for me to wrangle your Inkay.” Rinne looked around, a small pit of concern growing in his stomach.
“Well… where is he?”
“He’s in the corner there, taking a nap.” Niki gestured with the ladle he was holding before scooping some soup into a mug. Rinne looked to see that he was, in fact, right. His inkay was snoozing in the corner on a small pile of pillows with Niki’s pansage.
Niki handed Rinne the soup, which he eagerly drank down.
“...thanks. For not calling the cops and all that.” Niki shrugged.
“Eh. So, what are you going to do now that you’re not a part of Team Rocket?” Rinne paused mid-slurp, looking up at him from where he was sitting on the floor.
“M’not sure.”
“Well, there’s a league center not far from here. You could try to enter that. Could be fun.” Rinne’s eyes widened from excitement at the idea.
“Yeah! It's probably the best option anyways. Keeps us moving, and it’s a great way to earn cash and a fierce reputation!”
“Hold on!” Niki spun to look at him, cheeks puffed out in frustration.
“What’s all this ‘we’ stuff?”
“I mean, now that you’ve harbored me for the night, it’s not like you have much of a choice but to be on the run.”
“Oh really.”
“Yeah! Team Rocket is gonna hunt you down, maybe even kidnap you! Then you’ll never be seen again.” Rinne wiggled the fingers in his free hand, trying to make a scary face.
Niki wasn’t amused, although his brow was now knit together tightly. He was quiet for a moment before sighing.
“Y’know what? I’ve waited for him long enough. We’d best get going as early as we can since it’s your fault I’m probably going to die after I offered you a place to stay out of the kindness of my heart.” Rinne snorted in amusement but nodded.
“Alright, sounds fair. I’ll see you in the morning then.”

Zuko x Gender Neutral Reader

The knot in your stomach tightened with every step you took. You had been in many battles before, but never this unmatched. This time, you almost felt like there was no hope and at the same time like there was no room for failure. Other times you have been able to hold your own, but this time you felt defenseless even with help.
“What’s wrong?” Zuko stopped when you did even if you hadn’t noticed your feet had stopped moving.
“I...” You gulped, pressing your palm against your queasy stomach. “I’m not sure I can do this”
He frowned, showing empathy yet also determined. Taking a deep breath, he squared his shoulders up before placing one hand over yours.
“It’s normal to be afraid” His voice was surprisingly kind and comforting even through the seriousness his tone held. “But we can do this”
Ashamed, you averted your gaze. Failure wasn’t your only fear. You were overwhelmed with the possibility of dying, of facing your last battle. You didn’t want to die...
“I am being selfish” You finally said when you felt Zuko softly squeezing your shoulder. “Instead of worrying for what’s important, for the future of the world... all I can think about is if I will die”
“No one blames you for that” He replied, now being the one to look away. “I’m... I’m afraid too, but as long as we look after each other it will be okay”
You smiled a little at his words, daring to look into his eyes. In them, you found the hope you needed. That heaviness inside you remained, but felt a tad lighter now.
Filled with resolve and determination, you nodded your head. Zuko did too, and the two of you continued walking. The silence was suffocating and unbearable, but it soon ended.
Before your eyes was the personification of that which you feared, your biggest threat yet. There was Azula, smirking and taunting her brother. He paused, seizing her up as well. However, he didn’t take long to act. When he took a step forward, you held on to his arm.
“Be careful, Zuko” You urged him as soon as his eyes landed on you. “She won’t have mercy”
He frowned in determination and gently pushed you away.
“Neither will I” Was his reply as he continued approaching her. But you knew what he said wasn’t true.
“I’ll help you” You declared as a new, even bigger fear settled in your heart. The fear of losing Zuko.
“No” His eyes fell over you only for a moment as he went back to watch Azula. “She won’t be alone, I need you to clear off her guards”
Someone placed a hand in your arm, and upon looking over your shoulder you found with Katara’s kind blue eyes. She had come to help you as well.
Reading the expression in her face, you understood what she was thinking.
“I...” You said to Zuko, resigned. “I have your back”
“Thank you” Were his last words to you as he walked away, perhaps forever.
Watching him go, you prayed to all superior beings to protect him. A sigh escaped your lips as he took a defensive pose to face his sister. Ready to firebend, ready to fight. Fight for his life.
“He needs to do this alone” Katara reminded you, to which you could only nod. The knot in your stomach seemed to have spread to your throat and make you unable to talk.
You exchanged a concerned glance with her as you heard them start to bend. Turning your head, you saw the energy emanating from their hands. Fire and electricity clashing, feet moving in sync in response to the other’s movements, agile bodies dodging attacks, attentive eyes following each of the opponent’s actions, brows furrowed in concentration to read the other’s strategies.
In the meantime, like Zuko had predicted, Azula’s guards appeared. Not losing one second, you and Katara began fighting them off. Even if your focus was elsewhere, as you couldn’t stop worrying about Zuko.
Paying attention to Azula, you noticed her eyes keep drifting to you and Katara. A hunch grew in your gut. She would not only attack Zuko, but those he cared about as well. Fortunately, he seemed to realize this as he inched closer to the two of you without losing sight of his sister.
Frustrated by her foiled attempts, Azula did something to deceive him. Feigning to attack you and Katara, Zuko dropped his defences. She then took advantage of his moment of weakness and smirked in satisfaction. Moving for her real target, Azula aimed for him while he was still too busy meaning to protect you two.
Your heart sped up and began thumping inside your chest. If her bolt of lightning hit Zuko, it could kill him. It probably would. You couldn’t let that happen.
Throwing all rationality out of the window, with it including all your worries and nerves about the battle, you moved. You jumped in front of Zuko.
Your entire world seemed to suddenly vanish with the impact of Azula’s lightning, only replaced by blinding pain. Wanting to somehow let it out, you opened your mouth to scream but the sound got caught in your throat.
“No!!!” Zuko screamed at the top of his lungs, and in his anger he targeted such a powerful blast of fire against his sister that it sent her flying backwards.
“Y/N!” Katara ran to your aid while he made sure that Azula was out of combat.
You found yourself lying on the ground. At what point you had fallen, you couldn’t tell. You couldn’t move, you couldn’t breathe, you could barely keep your eyes open.
Soon, your friends arrived to kneel by your side. Katara had tears in her eyes, and Zuko’s shocked terrified expression was something you had never witnessed before.
“Why would you do that?” He exclaimed, struggling to breathe and speak. “I’m not... You shouldn’t have... not for me...”
“I...” You groaned, your face contorting in pain as the effects of Azula’s lightning lingered in your body. “I’m... I’m not afraid anymore...”
Death suddenly didn’t seem so bad. It was worth it as long as you had saved Zuko. He was safe and unharmed, everything else seemed not to matter as much. You were at peace.
“Y/N, no...” Zuko said, understanding what you were implying.
“All I was really afraid was... of losing you...”
“Dammit...” Zuko clenched his fists, clinging on to your clothes like he could anchor you to life if he held you strong enough. You could see his eyes were turning watery before he closed them.
“You’re not gonna die” Katara assured you. “Not if I can do something about it”
Both you and Zuko observed her in awe as she pulled out some water from her pendant. As she bended the liquid and aimed it towards your deep wound, you felt a gentle tingle in that spot. For a moment it smarted, but then it turned into a pleasant tickling. The pain lessened until it began subsiding.
“Are you okay?” Zuko asked you, gingerly helping you sit up.
You paused for a moment, noticing that Katara’s healing abilities seemed to have worked. The impact of the lightning still resonated in your bones, and there were a few traces left of that pain, but... you were okay.
To answer his question, you nodded your head.
“I will never make that mistake ever again” Zuko promised, suddenly pushing you against his chest and engulfing you into a desperate hug.
“And you better not scare us like that ever again” Katara told you, giving you a tight hug as well.
Exhausted and speechless, you only chuckled as you hugged them back.

Athena’s Journal, Day 1-2 Entry 1
I guess it’s time to get started with everything, isn’t it? I got my first Pokémon yesterday, but so much happened that I couldn’t really write.
Sorry, everyone.
A very nice lady has been letting me stay at her house the past few days. At first I felt really bad, but she’s always talking about how she’s always wanted a girl around the house. Yesterday, she told me she heard from Professor Kukui, and that I need to get to Iki Town. She even showed me the best way to go!
Except, on the way...I almost got attacked by a Yungoos! It was...pretty scary...
But then this Rowlet showed up out of nowhere and scared it off, and then just sat on my head. The professor and the other two starter Pokémon, Litten and Popplio, weren’t that far behind, but I think my choice was made for me by then.
So now I’ve got this sweet girl with my. Her name is Noctua.
After that, we all walked up to Iki Town together, and it wasn’t long before I met another kid named Hau. He’s...a lot younger than me, but I guess he still counts as my rival? It’s a little weird being 17 and having and 11 year-old rival...He said he was excited to get his partner, Popplio, and then challenged me to my first real trainer battle! I feel a little bad, though, because I had the type advantage.
Noctua was checking up on Popplio after the battle, though. She seems very supportive and...motherly, I guess.
Hau ran off, but it turns out the Island Kahuna wasn’t waiting for us like he said he was going to be. So, since I’m new to the island, the professor suggested I go up to the Ruins of Conflict just north of town. That’s where the island deity lives, he said. And-oh, oh yeah.
I’m...I’m not really supposed to talk about what happened after but...it should be okay, right? No one in Alola sees these...
Up on the trail, I saw this really pretty girl being dragged by her duffel bag. Not by anything holding the bag, but the bag itself. And since we were going the same way, I followed.
When we got to the bridge outside the ruins, a Pokémon popped out of the bag! or, I think it was a Pokémon I think. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Before I could get a good look at it though, it was attacked by some wild Spearow. And that’s when the girl saw me and Noctua, and asked us to save ‘Nebby’.
Honestly, it was really, really scary. The Spearow were pretty tough, and I actually had to walk out on the bridge-which actually gave way! So I was falling, holding ‘Nebby’, while Noctua was clutching my jacket like she could try to carry us.
The only reason I can write this is because we were saved by the island deity, Tapu Koko.
I don’t know...how to explain what happened. But it felt familiar. But that doesn’t make any sense, does it?
But yeah, we were saved, and then the girl, Lillie, thanked me, and handed me something Tapu Koko dropped, and we walked back to Iki Town together. Thankfully the professor was there, and the Kahuna, Hala, not long after. They seemed really happy and...impressed, I guess? I didn’t really do anything. Just the right thing...right? But they invited me to join in a festival that was happening later. To get me ready, Professor Kukui gave me some pokéballs and encouraged me to go try to catch some stuff. He gave me a ‘dex, too.
I actually caught a bunch of Pokémon, but the only ones that I think are really of note are Nubbin, my Grubbin, and Lapin, my Buneary. Along with Noctua, the three of them make a pretty good team. We got a lot of training in before the festival.
On my way over, though...I ran into some really, really weird people. For the longest time, they just kept looking at me, like they thought I couldn’t see them or something. And then they didn’t even introduce themselves; they just...said some weird stuff and walked away. Mostly about how I wasn’t ‘from here’. I mean...I’m not. I’m from Kalos, but...that didn’t sound like what they were saying.
I didn’t get much time to think on it, because the festival started. Apparently, since Tapu Koko loves Pokémon battles, one of the events is having two newbie trainers face off. That happened to be Hau and me.
I really wanted Lapin to get in some battling, but Noctua really had no trouble against his Pichu and Popplio. Maybe next time.
Afterwards, Kahuna Hala gave me a bracelet called a Z-ring, along with an Island Challenge symbol. So...I guess I’m officially a trainer now.
I found the lady I’m staying with and we went home for the night. But the whole time I felt like something was watching me...not those people, either.
--
Lille came and got me this morning; apparently the professor wanted to see me. So I followed her there. The lab is...kind of a mess. It looks nothing like Professor Sycamore’s lab back in Lumiose. But Professor Kukui was happy to see me, and even happier to mess around with my PokéDex, which...now has a Rotom in it?
I know Rotom can possess machines, but I hadn’t heard about specifically building hardware for Rotom. But that’s apparently what my ‘dex is. And Rotom can talk, too! But right now he’s kinda shy, so we haven’t said much to each other.
Hau came over, and the four of us had lunch and talked about what Hau and I are going to be doing. Professor Kukui wants me to head over to the Trainer’s School before anything else, even though I told him I’ve already had enough school...but I’ll go. Won’t be the same without my favorite teacher, though...
So I’m heading over there soon. I thought I might see what kind of Pokémon are around here. I battled a trainer who had an Inkay. Maman really, really doens’t like Inkay, but I kinda want to see what they’re like.
It’s okay as long as Maman doesn’t have to meet it, right?
