Royce Clayton Memorial High School Shooting Victims (Trigger Warning)

This is a subject matter that I intend to handle with as much gentleness and respect as I can. As someone who lives in America, though, it is something that I feel happens much too often, and this story is my way of getting my emotions about it out, without causing an argument. This story is not a political debate. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions on gun control/gun safety.

When we get to this point in the story, there will, of course, be a trigger warning. These are fictional victims.

Wasquehal: de andere vrouwen.

Een interessant tornooi vlakbij de grens, en dan zou je denken.... allen daarheen... wel, in ieder geval niet bij de vrouwen...

/-48kg. (Jente wordt 5°)

Vochten gelijktijdig op dezelfde mat als Fiona, dus heb ik een beetje kunnen volgen. Jente Verstraeten (°01) als enige Belgische (waalse), en dus als 1ste-jaars junior, staat ze hier als youngster in die zin in een toch wel sterke reeks.

Jente Verstraeten (°01; FFBJ) 5° (2 ovwn) Tanya Zafy (°97) is qua uitslagen geen hoogvlieger dus dat lukte probleemloos: houdgreep na 2′45″min; Toen ze /-40kg vocht, werd Suzanne Zegers (°92) aanzien als beloftevol talent (5° & 3° op het EK u17), maar later bleek ze toch niet geheel door te breken en zit nu al geruime tijd op ECup-niveau te judoën. En ze komt ook altijd wel iemand tegen in /-48kg die haar belet om Nederlands kampioene te worden (5x 2° en 2x 3° in de laatste 9 jaar); Suzanne is dus de tegenstander van Jente in 1/4-finale: en Jente was de betere, maar moest toch heel de kamp zéér alert blijven want Suzanne heeft ervaring zat natuurlijk; wat Jente zeer goed doet is doorlopend storen en dreigen met ko-soto; dit is ook de inleiding tot haar waza-ari score, en voldoende voor een 1/2-finale tegen Melanie Vieu (°98; Fra); nu, dat is meteen ook een ander niveau: net 1ste-jaars senior nu, maar was top in Frankrijk als u21: 4 NK medailles en 3 ECups /-48kg gewonnen; concurrentie genoeg trouwens in eigen land: Marine Lhenry (°94), Marine Gilly (°97), Charlene Quilghini (°99), Justine Deleuil (°97) of Shirine Boukli (°99), allemaal medailles gepakt op Europees- en/of wereld-niveau bij de jeugd; anders dus dan in België, al mogen we al niet klagen met Anne-Sophie Jura en Loïs Petit, en nu Jente; Jente moet doorlopend de kamp ondergaan tegen Vieu: na 20″sec reeds waza-ari tegen; 2 shido’s tegen ook, en uiteindelijk belandt ze in houdgreep in de laatste minuut; een overwinning zat er hier nooit echt in; Voor brons heeft ze dan pech om te moeten vechten tegen Elisa Adrasti (°96; Ita); een topper geweest bij de jeugd /-44kg (5° EK u21 was haar beste ooit, maar een pak ECup medailles (9x bij de u21)); en ondertussen al veel ervaring bij de seniors /-48kg, met 2 ECup medailles dit jaar (3° Uster & 3° Bratislava) en 5° WCup Luxembourg; de Italiaanse scoort waza-ari (met maki-komi dacht ik) en net voor tijd, in ne-waza, draait ze Jente om (wat Jorre ook vaak probeert) en osai-komi; game-over, en net geen podium dus.

Mooie finale overigens tussen Melanie Vieu (1°) en Sephora Corcher (°96); die laatste was dan weer een topper /-48kg bij de jeugd (3°EK en 3°WK in 2015); dit en vorig jaar lukte het echter minder bij de seniors.

/-52kg. (Jolien Berton wordt 5°)

Jolien Berton (°01; Eernegem; 2° BK u21/-48kg, na Loïs Petit): 5° (1 ovwn) Ze wint eerst van Elsa Suares (Fra), maar verliest vervolgens (ippon) van Gabrielle Wuillot (2°) en Pauline Tancré (3°). Olivia Filippetto (°02; FFBJ; Top Judo Tournai): 9° (0 ovwn) gewoon te jong, en al zeker in haar nieuwe gewicht.

/-57kg.

Carla Augustin (°01; FFBJ): 9° (0 ovwn) Clemence Dubois (°01; FFBJ): out (0 ovwn) Esmeralda Puts (°95; Ned) van het United vrouwen-team, werd eervol 3°.

/-63kg.

Alessia Corrao (°02; FFBJ; 1°EK & 3°WK u18 dit jaar): out (0 ovwn) --- de kloof tussen een Cadet en een doorwinterde Franse senior (van goed WCup niveau) is groot natuurlijk.... Cloe Yvin wordt overigens 3°; Angelina Bombello (°03; VJF; 3°BK u18/-57kg): 9° (0 ovwn) --- gewoon te hoog gegrepen...

/-70kg. (Lien Meeuwssen wordt 3°)

Lien Meeuwssen (°00; Herenthout; 2°BK u21/-70kg): 3° (3 ovwn) Jammer dat Melissa moest werken...

/-78kg.

Isabelle Schrenk (°00; Herzele; 2°BK u21 en Sen/-78kg): 7° (0 ovwn)

Zoë Desmet (°02; 1°BK’16 u15/+63kg; 3°BK’17 u18/+70kg): 5° (0 ovwn)

Samengevat:

Wasquehal is voor de VJF een detectie-tornooi, meetmoment of hoe ze dat ook noemen tegenwoordig. Als u21 komt het erop neer dat ge op 5 tornooien 3 medailles moet pakken om van “het full begeleidingstraject” te kunnen genieten (met die restrictie dat een “BK u21″ en “BK seniors” maar als 1 medaille meetelt). En wat blijkt ? Welgeteld 6 Vlaamse vrouwen verschijnen daar op de mat !! De Waalse collega’s doen overigens niet veel beter met 5 (ook al is hun visvijver kleiner). Cijfers zeggen misschien niet altijd alles, maar als de VJF weer eens begint over hun succes-story, dan voel ik mij weer aangesproken natuurlijk.. :-) Bovendien van die 6 zijn er precies 2 beloftevol. We hoeven écht wel geen aparte mannen- en vrouwen- coaches hé VJF; “Franklin trekt zijne plan wel, zou ik zo durven zeggen, eigenlijk dus :-)” Naast Fiona staat met Lien Meeuwssen inderdaad nog één Vlaamse op het podium; de andere 4 boeken samen welgeteld 1 overwinning. Aan Waalse zijde overigens eenzelfde vaststelling: ze zijn nog Cadet of 1ste-jaars Junior. En dus bestaat er mijns inziens een duidelijke leemte; ah ja natuurlijk... we hebben ook nog Selina Delen (°98; /-63kg), Vicky Verschaere (°00; /-78kg) en Eveline Delbaen (°97; /-57kg); sorry, was ik vergeten....
