@meetthekawan x @evangelione Doll Project is a special collaboration between Meet The Kawan and Evangelione, designed specifically to raise funds for Bad Taste: An Illustration Exhibition. . For doll lovers who have been keeping an eye on our local art industry, most of us are familiar with the name Yeo Mei Ying. Ever since her debut more than ten years ago, her artisanal brand, Evangelione's Handmade, has garnered a loyal following consisting of local and international customers, and her dolls have captivated many hearts including ours. All of her dolls were painstakingly sewn, stitch by stitch, and they were always accompanied by a pair of mysterious yet captivating big eyes. . Next up we have Ishoku Hada Girl, created by @yuwenong . . Ishoku Hada Girl was inspired by Ishoku Hada Gyaru, which is a prominent subculture that has been trending in Harajuku, Japan since 2017. In Japanese, Ishoku Hada means unique skin, and Gyaru is a Japanese transliteration of the English slang word girl. . Ishoku Hada Gyaru took inspiration from the Ganguro style (A Japanese fashion trend that features white make-up, bleached hair and tanned skin.) and combined it with elements from monsters and alien characters from Japanese manga. This resulted in unique, colourful skin make-up, and loud, expressive fashion pieces. . Through this doll, Yuwen wishes to communicate the idea that Ishoku Hada is all about personality, self-expression and freedom. There’s no right or wrong, good or bad taste when it comes to expressing one's individuality. Quoting the creator of the Ishoku Hadu Gyaru style, Miyako Akane, “I want to help by saying loud and strong that everyone is allowed to be whom they want to be." . Introducing Gee Fan Eng @minifanfan , our artist behind White Ermine Moth Girl. . White Ermine Moth Girl is a doll conceptualised by Gee Fan Eng. Camp is an aesthetic “sensibility” that is plain to see but hard for most of us to explain, which is appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. The inspiration of White Ermine Moth Girl comes from a line in Susan Sontag’s essay, "Notes on 'Camp'" — “Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.” It reminds Gee Fan of white, furry, less likable and flying animals. . Gee Fan personally thinks moths are beautiful creatures although some people find moths disgusting and are terrified of their appearance. In this project, she tried to present the moths in Camp style, to manifest the hallmark of Camp — the spirit of extravagance. .
