Euphorbia horrida major nova
Euphorbia horrida major nova, also commonly called the African milk barrel is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family. This succulent grows as a columnar spiny succulent with sharp ridges on the stems lined with thorns. At times, one can view white and green striped markings on the stem. The growth style of this succulent is similar to that of cactus barrel cacti. A native of South Africa, the succulent flowers in summer with yellow flowers. It grows about 12 inches in height exhibiting a prolonged growth rate. It is dormant in winter and is frost-hardy. For best growth, this plant requires full sun to partial shade.

On the Genus Euphorbia
This is a guest post. Words and photos by Jeremiah Sandler.
Suspicion
I collect cacti and succulents. The more I collect plants, the more and more I become interested in taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships between them. Not just my own plants – all of them. Most recently, the genus Euphorbia has been on my mind. My favorite species are E. meloformis var. valida and E. horrida.

Euphorbia plygona var. major
This plant was long known as Euphorbia horrida var. major, but recently E. horrida (along with its varieties) has been merged into E. polygona. This seems sensible in light of how similar the two species are, and it avoids fights over whether the various varieties belong in E. horrida or in E. polygona. Euphorbia polygona is one of the species of Euphorbia which possess peduncular spines, which means that the spines are actually modified flower stalks, with the old stalks hardening and remaining in place as armature. The flowering structure in Euphorbia is called a cyathium, with a ring of 5 glands around the tiny flowers. In the photo, the glands vary from olive-green to rust-orange, while the flowers are too small to see well. Like many euphorbias, plants of this species are often mistaken for cacti because of their stout stems and spiny appearance. From the northeast edge of South Africa’s Little Karoo, on the border between Western Cape Province and Eastern Cape Province.

Euphorbia horrida with handmade earthenware on way to a client.
A glaucous cactoid Euphorbia—its white latex-like sap is absolutely toxic, the spines are sharp at the end and jagged down the shaft, and the flowers smell like rotting meat. One of my most treasured plants in collection.
