I am more and more realizing how much e-scooters are absolutely mobility aids. And you cannot change my mind on that.

Have an escooter? Please consider wearing a downhill helmet to protect your face

As someone whose relatives have escooters, and someone who has seen a lot of close calls with strangers, I wanna share a little-known bit of advice for anyone who's looking into escooters, or who already has one:

If you're on an escooter, you get the most protection by wearing a downhill or full-face helmet!

DO NOT GO HELMET-LESS!

By 'downhill' or 'full face', I mean the helmets that bmx riders use, or motorcycle riders wear, respectively. It sounds like overkill but here's the thing:

Escooters have a very high center of gravity because you're upright on them, and they have small wheels that don't absorb impact very well. It's super easy to go over your handle bars if you even hit a tiny pothole! According to this study where 212 patients presented to an emergency room, 11.8% of the patients had dental injuries

A lot of these patients presented with facial lacerations and facial fractures. Overall, 44% of patients needed surgery (5.9% needed major surgery and 38.2% needed minor surgery), and 50% needed maxillofacial follow-up

All 212 patients in this study received a head or face injury. 82% of patients didn't wear a helmet

Most of these accidents don't even involve other people or vehicles! According to this infographic, 80.2% of escooter accidents are 'falls':

So, now what?

If you don't currently have a helmet and are considering getting one, yay! Your first impulse might be to go out and buy a regular bicycle helmet, but remember: a lot of these injuries happen around your jaw and the front of your face! A bicycle helmet doesn't protect that part! When you fall on an escooter, you're likely to fall in ways that are different from a fall on a bike. So consider a downhill helmet (or a full-face, if you wanna channel your inner motorhead)!

Bei den E-Scootern lässt sich die häufig beklagte Diskrepanz zwischen politischen Sonntagsreden und der kommunalen Realität besonders gut erkennen: Zuerst wurden die elektrischen Gefährte als Klimaretter in den Städten gefeiert, weil sie Autofahrten erübrigen würden. Das stellte sich als Wunschdenken heraus, denn im Grunde sind die E-Scooter meist ein zusätzliches Freizeitvehikel oder ihre Fahrer bewegen sich in den Innenstädten parallel zu Bussen und Straßenbahnen und verbrauchen so zusätzlich Strom und Straßenraum. Viel zu viele Kommunalpolitiker sind bis heute nicht bereit, der Realität ins Auge zu schauen, sondern verharren in einer grünlackierten Scheinliberalität: Man könne doch den E-Scooter-Nutzern nicht ihr Spielzeug wegnehmen! Aber auch die zweite Runde geht an E-Scooter-Rabauken, die ihre Roller abstellen, wo sie wollen, obwohl Stadtverwaltungen behaupten, sie würden gegen die gefährlichen Stolperfallen auf Gehwegen vorgehen und geeignete ‚Parkplätze‘ definieren, die eine gewisse Ordnung ins System bringen. Neuerliche Fehlanzeige! E-Scooter waren und sind gerade für sehbehinderte Menschen eine Gefahrenquelle, da sie nicht selten kreuz und quer auf Gehwegen oder vor Hauseingängen herumstehen. Für einen Kinderwagen oder einen Rollstuhl bleibt häufig kein Platz.

Es ist längst überfällig, dass in den Kommunen der Einsatz von Leih-E-Scootern nochmals überdacht wird. Ökologie und die Sicherheit aller Menschen, gerade auch der sehbehinderten Fußgänger, müssen Priorität gegenüber den Freizeitvergnügungen einer Minderheit haben. Völlig indiskutabel ist es, dass ganze Gehwegbereiche mit E-Scootern zugestellt werden und so zusätzlich das Stadtbild verschandeln. E-Scooter sind leider Stolperfallen und keine ökologischen Helferlein gegen den Klimawandel!
