Yes, I was shocked that Mindy Kaling decided to skip the whole “will they, won’t they” thing for Eric and Bela and jump straight to “They will! They will! OMG they ARE.” But

1. They’re college kids with chemistry and no obstacles keeping them from hooking up, so why wouldn’t they? This is probably more realistic.

2. Especially for Bela, who’s not exactly an overthinker. Of course she’s going to be impulsive and just act on any urge that comes over her.

3. And while that’s probably not true for Eric, once she’s the one to start something, he’s going to go with it. She’s a cute girl! And he’s obviously into her too.

4. This is the more interesting story choice because it goes against expectations. It surprised me, but not once I thought about it. Mindy likes to take romantic tropes and turn them upside down and inside out.

5. Fighting/hooking up/accidentally catching feelings will probably be more fun to watch and have more comedic potential than a slower burn.

I don’t think Bela showed up at Eric’s door intending this at all. When you’re into someone, you walk around with that desire to share things with them. When something good (or interesting or funny) happens, they’re the one you want to tell. And she’s pretty oblivious to why she feels that pull at this point, but she does, and she’s going to act on it because she’s a big ball of id. And so when she had a small success that he was tangentially involved with (let’s be real, his advice was not groundbreaking), she just wanted to share that happiness with him. It wasn’t until Eric asked if that was all, that she realized that wasn’t all.

It was a surprisingly romantic moment, though. Very sweet, and then very passionate, and the way he looks at her just before she takes off his glasses ... it’s like he’s already in love with her? This was not a no-strings-attached hookup, regardless of what either one of them believes. They’re both such awkward idiots, it’s going to be fun watching them stumble their way toward being each other’s people, which they obviously are.

seemingly i’m on my own in this thought but i really enjoyed both this season and this season finale.

I’m actually quite interested in Bela’s arc and where it’s going to go in the future. To me it like makes complete sense that someone who is clearly very talented suddenly comes into too much power and responsibility and doesn’t know how to deal with it and deal with other people. Bela is lame and has not been good at interacting with people and it’s catching up with her. I’m looking forward to seeing her repent in s3 and the future of the show. We’ve also not seen the end of Eric or Eric and Bela as a couple, he’s BJ Novak. although i’d love to see a different love interest for Bela.

I’ve hated every guy that Whitney has been with apart from Canaan. I’m so excited to see the love triangle of Canaan, Whitney and Kimberly. I’m happy to see Whitney explore her own intelligence, i think it’ll be interesting to see her try and balance very difficult class that takes a lot of time and football when football season starts again. (side not there have been like 4 small jokes about a queer whitney in the show so im hoping queer whitney future but yk)

I would love to see more of Kimberly’s union work, that i felt really spoke true to her character. Jackson grew on me over time. I’m looking forward to seeing jackson try and win kimberly back. Personally i still see more chemistry between canaan and whitney then canaan and kimberly. As well as the fact that they work together and neither of them can afford to not be working together.

This really was Leighton’s season for me. The slut era was hilarious and very realistic for her character. Leighton and Tatum to me was clearly not going to last and she was great for what she provided narratively for the show. Tantum really represented what leighton wanted to be as a queer person and who she was before she got involved with the women’s center. I really love Alicia so I’m happy about her return as well.

A Different Kind of Burn

Did I expect Bela and Eric to have more burn and less bang? Yes.

But in the new age where no one really stays in sexual angst anymore and just bangs, I think we are all introduced to the next generation of slow burn - the we're fucking casually but I'm here in your apartment for the third night in a row because I love spending time with you

We're totally casual but I haven't hooked up with anyone but you kind of slow burn

And I think I like this dynamic more because the one thing I hated about slow burns in the past is that once they get together they lose that cute banter-y edge that made them appealing to begin with and they turn into this mushy gooey couple and it always sat wrongly with me because that means you're only nice to people you want to fuck.

Whereas Bela and Eric's new dynamic is refreshing in the sense that they're already having sex and they still have the same banter they had - including being on dating apps after having casual sex

They're the new slow burn in the sense that ironically enough - their journey is not all about sex- that one has been done and dusted. Their journey is about how when Bela need's advise, she runs to Eric first.

It's how Eric's door is always open for her despite saying otherwise

It's the cute we're so casual we became a couple without even knowing it

It's the slowly falling in love with the person who is my person

And it's a story we've been told before but this is a new take on the trope that is honestly, really freaking exciting because I'm not all about small touches and almost kisses - now I'm all about being in your house three days in a row because even though I say I hate you, I actually really don't. And we tease each other this way but truly I have your back

And I'm rambling but I think that that is so beautiful

I was hoping that ericbela would be a slowburn but I also see the fwb to lovers vision. The miscommunication, the angst, the denial, one person seeing someone else since they aren’t *officially* together and the other watching from afar.

They better drag out them getting together. I wouldn’t mind watching a few more seasons before they admit they have feelings for each other.

I am actually sad about what they did with Bela and Eric's relationship.

Eric seemed like he cared about Bela and was really affected by what she did, he even called his parents for emotional support. When he said "When someone like me likes you, I'm not enough" that shit hurt. But we didn't see Bela feeling really bad about it. Sure she felt shitty but it seemed like she didn't understand the gravity of the situation or the pain she caused.

We can see that Bela is not sure of herself at ALL and is really insecure. She thinks her value or worth lies in her sexuality, her popularity, and her success. She focuses so much on the value others put on her that she doesn't see her actual value like Eric did. This is why I think is really sad, he really liked her for what she was and she was comfortable being herself with him. As long as she doesn't understand and learns to be authentic and true to herself is unlikely we'll see growth in her character. Also, we didn't get any talk about the power abuse of the comedian, and the fact that Bela uses her sexuality to advance in her career. I thought if they talked about this, it would at least be worth what they did to those characters but no. When he told all his staff that he slept with a college freshman, that was disgusting.
