So, did anyone else catch this? While Ardyn is doing his thang with our Lord Ifernian, we get this little flash. Now, it could be just Ifrit... succumbing, but I suspect it’s really more than that.  And I’ve suspected it for a long time now, but this gave me some concrete proof.
After bequeathing humans the gift of fire, Ifrit realized humans weren’t using his gifts the way he’d intended. The way the story goes, Ifrit intended on wiping humanity off the face of Eos, but the rest of the Astrals had already gotten attached. They couldn’t let Ifrit kill them all off, thus kicking of the War of the Astrals.
We all know how that turned out.
Ifrit lost, was cast into Ravatough to save humanity, and he’s been in there ever since. But, in his last action, he cursed humanity.
With his dying breath, he swore that any misusing his gifts would be marked, and as long as humanity spread their darkness like a plague, so too would they be thus inflicted
So...
Is the Starscourge just a “parasite”, as Verstael Besithia describes it in his dossiers?
Or is it a sickness of the soul? Because all the Daemons (as we have known for some time) are all humans. And the event that causes the contraction of Starscourge is usually something traumatic. Melusine, for example, luring those to their doom for the loss of her partner to someone else- was it jealousy? And did she kill that other hunter for it? The naga in Fouciagh Hollow, for another example- if you read all the lore correctly, you know is the woman who lost her baby to a band of marauding daemons.
Now- how does a mother lose her baby, the most precious thing in her life, to monsters? If they were together, why did they take the baby and not the mother? How did the baby get separated from it’s mother? Doesn’t something about that smell off? Doesn’t that hint of negligence? We never hear about the baby having become a Daemon, but the mother...
Well, we all know she’s in Fociaugh Hollow.
Have all the people who contracted Starscourge committed some evil?
And if Ardyn was their healer, and did know why they contracted the Starscourge, would that have not added an extra element of bitterness? He absorbs their sins into himself, literally. He’s made himself sick with all their vile deeds- he’s sacrificing his health and humanity to save those who’ve committed horrible acts. The people don’t just want Arydn because he can heal them of a horrible, highly communicable disease.
They want him because he absolves them of their sins.

I realized
while crying after finishing Ardyn’s DLC for the second time
How tired
She sounds while singing about halfway through. While he’s walking by himself.
In the unending Darkness.
And I realize how exhausted she must be to witness how much suffering he’s caused not just for others.
But himself.
And it made me cry harder.
