Sherri Papini, the California woman who pleaded guilty to faking her own kidnapping and lying about it to the FBI, was sentenced Monday to 18 months in prison.
Prosecutors recommended last week that Papini be sentenced to eight months.
“A lesser sentence, such as the one month of imprisonment recommended by probation or home detention in lieu of incarceration, is not sufficient to achieve the purposes of sentencing,” prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum filed Sept. 12 in U.S. District Court for Eastern California. They also recommended three years of supervised release after she serves her time in prison.
U.S. District Judge William Shubb agreed, giving Papini prison time along with 36 months of supervised release. She was ordered to surrender by Nov. 8 and to pay $309,902 in restitution for losses incurred by the California Victim Compensation Board, the Social Security Administration, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.
Following sentencing, Papini's attorney William Portanova said the sentence was "fair."
He said before sentencing that his client was a changed person: "Whatever happened five years ago, that's a different Sherri Papini than the person you see here today."
Papini left the courthouse Monday without commenting.
Papini pleaded guilty in April to two counts of a 35-count indictment, admitting to mail fraud and lying to a law enforcement officer.
The charges didn’t stem from her faking her abduction but rather from the lies she continued to tell for years afterward.

Papini, a mother of two from Redding, was arrested more than five years after she was reported missing in November 2016. She reappeared three weeks later, on Thanksgiving, about 145 miles south of where she had vanished, with injuries that authorities now believe were self-inflicted and a brand on her shoulder, which she blamed on her abductors.
Papini told police that two Hispanic women had abducted her. But investigators found male DNA on Papini’s clothing — DNA that led them to her ex-boyfriend, whom she had been staying with the entire time she pretended to be missing.

Papini had fled to the former boyfriend in Southern California, nearly 600 miles south of her home. He dropped her off along Interstate 5 about 150 miles from her home after she said she wanted to go home.
The former boyfriend told investigators that Papini had asked him to hit her — he wouldn’t, but he agreed to hold a hockey stick for her to run into and to pelt her with hockey pucks. He also branded her when she asked him to.
“State and federal investigators devoted limited resources to Papini’s case for nearly four years before they independently learned truth: that she was not kidnapped or tortured,” prosecutors said in the sentencing documents.
The government said an eight-month sentence would discourage Papini from ever trying such a scheme again and dissuade others from committing fraud.
The sentence is also appropriate, prosecutors said, because Papini’s crimes had “many societal harms such as causing the public to live in fear and possibly causing law enforcement to doubt the veracity of future victims’ claims.”
“An entire community believed the hoax and lived in fear that Hispanic women were roving the streets to abduct and sell women,” prosecutors said.
“She maintained her hoax and received Social Security and California Victims’ benefits for years, demonstrating that she had no remorse for her actions even after the FBI presented her with evidence of her fraud,” the documents said.

Quote
Jenkins, a supporter of masks in schools, proceeded to detail a series of alleged incidents. "I don't reject people coming here and speaking their voice," Jenkins, a supporter of masks in schools, said. "... I reject them following my car around. I reject them saying that they're coming for me, that I need to beg for mercy. "I reject that when they are using their First Amendment rights on public property, they're also going behind my home and brandishing their weapons to my neighbors."
Jennifer Jenkins quoted in an report by Elisha Fieldstadt at NBC News. Florida school board member who supports masks says people told her to 'beg for mercy'
When I was a teen my mother taught first grade at a school in Charlotte< NC that had a wonderful principal.  Once my mother, me, my younger brother and the principal went  on a short vacation to the beach.  It was probably the late summer of 1970. Anyhow Charlotte schools were in the middle of an extrodinarliy contentious school desegregation decision.
We dropped the principal off at her home. I never visited the house, but it was older and not very visable from the road. There was a mailbox by the driveway. And I remember a very large plum tree in the yard. I remember my mother mentioned that she could not use the mailbox to get her mail.
I thought of that principal when I heard Jenkins speak and searched for her obituary online. I cried.
The principal went to a different school, the school that had once been the poorest in the city and became the school everyone wanted their children to go to. When she retired she was given the key to the city . She lived to be almost 100 and it is plain she was beloved my many, many.
What if there were a bomb that day when she opened the mailbox!
November elections are comming up. I find it so difficult to figure out about the people running for school boards, but they are important elections. .

Isaiah Brown, Black man shot by Virginia deputy who gave him ride home, in critical condition.
Myka Pinckney
Isaiah Brown, 32, survived being shot 10 times, is now in critical condition and fighting for his life. The incident occurred last Saturday when Brown got home and dialed 911. Brown said his brother was not letting him into his mother’s room to retrieve his car keys. When officers arrived they asked if he had a gun, Brown replied “nope”. Brown was still on the phone with dispatchers when the officer mistook browns’ cellphone for a gun, and fired shots. He was said to be shot at least 10 times, with 8 bullets still remaining in his body. The officer had seen Brown earlier, offering him a ride, because his car broke down several miles away. Brown is on a breathing machine and remains in very critical conditions. Brown's mother ,Jenifer Brown, only concerned that “(her) son to hopefully come home alive.”
This is another case of an unarmed, African American male being shot by the police. It's even sadder because he called the police to help. This is why black people really don’t call the police and figure it out themselves. They make situations even worse. The police are supposed to be looked at as superheroes, but the bad cops are shadowing the good. You can’t trust the justice system, not just for being black, but being a minority in America. The police use the power of their gun too much when they have tasers to use. An officer's job is majority communication, but it seems like they’re just becoming the executioner. The killing of African American at the hands of police is  a huge flaw within systematic racism that needs to stop. Killing is inhumane but America finds a way to make it right? And we were supposed to be a country that was united, but yet separated because of our differences.
Question: Do you believe police training/ protocols be adjusted to deal with black people, since police are so fearful? Expakin

The shooter, Snochia Moseley, a 26-year-old temporary employee at the Rite Aid distribution center turned the handgun on herself.
by Pete Williams, Daniel Arkin and Elisha Fieldstadt / Sep.20.2018 / 2:19 PM GMT / Updated 7:59 PM GMT
Three people were shot dead and another three were injured after an employee opened fire at a Rite Aid distribution center in Maryland on Thursday morning, law enforcement officials said.
The incident in Aberdeen, about 30 miles from Baltimore, ended when the shooter, Snochia Moseley, 26, shot herself in the head. She later died at the hospital.
Moseley, of Baltimore, was a temporary employee, who reported to work as usual around 8 a.m. and started shooting about an hour later. She began outside the Rite Aid facility then moved into the building, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler said.
Two of the victims died at the scene, and one died at the hospital, according to police. The three additional victims who were wounded were hospitalized but were expected to survive.
Gahler said investigators are still working to determine a motive. He said he didn't know how well the victims and shooter knew each other, but they likely had some previous interaction because "it was not her first day."
The FBI office in Baltimore and special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were also assisting with the investigation.
The shooter was armed with a 9mm Glock, which was registered in her name, and "several magazines," Gahler said.
A statement from Rite Aid said the company was working with authorities and would make grief counselors available to staff.
Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted early Wednesday that he was "closely monitoring" the situation, adding: "Our prayers are with all those impacted, including our first responders. The State stands ready to offer any support."
President Trump was briefed on the shooting, "and we were monitoring," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told NBC News Thursday afternoon.
"Three workplace active shooting attacks in just the last 24 hours should spark outrage in every American," former congressman Gabriel Giffords said in a tweet.
The incident comes one day after a heavily armed employee opened firein the offices of a software company in Middleton, Wisconsin, injuring four people. Also Wednesday, a man opened fire in a municipal building in Pennsylvania and shot four people, including a police officer, before another officer shot and killed him.
"No matter where you work, learn, play, or live — you have a right to feel safe, and I’m horrified that that’s no longer the reality in America," Giffords added.

Elisha Fieldstadt for NBC News on a story that I'm going to make light of after the block quote, so while we're still being serious up here I just want to make it clear that we at Nullary Sources absolutely do not condone filtering like this, as it invariably leads to the blocking of resources on sexuality/etc. from people who may not be able to access that material at home for financial or safety reasons:
Starbucks will start blocking pornography viewing on its stores' Wi-Fi starting in 2019, the company announced amid renewed public pressure on the coffee giant by an internet-safety group.
A Starbucks representative told NBC News that the viewing of "egregious content" over its stores' Wi-Fi has always violated its policy, but the company now has a way to stop it.
My initial joke on this was going to be faux outrage about my Constitutional rights being flagrantly violated by not being able to look at porn in a Starbucks any more, but that train of thought quickly derailed into thinking about which Founding Fathers would have looked at porn in a Starbucks
Benjamin Franklin is a dead certainty

Brittney Griner’s jail sentence increased
On March 5, WNBA star, Britneyy Griner was arrested at the Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, Russia. She was arrested because while her bags were being checked, Russian officials found vape cartridges in her bag that contained cannabis oil. Because of this, Griner was sentenced to two months in Russian jail. On Wednesday, March 16, Griner pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges. Since she pleaded not guilty, her sentence was increased by two more months. Griner also asked to complete her sentence on house arrest. However, the Russian officials denied this request. Griner’s attorneys have said that she is doing ok in jail. Griner said that her only problem was that the bed was too small for her. She is expected to be released on May 19. Celebrities across the country have supported Griner. Many of them have been tweeting “#FreeGriner.” In a tweet, American politician Cori Bush stated, “We cannot ignore the fact that if Brittney Griner wasn’t a Black woman, it would be plastered across the news that she is held as a political prisoner in Russia.”
I chose this article because I believe that the nation should know that one of our Americans is being held in Russia. As I was researching, I didn't really see any other professional athletes talking about Brittney Griner. I think that as professional athletes, they should all have each other's back.
Why did Brittney Griner go to Russia knowing that the U.S is not on even terms with Russia?

80-pound cougar removed from New York City home
Aug. 31, 2021 By Elisha Fieldstadt
The cat, an 11-month-old female named Sasha, had a brief vet visit at the Bronx Zoo and will be taken to a wildlife refuge in Arkansas.
An 11-month-old, approximately 80-pound, female cougar was removed from a New York City home on Thursday.
An 80-pound cougar that was removed from a New York City home last week is headed to an animal sanctuary after a short stay at the Bronx Zoo.
“Wildlife like cougars are not pets,” Basil Seggos, the commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, said in a statement Monday. “While cougars may look cute and cuddly when young, these animals can grow up to be unpredictable and dangerous."
The cougar, an 11-month-old female named Sasha, was removed from the home Thursday night with help from the New York City Police Department, according to the statement from the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Sasha was then taken to the Bronx Zoo where she was checked out by veterinarians before heading to Turpentine Creek, an animal sanctuary in Arkansas where she will receive lifelong care.
Animal welfare officials said the big cat was surrendered by her owner.
"I’ve never seen a cougar in the wild, but I’ve seen them on leashes, smashed into cages, and crying for their mothers when breeders rip them away. I’ve also seen the heartbreak of owners, like in this case, after being sold not just a wild animal, but a false dream that they could make a good ‘pet,’" said Kelly Donithan, the director of animal disaster response for the Humane Society of the United States, who was on the scene.
"This cougar is relatively lucky that her owners recognized a wild cat is not fit to live in an apartment or any domestic environment. The owner’s tears and nervous chirps from the cougar as we drove her away painfully drives home the many victims of this horrendous trade and myth that wild animals belong anywhere but the wild," Donithan said.
The NYSDEC and NYPD worked to coordinate the safe removal of the big cat from the home and transport her to the Bronx Zoo where she was cared for by veterinarians and animal care staff over the weekend until her transport to an Arkansas animal sanctuary.Julie Larsen Maher / Bronx Zoo
It's unclear what neighborhood or what kind of housing situation the cougar was living in. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation does not comment on active investigations, and Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said the case is under investigation and no further information would be released.
Shea thanked officers from the emergency service unit and the Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad, who assisted police.
Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund, urged Congress to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which would "strengthen existing laws to prohibit the breeding and possession of big cat species such as lions, tigers, cheetahs and jaguars," the Wildlife Conservation Society statement said.
New York's regulations on ownership of wild animals was made more stringent last year.

Puma owner ‘grieving’ over animal’s surrender from Bronx home
By Steven Vago and Tina Moore August 31, 2021
The owner of an 80-pound cougar rescued from a Bronx home opened up about the strange ordeal on Tuesday — telling The Post she is “grieving” over the wild animal’s surrender, but acknowledged the big cat is now in a better place.
The sentiments shared by Miranda Rodriguez over the loss of Sasha, an 11-month-old puma, came as the animal was en route from The Big Apple to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Rodriguez said she co-owned Sasha and referred to the cougar as her only “pet.”
“She was a pet to me at the end of the day, so I’m still grieving about the whole situation,” Rodriguez said when reached by phone on Monday.
“I would like everyone to respect that at the end of the day it was still a pet for us and it was hard for us to do that,” she said in reference to handing over Sasha.
Miranda Rodriguez, Sasha’s owner, said she is “grieving” over the animal’s surrender.
“I just want to grieve with my family and she’s in a better place — that’s all we can ask for at the moment.”
Sasha was picked up by authorities from a Throggs Neck home last Thursday and spent time at The Bronx Zoo before the trek to her new out-of-state home.
Tanya Smith, the president of Turpentine Creek, said Sasha will receive care for the rest of her life at the sprawling, 450-acre sanctuary.
Neighbors from the home where Sasha was rescued do not believe the animal was housed there, but instead was dropped off there before the pickup.
“I don’t think that animal was here. It was probably surrendered here,” Hammond Ells, 41, said.
Sasha, the 11-month-old puma, is heading to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.WCS
Ells said he’s seen two dogs and a parrot at the residence — but never a cougar.
“I’m already afraid of dogs as is … if I walked outside and saw that, I would have lost my mind,” he said.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea on Monday said the department’s Emergency Service Unit and Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad assisted with the rescue.
“The case is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time,” he said.

Will the Olympics Catch Up to Modern Life?
By Hannah Marie Marose, Florida State University Class of 2021
July 6, 2021
Tumblr media
We all know that performance enhancing drugs of any kind have long been banned from the Olympics and basically every other sporting competition. However, the case of Sha’Carri Richardson has opened a lot of people’s eyes to questioning recreational drugs and if they should be banned as well. Cannabis use in the rules of the Olympics has been changed from being banned year long to simply being banned on competition days. However, people still have wondered why marijuana use is still not allowed on the day of the competition. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, drugs are banned if they meet criteria such as posing a health risk, contributing to performance enhancement, or violating the sport’s spirit (Mather). Athletes such as swimmer Michael Phelps and snowboarder Ross Rebagliati have also faced similar situations to Richardson by being found with photos of them using marijuana or having trace amounts of the drug in their bloodstream.
Sha’Carri Richardson is a new face for the Olympics as a 21 year old woman fresh out of Louisiana State University. She had impressed millions with her speed and won the 100 meter last month, which qualified her for the Tokyo games (Fieldstadt). Richardson has had an extremely bright future ahead of her in the professional sports arena, minus this one setback. Richardson had learned about the death of her biological mother, which had always been a strain in her life. She even learned this information from a reporter, which she said had triggered an extreme emotional response from her. To cope with this pain, she had used marijuana. She has been deemed ineligible to compete for the next month, which has crushed her opportunity for the Tokyo Games. Most people who commit this offense are sentenced to three months of ineligibility. However, Richardson accepted her offense and completed a course about marijuana use. She has since apologized to her fans, sponsors, and competitors. She has also issued many tweets, one of which stated “I am human”, in the hope many will empathize with her struggles she had been facing.
Why are people so confused about this upsetting suspension for Richardson? Marijuana has slowly become decriminalized and legal for recreation in a large number of states in America. New York has been one of the most recent states to declare marijuana use recreationally legal. It has been added to a large list of states such as Colorado (the first state to do so), Arizona, Montana, and New Jersey who have done so already (Recreational Marijuana). This makes Sha’Carri Richardson’s suspension a little hard for people to understand, being that the state that she did use marijuana in having declared marijuana use for recreation to be legal. It may be a long time before we see some change in the Olympics stance on the use of marijuana. Although strides have been made in this country, it could be a long time for the Olympics to see the drug as non-performance enhancing and not taking away the “spirit of the sport”.

Coronavirus Fails to Stop School Shootings
By Xin Yi Chan, Binghamton University Class of 2023
March 18, 2021
Tumblr media
Using the data collected between 2015 and 2018, the United States averaged a school shooting every 77 days. Since 2000, an average of five students or staff a year have died in active shooter incidents in a school. Over 57% of surveyed US teens reported that they were worried a shooting could happen at their school. According to a student, “I hope [lawmakers] realize how much trauma high school Americans and middle school kids go through, not necessarily every single day, but more often than every other nation worldwide.” While the numbers have died down ever since the coronavirus lockdown, school shootings are still existent across the country.
On March 1, a targeted shooting occurred at approximately 9:59 CST at Watson Chapel Junior High in Arkansas. This incident happened during passing when students move from one classroom to another. There were multiple students in the hallway when the shooting happened. According to Chief Kelvin Sergeant, “So how many students were actually in the hallway we do not know at this time, but there were other individuals present, as they were transferring from one class to another.” A 15-year-old boy was shot multiple times, placing him in an “extremely critical” condition. He was the only one harmed during the shooting. After injuring his classmate, the suspect, also a 15-year-old boy, was found hiding behind a house near the school. He was tracked down by dogs. Although he was still armed, he surrendered without further intervention. The suspect was then taken to a juvenile detention center. However, due to the severity of his crime, there is a chance that charges will file in adult court. Prosecutors have not yet decided on this. Since the suspect is 15 years old, his name wasn’t released to the press.
Over 2 weeks later, another school shooting suspect emerged. This time, in Ohio. On Saturday, March 13, an anonymous tip was received by the North Canton Police Department. Someone had commented on a social media post, threatening to “shoot up” Hoover High School. With assistance from the FBI, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office managed to locate and take the suspect into custody. There were no firearms found at the residence. The principal, Eric Bornstine, stated that he will continue monitoring and investigating any reports received.
Despite coronavirus still at large and affecting our everyday lives, school shootings are still occurring in the United States. What has our education system done about it? Well, in New York, the state mandates at least four annual lockdown drills. During the lockdowns, students are told to stay crouched and away from the windows. They aren’t allowed to make noises and are expected to treat the drill as if it wasn’t a drill. While this may seem a bit excessive, students agree that the drills help keep them safe. According to Thomas Ristoff, director of the Syracuse City School District’s department of public safety, “the lockdown drill provides us with an opportunity to train our staff and students, to build their personal confidence in their ability to respond to an actual crisis. Our main objective is to build that ‘muscle memory’ with our students and staff so that they can respond by rote in a stressful situation, in part due to the repetitive training and drills.”

” Today was a really tough day,” Joe Fasula composed on the Facebook page of the Gerrity’s supermarket chain, which he co-owns.
” A woman, who the authorities understand to be a chronic issue in the neighborhood,” walked into the chain’s Hanover Area store and “continued to deliberately cough on our fresh produce, and a small section of our pastry shop, meat case and grocery,” Fasula said. Authorities are working to get the female tested for coronavirus, he said.

” While there is little doubt this woman was doing it as a very twisted trick … we had no option but to throw out all item she was available in contact with,” he said. “Working carefully with the Hanover Town health inspector, we recognized every area that she was in, we got rid of the item and thoroughly cleaned up and decontaminated everything.”
Fasula composed that grocery store personnel estimated the worth of the food to be “well over $35,000”
” I am likewise definitely ill to my stomach about the loss of food,” Fasula composed. “While it is always a shame when food is wasted, in these times when many individuals are worried about the security of our food supply, it is a lot more troubling.”
In a statement recently in which Fasula announced workers at his 9 stores would receive an additional $1 an hour, he shared that some departments, including the meat and dairy sections, were lacking food as individuals hurried to stockpile in the midst of the pandemic.
Fasula stated his personnel “did the very best they might to get the woman out of the store as quick as possible” and get authorities on the scene. He added that the local district attorney’s office stated it will pursue charges against the woman.
The Hanover Area Police Department confirmed in a declaration that it is investigating the occurrence which charges would be filed against the suspect, who underwent a mental health evaluation.
” The only silver lining to this travesty is that it offered us the regrettable chance to evaluate our procedures and demonstrate how seriously we take your security,” Fasula concluded. “One thing is for sure, we will have the cleanest display screen and best produce throughout northeast PA.”
