Somehow, Leo's depth continued to be visible right in the beginning of the second set, more or less capitalizing on Elias' errors (including a double fault and a forehand gone too wide). Leo then came up with a forehand winner to convert his break point 2-0 after a previous service game hold. Subsequently, he consolidated that point to 3-0.
However, Elias was still able to hold his service games to avoid further demolition. One of which came from a rally where he went left and right and finished that point with a working volley several points before he held his service game 2-4. On the other hand, Leo's service games were inevitable toward the end of the match, resulting in several unreturned serves and sealing the match with an ace (6-3), earning him his first ATP-level victory after ages of receiving wild cards to no avail. Elias initially broke and took control of the first set thanks to his forehand passing shot while taking care of Paire's second serve problems, but Paire predominantly worked it out through his backhand toward the end of the match, where he doubled the reverse card when he made Elias stay back. By then, the flow went in Paire's racquet, which explained the erratic start to the third set (and Elias' 30% break point conversion rate), but Paire had 3 more opportunities to break thanks to his accurate approach to the lines, thus he still won the match as a result.
Interestingly, Paire's noticeable second serve trouble came along the way since he double-faulted twice more than Elias (7 to 5), fading his second serve winning percentage by 8% with only a 42% winning rate. However, he quickly addressed those by optimizing his first serves and the aforementioned return games in the crucial points, scoring twice more aces than Elias and stood out with a 76% winning percentage, 12% more than Elias' 53%, whose service game faded away when he had to deal with Paire's baseline game.
In the semifinals, Paire will face the winner between Maxime Janvier and second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, which is ongoing as this match is written. This could possibly be a classic, vintage match that might only deliver if one could solve their pacing or return issue in general to complement their point construction, but there could also be other possibilities on the floor as this match progressed. Could be a tough one, but Paire's comeback is on the right direction insofar!
