haven’t watched netflix atla yet! what do you think the show got right (… if they did at all) and what it got wrong?
What the show got right: I think Aang was perfectly cast!! That child is so happy, cute, and lively that it's amazing. He somehow manages to keep you engaged just with the power of his adorable smile. Zuko's actor has tragic makeup, but his passion makes up for it, he manages to pull off the script very well in my opinion and he sometimes slips into a modern highschooler mannerism set but we can overlook that. There's also this one great joke where Aang and Zuko are fighting in a town market and a random woman throws herself at Zuko screaming "HOW DARE YOU HIT THAT CHILD!!!"
What the show got wrong: The idea that a live action ATLA should exist. It is like a bunch of people sat down in a room and asked themselves: "What if ATLA wasn't as good?" It is completely confused who its target audience is (somehow they dumbed down the cartoon, but also included content that is really really not child appropriate, and you all know I am a big "kids can take a lot" believer), it doesn't understand the characters or why things happened the way they happened, it adds a bunch of dumb unnecessary scenes, the music is bland, the visuals ugly. The wigs and outfits are genuinely tragic, Yue is such a victim of this show's makeup department it isn't even funny. I genuinely recommend not watching this show and just rewatching the cartoon instead, you'll gain nothing from 8 hours of this

who was ur favorite ATLA character?
Katara! Love how she is strong, caring, and gentle, while also having a bad temper and screaming her head off every now and then. She has a "women can do men's work" plotline, but it doesn't diminish women's work bc she is good at that as well. A+ female lead fr

legit my favorite part of atla is anytime toph and katara fight and then make up like
Fr. Love it how they get a little too into beating each other up during training. Love it how the boys have to get between them and then they still get kicked out of the way so the girls can yell at each other better. And then in the end they hug and make up and tell each other how wonderful they are. Feminism <3<3

one thing i really love about ATLA was how Katara never forgives her mother's killer but rather just gets closure it's not even treated as a bad thing to arrive at the conclusion she did
One of the most iconic eps of the show! I also liked how she used bloodbending and wasn't judged for it or treated like she had to learn a lesson about not using it...

Katara in the Live Action: I still don't know what firebenders are doing in Earth Kingdom city. /// Idk either Katara they're not even supposed to be here yet until season 2
My fav part was how everyone was like "This city is DANGEROUS... there are SPIES EVERYWHERE... you NEVER KNOW who might be listening... this isn't some little island or village this is a BIG CITY and has a SPY NETWORK... Here's a whole mystery plotline where everyone new we meet might be a Fire Nation spy because you can't trust ANYONE..." and then the spies like. Wear bright red Fire Nation robes.

There can be some funny moments in Natla’s writing but those are scarce and one funny quip does not a good show make
Removing the original’s plot and storyline entirely, the show’s pacing is weird. Starting with the air genocide was cool, but it doesn’t pair well with the sudden timeskip to an era where nobody knows what an Airbender is. It makes the fire nation look threatening as a whole, but Ozai by himself is not threatening at all, even though he’s supposed to be.
Showing rebels in the capital fire nation city is also really cool for showing us the entire world but again, it takes away the mystery of the fire nation that Aang would be fighting against and demystifies the distant threat that is Ozai. His first introduction and he is hiding behind his teenaged daughter (while accurate to his character, I don’t know if the writers intended for this) and then Azula becoming a sheltered psychopath in her second appearance with her little rich castle friends is such a weird way to introduce an antagonist and a foil to Zuko, Katara and Aang
And then back to the Gaang, them traveling these vast distances so quickly makes the world seem a lot smaller than it actually is! Especially with the cramming of so many characters into the Kyoshi and Omashu episodes! I know the writers want to fit twenty 20-minute episodes into eight 40-minute episodes, but it takes away from the fire nation scenes and the build up to that threat. If everyone important is sitting right here in the Earth Kingdom, why doesn’t Ozai show up himself to take care of things?
And then Zuko’s Agni Kai with Ozai. So far I’d been okay with Zuko’s writing in this series but I had to pause the Agni Kai because I just. Couldn’t. Even trying to remove the original series’ writing, I still didn’t understand why Zuko went through with it? It was even harder to wrap my head around because the natla version didn’t have the Zuko vs Zhao Agni Kai, which was VITAL to understanding Zuko and his relationship with fighting and Iroh
And yeah there are way too many scenes of people burning to death. At some point, it makes firebending look cheap and not like a very dangerous skill that takes years of discipline to master.
I have more thoughts but this is getting too long and I hate bothering people. Everyone go rewatch the original and remember what they took from us (I’ll never forget you, Unagi sea serpent)
No prob anon, let it all out!!

I'm saying it right now: the live action could NEVER be able to embody the iconic scene of Katara stopping the rain in season 3
She wouldn't even get there!!! She would be mildly uncomfortable with Zuko instead of a straight up bitch so he'd never try to make it right. This Katara would not even threaten to murder him at the slightest provocation because that is wrong we can't have our heroes doing wrong things :((

i know you havent talked about ATLA in a second but like the scene where Aang goes into the Avatar State because the sand benders muzzled Appa ALWAYS fucks me up, like a thousand lifetimes of avatars all shedding tears and sharing Aang's pain of losing his companion. the music, katara hugging him? it's all so good
IT'S OK the rewatch got paused right before the finale bc life but I am def returning to it soon and absolutely wanna talk abt it. You're right, that scene goes SO HARD. Seeing Aang angry and destructive is always fun, but that specific instance where he is mourning Appa and punishing his kidnapper.... aaaaaaaaa my baby boy poor little guy :(

Just finished watching the fourth episode of the atla live action and why do they struggle so much with characterization when the source material did it so well? For a moment there Sokka and Katara switched personalities, and wtf did they do to Bumi?? And that's just this episode... Aang feels off at times too, much of his character arc is about him learning to confront his guilt and the war instead of avoiding them, so him being so focused on being the avatar doesn't feel like him at all. Then there's Suki, Gran Gran, Teo, I don't even know what they tried to do with Zhao... and Zuko hasn't talked about his honor once (I'm kinda joking with this one but also no, I'm not joking)
(Gordon Cormier and Dallas Liu are doing an amazing job though, that scene with them fighting in Omashu was great and I don't know why but I loved the little addition of Zuko having a journal)
YEAH they really reduced all characters to some basic stereotypes, but Bumi was flat out massacred into a whiny 100 year old manchild that Aang needs to placate. Wtf. Honor..... y e ah. They. I guess they forgot.
You're sooo right! I liked the little journal, it showed that Zuko is truly dedicated to this entire thing. It also helped with narration!

lying about having a crush on a widely crushed on guy is actually so real. o7 soldier
o7 He was the safe bet!!! I was often teased for not having crushes AND I saw liking fictional boys as dangerous bc it was the early 2010s, but everyone had a crush on Zuko so I wouldn't be mocked by either side!!! Truly the perfect middle ground for my scheme

TEO AND SAI AND JET IN OMASHU!! NO AGNI KAI BETWEEN ZUKO AND ZHAO!! KATARA'S GRAPHIC FLASHBACKS EVERYTIME SHE SPEAKS
The first Omashu episode was so riddled with so many subplots from all across the season I kept forgetting what was happening. Zuko not having a Zhao battle, but then SWINGING AT HIS FATHER AND FULLY GOING ALONG WITH THE AGNI KAI THAT GOT HIM BANISHED was insane character assassination. Katara's personality was replaced with flashbacks. Show of the century

for some reason i thought the tag "natla" stood for "not avatar the last airbender" and not "netflix" and i did not question it for days
My first instinct whenever I see it is to read it the same way I do "Notagami". As in, a bad live action ripoff of a beloved series. It's great

were u an atla fan when it was first releasing episodes or after all the episodes were released?
I do remember watching some of book 3 with a "NEW EPISODES!!!" sign, but I haven't seen it all back then bc 1) I wasn't allowed to watch much TV and 2) I only had German Nickelodeon which meant I only understood half of everything. I first saw it beginning to end when I was 13, and it became one of my first fandoms!

ive been watching an ep a day for the live action atla series cuz im not strong enough to watch it all in one sitting. so i'm on episode 4 and wow. just when i thought the character assassination could not get any worse they have Bumi joke about the genocide of Aang's people. wow. wow. wow. this show sucks.
Oh god I think Bumi is the most offensive character assassination of the show. The genocide joke. The guilt tripping. His role being "senile corrupt old man Aang has to convince he isn't a coward" instead of "king of pranks teaching Aang that he will be okay and to keep an open mind". Idk why the writers decided to bully Aang but that was especially hard to watch
