Why the Herondales are famous
I recently saw a post about why Will got so famous when everyone else from TID who also fought the infernal devices didn't, and I came up with an explanation:
Jace says it himself in LoS, the Shadowhunter world revolves around families. Even before Will, the Herondales were already famous (which we know from The Lost Herondale). The Carstairs had some recognition, mostly because of Cortana, but I suspect Jem's name got replaced by Brother Zacariah in any official records. I don't think the Branwells were that known, not to mention Henry was already shunned due to his inventions, and Charlotte did get the Consul position, that's pretty famous in their world, especially when you consider they were praising her specifically but not her family (once again, I don't think the Fairchilds were that recognized), unlike the Herondales as a whole. The Lightwoods also get recognition, and are also a pretty well known family, so they don't really need an explanation, I don't think...
Now, about Tessa, the hard truth is that Shadowhunters are, as a whole, jerks. It wouldn't matter to them that she helped save the world, they would ignore her because she's a warlock. Not only that, but she does become a Herondale, thus contributing to the greatness associated to their family name.
I believe the reason that whenever Herondales are praised in the books, the narration says "like William or his son James, or of course Jace" is because those are the ones we, as an audience, know, but, within the Shadowhunter world, there are probably other famous Herondales that contribute to their fame (Imogen, for one, was Inquisitor). Not to mention, they're not just famous for their greatness, but also for their infamy. Herondales are basically known as a "bipolar" family - for every great one, there's a terrible one: Tobias, Edmund, Stephen, they're all also famous, but for bad reasons.
There are also other families, like Cartwright, Penhallow, Trueblood, Wayland, Rosales, and probably others, who are mentioned as being famous in their world, but the ones we hear about the most are Herondale and Lightwood because they are the ones most present in the books.
In conclusion, right now (by which I mean the closest-to-current-times releases, like TftSA and TDA), we're constantly being bombarded with how amazing the Herondales are because A. they were already famous before; B. Jace is considered the "best Shadowhunter of their generation"; C. from a reading standpoint, they're one of the families constantly present in the books; D. by TMI, everyone thought they were extinct (which, since Shadowhunters are incredibly prideful, would be considered an incredible loss, to lose such a great line), Jace and Kit were total surprises, no one was expecting there to be more Herondales, so they're kind of freaking out about those two.
