‘Time’s Hand’ Located at the junction of pathways in front of the children’s playground the Edgar’s Field mosaic folly mimics the shape of the large rock outcrop at the back of the park which houses a carved shrine to the Roman goddess Minerva probably carved by the quarry workers when the area was the source of stone for the Roman city of Deva. The shrine is reproduced in the mosaic. #minerva #edgarsfield #chester #cheshire #romanbritain #deva (at Edgars Field) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo_cB21nruB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vk6o4gqrzfng

‘Time’s Hand’ The legend goes that in 973 AD/CE following his coronation at Bath, King Edgar was rowed up the river Dee from his residence in what is now Edgar’s Field Park, by suppliant Kings including Oslac of York, Kenneth II of Scotland and Máel Coluim I of Strathclyde, symbolically solidifying his rule. This scene forms the main scene on the mosaic folly placed in the park. #kingedgar #ad973 #medievalengland #chester #edgarsfield #cheshire #englishhistory (at Edgars Field) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo9uX4mnVfn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=sfz52zlikvbg

‘Time’s Hand’ The river Dee has a long history of salmon fishing and the spot below the weir next to Edgar’s Field originally known as Earl’s Pool, and after 1237 King’s Pool, was a prime location for netting salmon. #edgarsfield #chesterhistory #salmonfishing #riverdee #mosaic #mosaicsculpture (at Edgars Field) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpCKJQBHiLM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i816hs6ma3ze

‘Time’s Hand’ The local stone from the former quarry at Edgar’s Field and the surrounding area has that distinctive pink colour that is so recognisable in Chester’s architecture. Marks of the quarry can still be seen in the park. In this part of the mosaic we can see the Old Dee Bridge. #edgarsfield #chester #architecture #mosaic #olddeebridge (at Edgars Field) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpDdIDUndb1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=180f1kzcaqqqy

‘Time’s Hand’ Discovered nearby were the footprints of Chirotherium, a Triassic ancestor of the crocodile which left its mark some 243 million years ago. #edgarsfield #triassic #chirotherium #chester #mosaicsculpture #mosaicart (at Edgars Field) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo_i1UJnt3j/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5a6beg42k1e2

Crossing Boundaries - Well it certainly sounds like my kind of book. And it features my depiction of King Edgar being rowed up the River Dee by suppliant Kings on the cover... #crossingboundaries #medievalhistory #medievalculture #oxbowbooks #kingedgar #riverdee #chester #chesterhistory #medievalstudies #edgarsfield #cheshire (at Oxbow Books) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnl_yiWn-A7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wgrzkoqphqlt
