My husband used to say my eating disorder responses were like Gollum. For me, I think this is a great metaphor. Gollum represents many things and utter conflict that can go on with an ED. For me this helped me to pause and look at where these responses were coming from. That doesn’t mean I used Gollum as an excuse- Gollum was me, but it was a still me the parts that were struggling against each other. Gollum obsessed over numbers, we are enslaved by the ED, my “precious” was the numbing and the highs of the ED. It’s unsurprising we become “angry, anxious” when we attempt to separate it.
