Why Do I Need a Scarifier and How Do I Use One?
Scarifiers for lawns are an invaluable tool for maintaining the health of your lawn without having to engage in a lot of back-breaking work with a rake. Essentially a Grass Scarifier is a machine that looks a little bit like a lawn mower, but instead of blades for cutting the grass it sports rows of little teeth that are designed to remove the “thatch”, that fine layer of old grass stems, dead moss and other assorted debris that accumulates in a lawn over time.
Thatch is detrimental to the health of a lawn because it crates a barrier which prevents good penetration of water and nutrients into the soil as well as weakening the ability of grass to build a good, strong root system. If left to its own devices this layer of thatch will begin to choke the grass turning your lawn into a mess of moss and weeds.
“Scarifying” is the name given to the raking action that removes all of this accumulated debris. This promotes lawn health by allowing water and nutrients easy access to the soil and taking away the environment in which lawn weeds thrive so that you have to spend less time on weeding. Regular scarifying also helps to aetate the soil which again promotes healthy soil and so delivers a healthier lawn.
You can, of course, scarify your lawn without using a lawn scarifying machine. All you need is a good spring tined rake, a couple of free afternoons and the upper body strength of a gorilla – anyone who has used a rake to scarify a lawn bigger than a postage stamp will tell you that mechanisation is definitely the way to go.
Which scarifier is right for you will depend largely on your lawncare needs, but there are some features that you might want to look for. First of all, remember that this is a labour and time saving device so a self propelled machine such as the Eliet E450 is a good investment. This removes the need to wrestle a heavy machine around a lawn using brute force – a self propelled machine really does do all of the work for you.
Having the scarifying blades rotate in the opposite direction to the drive roller, as they do in the E450 model is also a good feature. This enhances performance while maintaining a steady, well controlled speed. Our team is always happy to give you advice so that you can choose the right scarifier to meet your needs.
Once you have selected the right scarifier for your lawn, how should you put it to best use? First of all, before using your scarifier you should give the lawn a really good, short cut. If the grass is very short it is easier for the scarifier to get down into the base of the lawn to remove thatch effectively and properly aerate the soil. Wait for a dry day before you do this or you will end up with soggy clumps of grass and debris clogging up both your mower blades and your scarifier.
When you start the actual scarifying process, start your machine on a high setting and go over the whole of the lawn a couple of times. Be systematic to make sure that you do not miss anywhere and make each run over the lawn at a different angle. Keep repeating for several passes, lowering the setting of the scarifying blades with each pass. You might find that this proves reveals some bare patches in the lawn, so once the scarifying is done it can be a good idea to sow some grass seed, particularly if you have done your scarifying at the start of the growing season. With a scarifier you can get that perfect lawn without the back breaking work, so take a look at our amazing range today!
