Missouri

Missouri is, it’s a, it’s, hmmm, it’s not easy to put into words. So far every place I’ve seen has been easy to describe, but Missouri is... different. It’s not that there aren’t any defining features of Missouri because there are. The houses are lined along the streets with cars parked neatly in the driveways. The people are private but friendly and go about their days in whichever way their schedule allows them to. There are office buildings, and recreational places, community events, and private gatherings. Missouri has all these defining traits but I still can’t seem to describe what it is that makes it so, so, something. Mare has the radio turned on to the local radio station, and the radio personalty is talking about how the community. They talk about the local school and how students are setting new records. How a local family is asking for donations to help with the newest developments to their neighborhood and how a beloved shop owner is retiring. So many interesting things going on here in Missouri, but I still can’t find the words to describe it. I roll down the window at a stoplight and listen to the city noises. Cars humming, people walking, a constant stream of chatter, all melding together into the sounds of city life, sounds you hear in every city, but different in a way that’s unique only to Missouri. I roll the window back up. Maybe I should give up trying to explain Missouri, maybe that’s just what Missouri is. For whatever it’s worth Missouri was  

I visit him again.He lives on the borders of a posh seaside resort and has access to the private beach.I'm walking into his living room carrying my luggage and dropping it on the floor and start staring at the new painting above the mantelpiece.I am aware that he's watching me intensely and I'm controlling my facial expressions.The seashore is calling me,the room is filled with tension,so I'm running out,taking my clothes off and jumping in the blue water,wondering if he's still watching me,only the water is not as salty as it's supposed to be and it fails to hold me on the surface.I have to swim with all my strength and soon I get tired.I'm walking back to the house on a narrow strip of grass.He's been waiting there for me and we sit down and talk about trivial things,trying to guess how much the other has changed since we'd last met.It seems to me that he's turning more and more into a woman and I don't know if I like that.Thinking about our differences is scary and so we start making out,that never fails to bring us close.I'm trying my mouth,my tongue on his,it's still familiar.Maybe all is not lost.He suddenly stops undressing me and asks me to put a pair of high heels on-there's a bunch of them scattered on the floor,all of them my size.Half naked,I rummage through the pile trying to find the right pair,I want to be done with this as quickly as possible so that we can kiss again.His hair is longish and dark brown like mine but I know it's a wig and that saddens me somehow.I wake up with a warm feeling in my stomach,not pleasant,more like a swamp of unknown depth just under the skin.
