DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 03/04
previous word count: 51,126
current word count: 51,537 (411 words added)
notes: small update today, plus some planning/scene shuffling work. i'm sick and my brain got tired, so i'm quitting while i'm ahead.
snippet: (tw death mention, specifically murder)
“How could you have known?” said Robin quietly behind her. Isi swallowed. “I would like to think I have always known better than violence.” She had been given clear orders, and Bedelia had been lunging for Robin when Isi had killed her. There were a million explanations she might use to justify what she had done. None of them sufficed. She had found it in her to disobey her orders when it came to sparing Enya. Bedelia would have been no threat if Isi had not attacked first. She had found the compassion to hold back, but she had found it too late.

Note
from Dragonsong -
The room had the same grey stone walls as every other part of the prison. But this floor wasn’t cobblestoned. It was smoother. Isi thought she smelled a trace of something metallic in the clean, bare room.
A shiver ran down her spine. The room was bare but for a thick wooden block.
- @akindofmagictoo
How creeeeeepy!! I’m not saying the metallic smell is blood or that the wooden block is a head-chopping-board but... 👀
An excerpt from Cindercast: No one dares even whisper. Even my lungs refuse to take in air, as though the tiny sound of it would shatter some unspoken rule of silence. The King’s ivory silk tunic sallows his equally pale skin, but does not dim the power he so obviously wields, magic or otherwise.
✨ send me an ask with a line from your wip (don’t forget the name of your wip!!) and i reply with a line from mine that i think fits/matches the vibes ✨

HECATE, GODDESS OF THE WITCHES !
Witches
Hecate: Goddess of the Witches! Different traditions of Wicca honour different deities, but Hecate seems to cross all the boundaries. And why not? She is the original boundary-crosser, the Goddess of all doors and gates, all transitions from one place (or state of being) to another. She is the original hedge-sitter, the Hag, the Hex-mistress – all words arising from the same root as Her name. She is the One who has access to all the realms of existence – material Earth, the Heavens, the Underworld…. Hecate stands at the Gateway between the Worlds, as guard and guide.
Hecate’s Herstory The Deities (at least our perception of them) evolve over time. Our earliest records of Hecate (pronounced HECK-a-tay) come from Anatolia, where she was a Goddess of the wilderness, childbirth, and children – a Mother Goddess, a Great Goddess, the source of life. She was the font of bounty, giving endless gifts to those who honour Her. She is now seen as the Crone Goddess, Goddess of the Waning Moon, but this doesn’t bother Her because the Crone is the most powerful and empowered of the stages of womanhood. Originally the Queen of Heaven, Hecate became downplayed and twisted as She was incorporated into Greek mythology. She gradually became seen as a Triple Goddess (the Great Goddess in multiple aspects), and later as only the Crone face of the Triple Goddess. She has been with humankind so long, that She is seen in many aspects, all of which taken together confirm Her status as Great Goddess: Mother of the Gods Goddess of the Earth Goddess of the Underworld, Queen of the Dead, Queen of Ghosts Goddess of Crossroads and Gates Goddess of Sorcery and Magick Light-bringer The one who leads She is associated with Isis as Queen of Heaven, Ereshkigal as Queen of the Underworld, and Artemis as Goddess of the Hunt and Wild Places.
Although later, as Western religion became more devil-oriented, Hecate was considered to be the source of evil spirits and demons, this evolved because She was known originally to protect against them.
Eventually, it was reasoned that if She didn’t like you, She would fail to protect you, so ghosts and demons would get you… a small step to thinking that She was the cause of such things.
Hecate In Modern Wicca
Hecate is the Crone Goddess of Wicca, the third phase of the Moon Goddess.
She is a protector Goddess, implacable yet tender-hearted. She is wise and strong; She knows Herself and all Mysteries. She sees through illusion and deception as if the Truth were a blazing torch.
This doesn’t mean She is easy to understand! In fact, Her wisdom is so profound that no mortal can hope to know it all, or to predict Her actions, which may seem mercurial.
She is also a Karmic Goddess – She upholds the Law of the Universe, the one who doesn’t let you get away with anything, who doesn’t allow you to avoid the consequences of your actions.
So when working with Hecate you must be careful – you may get less than you ask for, more than you expect… or what you really deserve.
She is the Goddess of beginnings as well as endings, and all transformations from one state to another.
She is the Goddess of the Gateway between the worlds, present when we come into this life as well as when we leave it. And though She is implacable, She is not without mercy, generosity, and tenderness of heart.
Hecate is the Reaper, the Goddess of Death – the inexorable tides of time, the pitiless Mother who takes Her children back into Herself.
(There must always be the death of the old, in order for the new to be born, and She clears the way).
The Crescent Moon is Her sickle – the hand-held arc of a knife that was used for harvest. Yes, there is death here, but as always in Nature, the death is in service to life.
She guides souls into birth, and back into the soul’s True Home at death.
Her power is also healing, for as Mother of All, Her compassion is boundless. She holds, and shares, the knowledge of all healing modalities and the uses of plants.
She is the Keeper of the Mysteries. Time and Space
Darkness, Mystery, Spirit Realm – These are Hecate’s domain.
The season of the Dark is Her time. As such, she is associated with the Dark of the Moon.
October 31st, leading into the wintery death of the Earth, is a day to honour Her (among other Samhain traditions).
Since one way of honouring Her is to put out lanterns, it seems as though Jack o'lanterns may have begun as a way to honour or call Hecate (since as Queen of Ghosts She could protect us from harmful spirits).
She is Goddess of the wilderness, the Queen of Magick and the Night, and thus the Queen of Witches.
Her time of greatest power is Midnight.
She is the Goddess of Threshholds, boundaries and hedges, Gates, and the Triple Crossroads where life decisions must be made – wherever you must surrender your other options in order to follow your choices.
She is the guardian of the liminal zones – the border lands, the edges, the place where choices can make the world over. Where 3 roads intersect, Hecate waits to light the way with Her lantern, enabling you to see what each decision will lead to, and cuts the cords that tie you to the past, when you are ready to move forward.
Attributes and Powers
Standing as the bridge to the spirit realm, Hecate is a Goddess of immeasurable power. She is not a soft-and-cuddly Goddess, though.
She is the Grandmother, whose scope of concern goes far beyond the immediate family of spouse and children – the well-being of all humanity, present as well as future, is Her domain.
She knows all your tricks and won’t let you get away with anything… but who also loves you and wants to help protect you.
She honours your own choices, though, and will not protect you from yourself – however She is always there for guidance if you choose to look for Her.
She comes to take the living to the land of death, and so seems hard and even cruel, but She releases us from suffering and illness. Her care is genuine and deep as the universe, but it is not gentle or accommodating.
She is the Crone. Hecate is as virgin as the Maiden, having no consort, complete in Herself. She needs no one, giving Herself away to only Her own calling.
She is the hag, the original witch that patriarchal fairytales scare us with (since nothing is more terrifying or dangerous to the patriarchy than a single woman, fearless in her magickal power).
She does not desire youth nor beauty, love nor fear; veneration and status are meaningless to the Crone.
She knows the ways of Mystery and follows the wisdom She finds within herself. And that is the extent of Her ambition.
Queen of Magick
This is a title that seems a natural for the Goddess of the Boundaries. Witchcraft taps into the forces of creation through a process known as Magick, and Witches are agents of creation. The Great Goddess of Creation is a worthy matron deity.
As the Mother of Creation, Hecate upholds / creates / IS the law of the universe. She is magick.
She has the power to TRANSFORM.
Anything She touches, is changed. And She shares this ability with those who honour Her, teaching us how to create our world to fulfill our visions.
Symbols and Associations
She has ever been associated with dogs, particularly black and female dogs.
The sound of barking dogs was thought to signal her approach.
She is also closely associated with horses, owls, ravens, snakes, and dragons – all creatures of great spiritual or magickal power. Bats, frogs, bears, wolves, lions, and horses are also linked with Her.
She is associated with many plants, particularly those that help induce altered states of consciousness.
Her symbols are torches and lanterns, knives and sickles, ropes, keys, labyrinths and mazes, and pomegranates — all tokens of finding wisdom, moving between the worlds, making choices.
Torch / lantern: to pierce the darkness of illusion and confusion… revealing wisdom,
Key: to unlock the door other realms and mysteries,
Knife or sickle: to cut away the paths we don’t choose, and the past that we can’t return to… including the umbilical cord that ties one to the other world at birth, and the silver cord that ties us to the body at death.
Invoking Hecate
As stated earlier, working with Hecate is tricky. You need to be careful and extremely respectful. I advise not invoking Her until you are skilled in Wicca and know what you’re doing.
Then, you may want to see the next article for some ideas on how to invoke this powerful Wiccan Goddess.
With Bright Blessings,

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 06/01
previous word count: 0
current word count: 8,383
notes: the draft is officially begun and i made a lot of progress! i expect this will get weirder as i divert more and more from draft 1, but hey, we like an easy start. (and there were definitely things that changed!)
[edit: if you thought this word count said 6598 earlier... i got inspired and did more writing hehe]
snippet:
Every movement of her armour echoed off the stone. Isi hoped the dragon would not be alerted to her presence too soon… but then again, it had likely already been disturbed by the quake. And taking her armour off would be an even worse idea. That thought was only further validated when the tunnel opened out into a larger cave, and they caught their first glimpse of the dragon. A small crack in the stone high above them offered just enough light to see the creature. Pale pink, significantly larger than any creature Isi had ever seen… and asleep, it seemed, curled up in a nest of sorts against the far wall. Its scaly sides rose and fell, slowly but rhythmically. Isi paused; the dragon seemed to be no threat right at that moment, so she could take her time. A sweet smell lingered in the cave. The dragon’s nest seemed to be the source: plants and flowers of all colours and sorts stuck out of it, flattened under the dragon’s weight. “It’s beautiful,” breathed Robin behind her. Isi took a deep, slow breath. “It is.” Truly, she had never seen anything like it. And she had orders to kill it.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 06/04
previous word count: 54,876
current word count: 56,692 (1816 words added)
notes: at this point in the draft it's a nice balance of "broadly similar to draft 1" and "tweaking stuff to make it fit properly". i think the character moments are much better this draft :)
snippet: (ft grumpy dragon <3)
As Sierra and Holly left their little campsite, Enya fluttered over and landed on Isi’s shoulder, then smacked her with her tail. “What can I do for you?” Isi asked. Enya grumbled, took off, and landed by the fire SB was halfway through constructing. When Isi stayed where she was, Enya huffed smoke and gestured with her head towards the half-finished fire. “Is she gonna help me light this thing?” SB said. Isi smiled. “I have no idea, but she is hungry, and thinks we should be eating already.” “She’s right. It’s getting late for an evening meal.” “Sierra and Holly will be back soon.” Isi directed her next words to Enya. “Soon, Enya. Soon.” Enya huffed again, then curled up on the ground.

snippet:
SB opened his mouth to continue, but paused at the sound of hoofbeats. Isi turned; Robin rode towards them, at a higher speed that seemed necessary, with a look of urgent concern in his eyes. When he drew level with them, he reined in and said breathlessly, “Isi, we have a problem.” “What sort of problem?” Isi reached for Enya; her fingers met invisible scales. At least Enya was still here. Robin held out a rolled up poster. Isi took it and unrolled it to find her own face staring back at her. She scanned the rest. It offered a reward for her arrest, on charges of harbouring a fugitive. A high reward. She swallowed and glanced back up at Robin. “Me and Holly too,” he added. “And there’s one asking for information about Enya. But SB and Sierra were missing.” Had Meg made it back to the citadel so soon? That seemed unlikely; it had not been long since they had spoken. So then… oh. Of course. Isi sighed and re-rolled the poster. “It seems Brendon has turned us in. He would recognise Holly, and Robin and me, but not you or Sierra.” The specifics were somewhat irrelevant. These posters would be going up in towns across the continent, and the white patches on Isi’s skin were hardly commonplace. “So, I suppose we had better keep our heads down,” she finished.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 01/02
previous word count: 35,874
current word count: 36,589 (715 added)
notes: small update today, but Isi is making Thematic Statements so that's always fun
snippet:
“Why [did you quit]?” Sierra looked to Isi. Isi hesitated. “It was the right thing to do.” Meg had refused to tell her whether she had done the right thing. It had been hard to believe when she’d said it to herself. But saying it out loud made it a little easier to accept. She could not have killed Enya, or turned Robin in… and without Isi, Baya and her town would simply have had to wait for their resident knight to heal, in order to get rid of the capybara. Isi would never change the world, but perhaps there were small things she could change. But that change was not found in knighthood, in polished armour and shiny boots, in titles and uniform and salutes.

snippet: (tw alcohol use/abuse)
“Can you use magic to detect any nearby packs?” Isi said. SB scoffed again. “Ha. No. Not me.” “What do you mean?” Robin frowned. “You helped to hide the children in town. You’re more powerful than you give yourself credit for.” SB just laughed, a sarcastic, empty sound. “That was all you, kid. My magic’s terrible.” “No, it isn’t,” Isi said quietly. “What would you know, knight?” “You helped,” Robin insisted. “We did good back there.” Isi added, “And you helped with Robin’s medication, and lit that fire.” SB leaned back on his log and spread his arms wide. “Oh, I’m sorry. I lit a fire. How could I forget what a great mage I am?” He scowled, got to his feet, and turned towards the horses. “Bullshit.” Robin opened his mouth to speak. SB cut him off. “Here’s the thing, kid. I didn’t help. I couldn’t help. All I did back there was throw some rocks, and stand around uselessly while everyone else rebuilt, because I couldn’t summon a fucking spark to help. But I’m glad you feel good about what you did. I did nothing.” As he spoke, he had been drawing closer and closer to Isi and Robin, swaying slightly and gesturing wildly. And… no, she wasn’t imagining it. Isi could smell alcohol on him.

DRAGONSONG: worldbuilding intro: cool new knight stuff!
i should make more posts about the knights. a lot of work went into that. but for now: the newest stuff! (all subject to change, but i wanted to share)
in this post i discussed the barrier spell and the fact that the continent’s dragons are currently locked away and being experimented on. the current king is especially interested in that.
(tw below for mentions of needles and injection)
also, relatedly, i watched The Witcher recently...
so what’s the king been up to?
he wants to empower his fighting force. why? i’ll work that out eventually. but in the meantime he’s kind of using his fighting force as a police force, which has Issues.
off the back of his experimentation, the king is essentially mutating his knights. all of the newer knights, and any older knights working in the citadel or the castle, have had this done to them. a number of older resident knights have not.
what does it mean for the knights?
knights with the mutation are faster, and have the capacity to become stronger more easily than they might otherwise (and with a higher ‘maximum’ strength)
they also recover from injuries much faster than civilians, taking days or weeks to recover from an injury that might otherwise take months. further, they scar much less easily.
in addition, they are more durable than their civilian counterparts; for example, in the first chapter Isi takes a dragon tail blow to the torso. the same blow dealt to Isi and Sierra would probably leave Sierra with broken ribs; Isi is mostly just bruised.
small downside though... the mutation has to be injected, and not just once. after a certain amount of time (to be decided) the body starts to treat it like poison. so it has to be administered regularly. without it ... Isi doesn’t know of anyone who knows for sure, but it gets unpleasant. she’s definitely heard rumours of people who’ve died from withdrawal. either way, at least in the citadel, it’s impossible to skip a dose and go unnoticed by knight supervisors.
who specifically does this involve? (that we care about)
citadel knights who have been knighted: Isi, Meg, Brendon
castle knights and/or former castle knights: Henry
younger resident knights: Aurelia, Ella
oh, and pretty much any given Antagonist Knight we run across
who isn’t involved?
Robin (not knighted yet), Jasper (older and doesn’t work in the citadel)
all of the civilians: Sierra, Holly, Ebele, Cole, SB, etc.
that’s the main stuff. but as always, it’s not the full extent of my Thoughts (mostly because this has Implications for several arcs), so... i can probably be convinced to infodump more in the future

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 17/01
previous word count: 24,081
current word count: 24,912 (831 added)
notes: i think i'm settling into writing Sierra in relation to Isi, which is good. still trying to balance "Isi is still wary of being in trouble" and "Isi doesn't necessarily think the king is going to spend time and resources pursuing her for Enya". we shall see how that goes. that's what editing is for!
snippet:
Isi sighed. She had thrown away everything she had held dear for more than ten years. It was hard to make it feel like the right choice… even if killing Enya wouldn’t have been the right choice either. If she had not done it, would she still be here now, travelling with Robin, and talking to Sierra? Perhaps she hadn’t thrown away everything she loved. “So, what now?” Sierra said. If Sierra was right about poverty and starvation in the outer parts of the continent—and what reason would she have to lie?—then something in the system had become corrupted. Was that what Isi had been serving? What if she could have changed something as a part of it, as Tor Isadora? Now she was only Isi. What could she do now? “I used to want to change the world,” she said. “I think I still do. But I doubt I have the power to do that anymore.”

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 09/03
previous word count: 46,971
current word count: 51,126 (4155 added)
notes: THAT'S NOT A TYPO! I HAVE WRITTEN FIFTY THOUSAND WORDS!! AND REACHED THE END OF PART 2!! Dragonsong has four 'acts' which i am referring to as 'parts', so we are halfway through the plot! Isi has met Fintan, learned about the barrier spell, and unlocked the quest objectives for the rest of the story (well, most of them).
snippet (this is the very very end of part 2):
Isi wrapped her arms around herself. They had found more dragons, Fintan had not immolated her, and suddenly everything was so much bigger than she had ever expected. The dragons had not been driven out, but imprisoned. The king was experimenting on them to augment his knights. And maybe, just maybe, some of this could be reversed. That thought made her head hurt. She had brought Enya here in order to remove a target from her back, to wash her hands of treason and adventure and all of this. And yet she had just promised to stay here, stay in this fight, without knowing the scope of what lay ahead of her, or just how big her promise might be. But how could she promise anything else? Once upon a time, as a starry-eyed trainee knight buoyed by the optimism that came with ignorance, she had wanted to change the world. She had believed knighthood would give her the power to do that. Under the blow of the supervisor’s whip, she had learned that she had never had that kind of power. And now, face to face with a real live dragon, a chill ran down her spine. Alone, there was nothing she could do for the dragons. She did not have the strength to break their chains, and she certainly did not have the means to bring down the barrier spell. She certainly could not singlehandedly stop the king. But she could help. She could do something, even if it was small. Even if it required her to get her hands dirty. Perhaps she did not have the power to change the world, but she was not powerless.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 31/01
previous word count: 32,036
current word count: 35,874 (3838 added)
notes: settling in! some fun stuff happening i didn't plan on for Isi's arc -- she considered striking out on her own, but everyone was like "No". it took me a second to sort out why Sierra wanted to come with, but we got there!
also @ellatholmes i got a whole extra scene with Ella into this draft hehe
snippet:
“I would not blame you if you didn’t want to be associated with me, if there are knights coming for me.” Isi rested her hand on the hilt of her sword, directing her words primarily to Sierra. “I can go on my own, and take another way to the mountains.” “Absolutely not,” Robin snapped. “I’m coming with you.” “And then what?” said SB. “Your knight buddies catch up to you again, and you’re all on your own to deal with them? Even in armour, you can’t win that kind of fight.” “Nor can you,” Isi said. “If I go alone, you will be safe.” Robin snorted. “Good one. I’m a mage. I’ve never been safe.” “That is no reason to put yourself in danger.” Sierra set down her canteen, rose to her feet, and approached Isi. Instead of stopping an arm’s length or so away, she walked right up to her so that they were practically chest to chest. “Listen to me.” She prodded Isi in the collarbone. Her lip quivered, but she quickly mastered it, turning it into a scowl. “You are not leaving me again.” The prod had not been ungentle, but the spot seemed to throb. Isi stood in silence for a moment, too stunned to say anything. “Don’t you dare try to tell me it’s for my own fucking good, either,” Sierra continued. “I’m coming with you too, and that’s final.” Tears stung Isi’s eyes. Sierra might be angry with her, but clearly not angry enough to walk away. She had not exactly earned that, so she would treasure it.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 25/01
previous word count: 27,441
current word count: 32,036 (4595 added)
notes: i reached 30k! this is not a drill! and i am having fun adding some more thematic elements to the earlier sections. hopefully this is making Isi's character arc more solid.
we also find out about Meg being secretly not very loyal much earlier in this draft!
snippet:
“So yes, I was sent to bring you in. But I unfortunately did not find you here, so it seems the information we were given was faulty. I shall have to return empty-handed.” [Meg] stepped closer to Isi, fixing her with a stern gaze. “Listen to me very carefully. When I return, the king will double down. I persuaded him to let me take a small party and search subtly. But when I tell him I have failed, whatever he does will not be quiet.” Isi understood. When Meg returned to the citadel, Isi would be all but out of time. “I am trying to—” Isi began. Meg cut her off. “I don’t want to know where you’re going. The less I know, the better. But take this.” She held out a package wrapped in brown cloth. Isi took it. Metal clinked inside it. “Your armour,” said Meg. “You left it behind. I borrowed it back. If you’re going to get yourself into trouble, do it with armour.” “Thank you,” Isi said, “but why are you doing this?” Meg pressed her lips together for a moment, thinking. “Because you’re right. Because you have a good heart, and you should follow it. Don’t let the king beat it out of you.” “You told me to go south, and stay away from Enya. Stay out of trouble.” Meg smiled, though Isi thought she saw the gleam of a tear in one eye. “I knew you wouldn’t listen to me. Not this time. So I will not tell you what to do, but I can buy you some time. The rest is up to you.”

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 07/01
previous word count: 8,383
current word count: 13,072 (4,689 added)
notes: well, Isi has now quit her job, but she is not done encountering The Consequences. the king is very much Not Happy with her. also, shoutout to the random background character i named Lawrence, and Murphy the cat. (Murphy the cat got spooked when a small earthquake caused a vase to shatter, and Isi had to rescue him from the roof)
snippet: [tw for a mention of ceremonial self-harm]
“Isi…” whispered Robin. It carried in the silent room. He didn’t want her to do this. She didn’t want to do this either, but she had orders to follow. She had sworn an oath promising just that. She could not disobey. She closed her eyes. In her mind, she was eighteen years old again, kneeling before the throne and gashing her palm with a ceremonial dagger. With blood dripping down her hand, she had sworn to follow her king’s orders and uphold the law… and to protect the innocent. What was more innocent than a baby? Enya’s only crime was being in the wrong place, and if anyone was to blame for that, it was Isi. When she opened her eyes, it was to see the king leaning forward on his throne, watching her intently. Behind him, every eye was trained on her. He had given her an order. She cast the sword aside. It rang on the stone floor, but the sound seemed suddenly very far away. Blood roared in Isi’s ears. She lifted her chin. “No.” One word, but it cut the silence like a blade. “Excuse me?” The king’s voice was soft and smooth, but there was a tone of danger beneath it. “I said no, your majesty. I will not do this. I swore to defend the innocent, and I will not murder a baby.” She squared her shoulders. Just as she had not had it in her to take Enya’s life the day she found her, she could not bring herself to do it now.

DRAGONSONG: draft 2 update: 08/01
previous word count: 13,072
current word count: 14,919 (1,847 added)
notes: Isi has now encountered More Consequences for talking back to the king. notably getting whipped. not a fun time. next stop is to figure out what to do with her life ... and she figures if she's already in a load of trouble, she might as well keep going.
snippet:
A knock sounded on her door. It might have been minutes later; it might have been hours. Isi didn’t know how long she had sat there, the unused bandages still in her hands, tears streaming down her face. She was in no good state to be seen. But what else could she do? She wiped her eyes and stood, a little unsteadily, to answer it. When she opened the door to see Meg, her first instinct was to shut it again. But before she could do so, Meg was already moving forward. “Give me your medical kit.” “What?” Isi instinctively backed up a step. “So I can clean you up.” “I can do it—” Isi protested. Meg cut her off. “But you’re not doing it. Sit.” Isi was too stunned to object, and too tired to think. Meg shut the door behind her, collected Isi’s medical kit from her bed, and pointed to Isi’s dining room chairs. “Sit.” Isi sat.
