Prosecutors practically made Watts out to be a monster, saying she tried to "plunge" the fetus down the drain and left the child floating in the basin while going about her day. However, Watts' attorneys say she's being punished for a rather normal occurrence.

Brittany Watts, 33, learned Thursday her case will be moving forward to a grand jury. Watts is charged with Abuse of Corpse in the miscarriage of a non-viable fetus. Watts’ water broke when she was 22 weeks pregnant. She went to the hospital twice seeking treatment for the life-threatening miscarriage. Twice she was sent away. Ohio laws have created an environment where doctors are refusing care for fear of prosecution or loss of medical license. The standard of care for any pregnancy at that stage is immediate admission with surgical removal. In losses at this gestational age, the risk of retaining parts of the placenta or developing life threatening infections are extremely high. Watts was sent home twice, despite the standard of care.
Watts went home and later passed the deceased non-viable fetus in the toilet. Watts flushed the contents of the miscarriage and it became lodged in the toilet.
Watts said she felt something hit the water and flushed. The coroner called someone in to remove the toilet to retrieve the contents intact. She was arrested and charged with Abuse of Corpse shortly after miscarrying. It’s unclear at this stage how investigators learned about the miscarriage. Unconfirmed repeots say she felt something pass and flushed, then realizing it might be the passing of the non-viable fetus, called for help. This is not reflected in court documents as all evidence will be heard by a grand jury. This was a statement provided by a family member on social media.
Forensic pathologist Dr. George Sterbenz testified an autopsy found no injury to the fetus, and that the unborn fetus had died before passing through the birth canal. “This fetus was going to be non-viable. It was going to be non-viable because she had premature ruptured membranes — her water had broken early — and the fetus was too young to be delivered,” Sterbenz said.
Watts has no criminal history and the forensic pathologist testified the fetus was not exposed to drugs or alcohol and the fetus died of natural causes in utero.
This is terrifying. Miscarriages occur in a large % of pregnancies. This in furiates me.
