Ness silently yawned as they stirred from their sleep, looking to their clock. It was only 11:30 at night… They barely slept for three hours, and feeling thirsty, figured they could grab some water before going back to bed. They made their way out of their room quietly, surprised to find the light in the kitchen was on. Then the familiar voice of their mother filled their ears.
“Enid I’ve been trying, no matter how hard I practice I can’t get the hang of this sign language thing! Orion is acting like I’m half-assing this but I just can’t get the lessons to stick!” Her voice is frustrated as she worked on the dishes.
Ness felt a twinge of guilt in their chest as they approached the kitchen carefully, peeking from behind a wall, watching their mother talk on the crow.
“It’s my fault she’s like this in the first place. It’s so hard watching her struggle in school or with other kids, but I’m the bad guy for trying to find easy alternatives for her. Not everyone is going to take the time to learn sign language to understand what she wants to say!” Jasmyn placed a plate down, “the caption spell is an easy way for her to express herself to everyone but I’m the bad guy for finding it.” Ness couldn’t hear the voice of the woman on crow very well, only knowing she was her mother’s friend.
“Enid… I’m just tired… it hurts so much to not understand her.. to not be able to hear her laugh, not know if something is wrong cause I can’t hear her cry, I hear what the other parents say about her and I just can’t handle it..” Ness looked down, they didn’t mean to cause their mother so much pain. They wondered how they could help make things easier for her, but they were pulled from their thoughts hearing their mother mumble her next words, “Who would want a broken witch..?”
Ness’s eyes widened and filled with tears. Silent sobs escaped them as they backed up. Their silent breathing was ragged, their ears ringing as they rushed off, going to the bathroom and locking themself inside. Ness sat on the floor sobbing into their knees.
Was this why they had no friends? Why all the grownups had that sad look in their eye when they spoke to them? Because they were broken? They always knew they were cursed, they were annoyed by the bullying caused by it, but they never once considered themself broken before now. But things started falling into place.
Ness stared in the mirror, tears running down their face as memories flashed across their thoughts. Kids stealing their books or toys and challenging them to speak up. People deciding for them since they couldn’t say otherwise. People either talking over them or ignoring them completely. The constant feelings of loneliness and something they couldn’t quite place before now.
The feeling of not knowing if they existed or not. The world went on around them, people acted like they were invisible. Nothing ever happened to them, solitude, the only place they felt they belonged. Were they doomed to live like this forever? To watch the world spin while they stood frozen in time? Their mind continued to spiral before they jolted awake, eyes wide and silently gasping for air.
Vyn had fallen asleep in the forest hide out they felt so safe in. It had been a while since that memory played through their mind like that. They stood and picked up their bag debating which path to take home. They looked at their ankle, the concealment stone latched around it and hidden in their sneaker. Maybe they would stop by the night market and ground themself a bit more before getting home. Vyn let out a silent breath and just started walking back towards town.

Don't wake me up, I am still dreaming
The story's undone, unraveled at the seams
Don't wake me up, death is misleading
And when I fall asleep, sleep with a ghost

Blog Event - Bardic Birthday! - Drabble
“You didn’t have to come out here.” Eryn said with a nervous chuckle as his daughter landed her staff, a peacock palisman topping her staff.
“of course I did! Why would I miss my little Vanny’s birthday?”
Eryn sighed, “their name is Vyn,” he corrected.
“Right, right, Van” Jasmyn replied looking around, “where is my silent angel?”
Eryn felt irritation fill him, he knew his daughter was just doing this to force Vyn to interact with her. “At school. They’ll be home in a bit, you could help me if you’d like to be usefu-“ he was cut off as Jasmyn got on her staff,
“i’ll go wait for class to end so I can pick them up!” and with that she was gone. Eryn sighed deeply calling the school and asking them to let Vyn know their mother would be there. He didn’t want them blindsided by it.
