A Brief Guide about Docker for Developer in 2023
Tumblr media
What is Docker? Docker is a tool designed to make it easier to create, deploy, and run applications by using containers. Docker is based on the idea of containers, which are a way of packaging software in a format that can be easily run on any platform.
Docker provides a way to manage and deploy containerized applications, making it easier for developers to create, deploy, and run applications in a consistent and predictable way. Docker also provides tools for managing and deploying applications in a multi-container environment, allowing developers to easily scale and manage the application as it grows.
What is a container? A container is a lightweight, stand-alone, and executable package that includes everything needed to run the software, including the application code, system tools, libraries, and runtime.
Containers allow a developer to package up an application with all of the parts it needs, such as libraries and other dependencies, and ship it all out as one package. It allows developers to package an application with all of its dependencies into a single package, making it easier to deploy and run the application on any platform. This is especially useful in cases where an application has specific requirements, such as certain system libraries or certain versions of programming languages, that might not be available on the target platform.
What is Dockerfile, Docker Image, Docker Engine, Docker Desktop, Docker Toolbox? A Dockerfile is a text file that contains instructions for building a Docker image. It specifies the base image to use for the build, the commands to run to set up the application and its dependencies, and any other required configuration.
A Docker image is a lightweight, stand-alone, executable package that includes everything needed to run the software, including the application code, system tools, libraries, and runtime.
The Docker Engine is the runtime environment that runs the containers and provides the necessary tools and libraries for building and running Docker images. It includes the Docker daemon, which is the process that runs in the background to manage the containers, and the Docker CLI (command-line interface), which is used to interact with the Docker daemon and manage the containers.
Docker Desktop is a desktop application that provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for working with Docker. It includes the Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, and other tools and libraries for building and managing Docker containers.
Docker Toolbox is a legacy desktop application that provides an easy way to set up a Docker development environment on older versions of Windows and Mac. It includes the Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, and other tools and libraries for building and managing Docker containers. It is intended for use on older systems that do not meet the requirements for running Docker Desktop. Docker Toolbox is no longer actively maintained and is being replaced by Docker Desktop.
A Fundamental Principle of Docker: In Docker, an image is made up of a series of layers. Each layer represents an instruction in the Dockerfile, which is used to build the image. When an image is built, each instruction in the Dockerfile creates a new layer in the image.
Each layer is a snapshot of the file system at a specific point in time. When a change is made to the file system, a new layer is created that contains the changes. This allows Docker to use the layers efficiently, by only storing the changes made in each layer, rather than storing an entire copy of the file system at each point in time.
Layers are stacked on top of each other to form a complete image. When a container is created from an image, the layers are combined to create a single, unified file system for the container.
The use of layers allows Docker to create images and containers efficiently, by only storing the changes made in each layer, rather than storing an entire copy of the file system at each point in time. It also allows Docker to share common layers between different images, saving space and reducing the size of the overall image.
Some important Docker commands: – Here are some common Docker commands: – docker build: Build an image from a Dockerfile – docker run: Run a container from an image – docker ps: List running containers – docker stop: Stop a running container – docker rm: Remove a stopped container – docker rmi: Remove an image – docker pull: Pull an image from a registry – docker push: Push an image to a registry – docker exec: Run a command in a running container – docker logs: View the logs of a running container – docker system prune: Remove unused containers, images, and networks – docker tag: Tag an image with a repository name and tag There are many other Docker commands available, and you can learn more about them by referring to the Docker documentation.
How to Dockerize a simple application? Now, coming to the root cause of all the explanations stated above, how we can dockerize an application.
First, you need to create a simple Node.js application and then go for Dockerfile, Docker Image and finalize the Docker container for the application.
You need to install Docker on your device and even check and follow the official documentation on your device. To initiate the installation of Docker, you should use an Ubuntu instance. You can use Oracle Virtual Box to set up a virtual Linux instance for that case if you don’t have one already.
Caveat Emptor Docker containers simplify the API system at runtime; this comes along with the caveat of increased complexity in arranging up containers.
One of the most significant caveats here is Docker and understanding the concern of the system. Many developers treat Docker as a platform for development rather than an excellent optimization and streamlining tool.
The developers would be better off adopting Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) systems rather than managing the minutia of self-hosted and managed virtual or logical servers.
Benefits of using Docker for Development and Operations:
Docker is being talked about, and the adoption rate is also quite catchy for some good reason. There are some reasons to get stuck with Docker; we’ll see three: consistency, speed, and isolation.
By consistency here, we mean that Docker provides a consistent environment for your application through production.
If we discuss speed here, you can rapidly run a new process on a server, as the image is preconfigured and is already installed with the process you want it to run.
By default, the Docker container is isolated from the network, the file system, and other running processes.
Docker’s layered file system is one in which Docker tends to add a new layer every time we make a change. As a result, file system layers are cached by reducing repetitive steps during building Docker. Each Docker image is a combination of layers that adds up the layer on every successive change of adding to the picture.
The Final Words Docker is not hard to learn, and it’s easy to play and learn. If you ever face any challenges regarding application development, you should consult 9series for docker professional services.

Greetings from a cloudy Troyes in the Aube département of France. It’s 7c, raining and I think we are due 11c and a drier day. Not that it matters to me I am still ensconced in my hospital room 13 days after arriving.
The arrival of my eldest son may well give them the impetus to send me home, as there will be someone with me 24/7, for a few days.
When I came into hospital I brought my usual notebook, pen in bag etc, well the pen only ran out the first Thursday I was here (wish I could have joined it 😂). Now, a week later I asked for a pen and was given a whole brand new one to keep ……. the notebook is filling up nicely now with diary notes, questions etc.
Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, a big greeting to all of the mothers being feted by sons and daughters throughout the Kingdom.
I am going to introduce the music section, this was prompted by a telephone call before I was admitted to hospital. I was talking to a friend in North East England about “back in the day”, as they say, and talking of artists, she recalled going to see the amazing Sylvester in a night club in MIDDLESBROUGH! Yes they brought Soul artists from the States and they performed amongst the Steel workers, dockers etc of the grimy north east. So with this in mind here are two records I love . The first is back to 1974, ( I remember it well 😂) it’s the Isley Brothers with “Summer Breeze”. The second one is from three years earlier 🙈, 1971, and it’s The Four Tops with “Simple Game”. Enjoy, oldies but classics.
Now let’s concentrate on me! I was so “out of it” a couple of days last week, I remembered dreaming of speaking French and then there I was telling myself the phrase isn’t correct! Well I must admit that dream really did do something because I am now speaking more French to the nurses, taxi driver, Uncle Tom Cobley and all. I have even been (dare I utter it) reading the booklet on the next stage of treatment which is all in French, wow, I understand so very much, there are jottings in the margins now in case I lose this new talent!
I had a bit of bad news in the early part of the week. I heard of four people who had passed away! One was Marie-Therese who I visited London with a couple of years ago. Her son rang me and I really had to give in to tears. However, she had had a good life, she would have been 88 years old on the 6 March! A couple were relatives of friends and my kind next door neighbour and another a man I knew from when we were all in our 20’s.
I received a telephone call giving me the date of the next PET scan, 20 March, let’s hope I am at home for a break before then 🤣. Then, I got the appointment at the hospital in Paris, for the consultation on the next steps in my treatment, that was on Friday. Fortunately the doctor spoke excellent English and I had quite pertinent questions to ask. All being well, I will go there for harvesting of leucocytes towards the end of March. After that I think I should be called “The Combined Harvester” as I will have had stem cells and leucocytes harvested 😂.
As I have said my eldest son “The Photographer” is coming to see me. If I ever get out of here, we will do a lot of the jobs I need to be done (mainly computer work) and tidy things up there.
It’s the weekend before “The Reconnect Navigator’s” birthday so celebrations are taking place. A nice evening out last evening, wonderful!
“The Trainee Solicitor” has lots on his mind as in pricing up for new items in the house. It’s not that they are just cosmetic they are actually needed. So investing now could see benefits later.
I had a video call with my gorgeous grandchildren yesterday. My grandson was a bit confused he thought I was taking a bath when in fact I was laid in the hospital bed. Well he is only a young boy so that’s fine.
Now to the newest member of the “clan”, “The Jetsetter”. I am not quite sure of the schedule of “turnarounds” she will be doing over the next few months but after arriving back from Norway, I guess washing is all done and a change of clothes for the change of temperatures. Plus am sure it is going to be warmer in Italy. Not too sure of the region but have a wonderful time indeed.
Well guess you can’t always guarantee good weather, as I had a holiday in the Alto Adige region of Italy (a long time ago). It was August and in Trafoi where I stayed it was rather pleasant weather. Friends and I caught the bus to the top of the Stelvio Pass only to find it snowing and a nice cover there was too (especially for someone wearing sandals 🙈). The bus had to put snow chains on to come back down the hairpin bends. What an adventure that was!
It looks as if we have caught up with all of my news. The beauty of the two hour drive to Paris and back is that being in the Saint-Antoine district there are wonderful sites to see. Last year it was the Gare du Lyon, this time it was “The Bastille”. I was lucky to catch the couple enjoying a stroll and looking towards the monument then further along, on the bridge over the Seine, where we were fortunate to be stuck in traffic for another view.
I wish you all a good week until next week.

So I’ve been on a Star Trek kick lately, and the episodic nature of Strange New Worlds framed around the personal logs, combined with LITERALLY living through major historical events this decade made me decide that my New Years Resolution for 2024 should be to keep a diary/logbook.
…however I ALSO have lots of experience as an amateur archivist, and so I wanted to figure out a fairly future proof way of keeping said diary. This IMMEDIATELY ruled out various journaling apps for me, since most of them are proprietary, with no way to ensure your data is preserved if the company closes or just decides to do more rent seeking.
So I started poking around with various open source journaling softwares. My girlfriend pointed me at Standard Notes, which she’s been using for a few years, so I decided to take a look at it. I poked around their website for a bit, and discovered that they had the ability to let me self-host a server for my notes, which was a MAJOR plus for me, from an archival point of view (since my data would be local to my device AND on a server, but a server I have physical access to)
I ended up with a few questions that the website could not answer for me, so I emailed their support team and they got back to me very promptly with answers to my questions. They also sent me the link to a demo version with all the paid feature unlocked, so I could test them out.
I ended up deciding that the features would work perfectly for me, both mobile and desktop abilities. In particular, I really liked the Daily log feature for my diary plans, but the demo also had really cool features that I could see my self using for other things, like spreadsheets, code editors, and checklists. I also really like the concept of the Web Clipper, as someone who often needs to make notes on websites, although I have not set it up yet.
After playing with the demo for a bit, I was pretty sure I liked the options Standard Note had, so I started working on getting the self hosted server set up for myself.
I had a couple false starts getting it set up, because (as someone moderately familiar with open source software) I first went to GitHub for setup instructions, and the complete setup info was not there, but was instead on the Standard Notes website. The basic setup instructions for getting the server running locally were super easy to follow, and I only had one minor issue with changing the ports (I flipped the order they needed to be in since I wasn’t super familiar with Docker)
… And then I got to the part about securing my server, which is where I started to run into issues. My girlfriend had previously set up my server with Navidrome (basically open source Spotify), so when I started to follow the Standard Notes instructions for securing https traffic and saw the instructions wanted me to install nginx directly on my server, I immediately had a few red flags, as I knew my girlfriend had set that up in Docker for Navidrome. After consulting with her, I pulled code she had written to dockerize nginx for Navidrome and modified it for Standard Notes.
And then when I ran it it IMMEDIATELY failed with duplicate port options. Turns out that the ports modifications I had done earlier were conflicting with the ones I wanted to expose with nginx (…because they were the same ones 🤦‍♂️) so I updated the standard notes docker container to not expose anything directly on my server, and made the nginx container the only one in charge of exposing ports on my server.
And with one more run, SUCCESS! I could access the self hosted server page from both my server and my phone (which I pulled off my home network to experiment)
And once the server was running, adding my self-hosted address to the phone app and web app maintained by Standard Notes was SUPER easy! Just updating a single address in the login!
I’m super excited to use this as my new journaling app for 2024, and maybe even replace my various note taking softwares (Apple notes, Google Drive, Notes Plus) with it!

Top 6 Practices to Harden Docker Images to Enhance Security
Tumblr media
Dockers can be considered equivalent to containers. Different verses of tools and platforms of containers are being used to develop containers to work more profitably. However, there are so many principles for protecting applications based on the container by collaborating with other secured applications.
We have described top 6 practices for Docker security into the most widespread Docker consulting that will be beneficial to build secure containers. If we see the infrastructure of traditional applications, we will find that the apps were hosted on bare or virtual machines.
On the other hand, containers are being used in Dockers that undermine the presumptions of clarity in the application. Due to this, many users face obstacles during the migration of Dockers and compare the usage of containers.
The user may have disorderly containers and servers, blind spots, or a much unprotected environment if you do not have an absolute arrangement and regular sustenance. If you’re also looking to work on Docker, you can take trusted docker consulting from 9series.
Through this article, we are going to discuss the most convenient practices for the security of Docker:
1. Confinement of network post convenience
Network ports are the most secure way to protect containers. The developers need to access the extra network ports to avoid hurdles at the development of the new container. After the image is entered into a composition or open internet atmosphere, it removes all the additional network ports.
While using Docker command-line interface (CLI), try to use the p parameters so that you can set limitations on host-to-container port mappings.
2. Apply Insignificant base images
The images in Docker are usually built on the top of “base images” to avoid the configuration of the image from scratching because it can cause a principal security issue. The component base images can also be used that are completely useless for your purposes.
Although, the additional component that you are using can expand the attack surface of your image. So it is necessary to select the base images carefully that can complement your target. If possible, you can also build a depreciated base image of your own.
3. Use of Docker Compose
This is the final way to harden your containers of Docker that you can combine all the files into Docker compose files. We can make them a public endpoint or public user access for the front end only when separating your network in the docker-compose method.
With this, your database will be limited only to container-to-container communication than the specific links. This method will increase the security of Dockers to the next level because there will be no public use that can connect to databases.
This method can be considered the most robust method of network segmentation for the architecture of the application. In this, all you need to divide the public-facing is the depletion of a flat network of containers.
There is no need to expose the database to the public internet. All they need is the minimal link of the narrow network so that you can communicate to the web series. As a result, when the database has been restricted, the chances of security issues decrease.
4. Secure the Host
The host is more protected than the Docker environment means if the host is compromised, then the containers are also at risk. So if you want to secure your containers, then first harden the host of containers, including an operating system, kernel versions, and system software. You can also do continuous patching and auditing for the hardening of the host.
5. Use Multi-Stage Builds
If you want your containers in an organized manner, then nothing can be better than a multi-stage build that provides operational and advantages of security. In this method, you can develop an intermediate container with all the necessary tools to generate the final artifact.
So lastly, only the final artifact will be copied in the final image without building temporary files or any developmental dependencies. Although it will only build the minimal binary files and the dependencies required for the final image without any intermediate files.
6. Use metadata labels for images
Labeling containers is the most basic practice that refers to the objects. The users can apply labels for additional information about the container. You can also characterize the containers by using tags, and this is what they are used for.
Conclusions
We hope that these fundamental points will help you to maintain a protected atmosphere for the container applications. As a result, The Center for Internet Security has put together a comprehensive benchmark for Docker with security guidelines for the Docker server software.
Now you can enjoy the advantages of Docker containers with the help of docker consulting from 9series without any obstacles in security only by using the outlined practices in the benchmark of CIS.
