Palworld is pretty fun! This is my first ever base.
And I don't know how rare lucky pals are, but I found two of them last night. Depresso and Direhowl!

Palworld is great because it's allowing me to live my dreams of easily providing for my pets and then going to rob poachers before getting on my horse and riding away into the sunset triumphantly

i gotta stop scrolling through the palworld tumblr/twitter search holy shit my brain is rotting.
Palworld did not use AI in it's designs oh my god. the initial trailer for the game dropped in 2021, before AI art generation really kicked off into high-gear, and you can see many designs there that are finalized for the final game. You can look at the original trailer here. No doubt that many other creature designs were also finalized during this time.
Additionally, lets also look at what AI pokemon actually DID look like at the time:
... these look absolutely nothing like palworld designs. palworld designs are very deliberate "pokemon but legally distinct" or "two pokemon mashed together", wheras these are an amalgamation of all the pokemon available at the time. if anyone remembers the melty surreal AI of the time, you know there's no way to ask it to give you a "normal type lycanroc" and have it produce direhowl's design.
I also feel like this whole discourse around accusing the team of using AI for their monster designs does a disservice to the completely original designs in the game? because believe it or not, there are a lot of wholly unique designs in this game! my personal favorites so far being Tombat, Swee, and Caprity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if it turns out that everything truly was AI generated then that's egg on my face. you're allowed to have your opinions on the plagiarism of palworld's monster designs, but don't go around spreading false information you read online just because it sounds true and makes the game look worse.

Debunking the Palworld plagiarism claims
One of the biggest sources of drama since the release of Palworld has been the repeated accusations of plagiarism made by Pokemon fans. Now I'm not going to argue that Palworlds designs are 100% original. That's not the point of my post. Rather my argument is an objection to the unspoken assumption made by Pokemon fans that Pokemon and it's creature designs are so unique that any resemblance between a Pokemon character and a Palworld character is proof that Palworld "stole" from Pokemon.
When people point out the fact that all art is derivative to some degree. Pokemon fans will object with the profoundly idiotic "Blue Pikachu argument."
Tumblr media
The Blue Pikachu argument is the idiotic idea that anything that isn't 100% original is a 100% copy paste with no middle ground. It's a false dichotomy made by people with zero understanding of nuance and who just want to make a lazy gotcha.
The reality is, art is not a purely individualistic act. All artists either consciously or unconsciously iterate on preexisting art. In fact many past artists that are celebrated as great artists today would be considered plagiarists by modern standards. For example Shakespeare's plays take heavily from from other artists of that era.
Tumblr media
More importantly modern copyright laws were not created in order to ensure every artist is 100% original. Nor does copyright protect ideas or concepts.
Tumblr media
source
Despite this I have scene Pokemon fans vilify the PocketPair CEO because he said that he takes ideas from other sources. Which is completely legal and not remotely unethical.
Tumblr media
Statements like this indicate to me a person that is very uninformed about art and video games in particular. Tons of games are "copied" from previous games. Minecraft was copied from Infiniminer. Fortnite was copied from Pubg. Pokemon like every other video game has taken ideas from other games. Shin Megami Tensei and Dragon Quest V both had monster collecting and taming before Pokemon even existed.
So now we have to ask ourselves how "original" are any Pokemon designs. And the truth is many Pokemon designs are literally just animals with elemental themed colors slapped on them
Poliwag is literally just a glass frog tadpole colored blue.
Tumblr media
And Caterpie is a caterpillar colored a slightly different shade of green.
Tumblr media
Now some of the animals Pokemon uses for inspiration are obscure enough that people might not realize when Pokemon is just taking animals and recoloring them.
But then you have Lycanroc which is based on a animal so commonly known you can't help but notice it's just a ordinary wolf with some spikes slapped on it inorder to make it rock type.
Tumblr media
Lycanroc and Direhowl are just wolves with mild cartoon exaggeration. Sorry but Pokemon can't copyright wolves.
And this isn't the only example of a Pokemon and a Pal looking similar because Pokemon just recolored a real animal.
Next we have Shaymin and Jolthog
Tumblr media
People that say Jolthog is a copy of Shaymin are basically just admitting they have never seen a real hedgehog before.
Tumblr media
Then there are the people that say that pengullet and piplup look alike because they are both blue.
Tumblr media
When that's just because they are both based on blue fairy penguins.
Tumblr media
The reality is many Pokemon designs are just real life animals with tweaks to make them more cartoonish and magical looking.
Of course not every Pokemon design is a slightly tweaked animal. A lot of them are also "rip offs" of kaiju.
Tumblr media
Of course some people are going to defend Pokemon "blatantly ripping off" character designs from other franchises by saying. "But they did it in their own way, it's not an exact copy". When that is the same thing being said by fans of Palworld. In other words"
"When I like it that's "inspiration". When I don't like it, that's "theft."

So fun little note about Palworld's pal ai:
Tumblr media
When other Pals are defeated, most carnivorous Pals will not only completely ignore you (as opposed to instantly aggro-ing on you when ur in Line of sight), but they have animations of EATING the deafeated/dead Pal.
These two Direhowls actively beelined towards this mammorest after it got destroyed by another and startes just going to town.
It was also actively seen in Gobfins, lil humanoid sharkfolk, as they ate one of their own after it was defeated.
Not only is it a viable strategy to get hostile Pals off ur back, its an interesting set of behaviors that really really makes the world feel more alive.

PalWorld absolutely 100% has creatures that are pokemon ripoffs. But so many of the accusations I've been seeing are like... picking the ones that are just based on the same things rather than the true ripoffs.
"Lamball is a ripoff of wooloo!" ... it's a sheep. Sheep look like that.
"Pengullet is a ripoff of piplup!" ... it's just a penguin.
Or the one I see a lot: "Direhowl is a ripoff of lycanroc!" It's just a wolf! Wolves look like that! Animated wolves look a LOT like that.
Are there ripoffs in the game? YES! But try picking the ones that actually are instead of the ones that are just pulling from the same inspiration please.

some more thoughts regarding Palworld
I'm actually beginning to wonder if the Pals that are so similar to Pokemon can be traced back to a freelancer or two. lots of freelancers were hired for the development of Palworld. while some Pals heavily resemble already existing Pokemon, they are kinda in the minority of the overall Pal designs, it has plenty of original designs
also wrt plagiarism accusations, I honestly think it's just best left to courts to decide in any potential lawsuits. not that tipping copyright holders for possible plagiarism is bad, but that's all it is. a tip. best to just let actual lawyers who study these laws to judge (and even actual copyright and IP lawyers will tell you just how freaking tangled copyright laws are) in the even of a possible lawsuit
#and while i'm in the camp that some of the plagiarism accusations towards palworld are a reach i won't lie#some of those designs fly far too close to the sun#like direhowl#'there are only so many ways to design a wolf' please look at the wolves in digimon i'm begging you#as well as wolves from other media#there are plenty of ways to design wolves. even the most literal down to earth wolf#i'm not a lawyer and i don't want to say for sure if i think direhowl is plagiarized but it's def one of the more uninspired pals#along with verdash#on the other hand i'd be interested in hearing from an actual lawyer whether splices constitute plagiarism or not#like ok i'll admit i like dinossom but i acknowledge it's a splice of already existing pokemon#shadowbeak too#love the design but i know it's just a splice of arceus and silvally with a gryphon spin#still that design fucks#i also kinda like the centaur ceruledge pals they look p cool#cmon pokemon give us actual centaurs#also if pocketpair do get hit with a lawsuit i really hope all they'll have to do is replace pals that look too much like pokemon#i'm afraid of a lawsuit scenario which is ruled in favor of TPC bc of potential precedents that could be set#that go on to hamper creativity and innovation#and the monster taming genre is already as monopolized as is by nintendo#other developers have been prying that control away slowly throughout the years and there's been a more general acceptance of other games#but there needs to be more#palworld#hazy rambles#also i do wonder if there could possibly be a day where palworld is released on a nintendo system#think about it#game has been selling like crazy and nintendo def wants a piece of that pie#and pocketpair would reach an even bigger audience#everyone would win in that scenario
