DÍA DE LA RAZA, RESISTENCIA INDÍGENA ó PUEBLOS INDÍGENAS. Día de la Raza es el nombre con el que se denomina la fiesta del 12 de octubre en conmemoración del descubrimiento de América por el navegante Cristóbal Colón en 1492. Día de la Raza se celebra el 12 de octubre en la mayor parte de Hispanoamérica, en España , en Estados Unidos y Venezuela entre otros países. Fue creado a partir del siglo XX, inicialmente de forma espontánea y no oficial, para conmemorar, una nueva identidad cultural, producto del encuentro y fusión entre los pueblos indígenas de América y los colonizadores españoles, además de la valorización del patrimonio cultural hispanoamericano. Aunque el nombre «Día de la Raza» es el más popular en la actualidad, el nombre oficial suele variar de un país a otro. En España es el Día de la Fiesta Nacional o Día de la Hispanidad, además de la fiesta religiosa de la Virgen del Pilar. En Estados Unidos es Columbus Day o Día de Cristóbal Colón, el Día del Encuentro de Dos Mundos en Chile y Perú; y Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural en Argentina. En Venezuela La celebración del Día de la Raza se incorporó mediante la Ley de Fiestas Nacionales de 1921. Reflections on Dia de La Hispanidad

So when we think of what’s known as “Columbus Day”, we encounter all kinds of problems about the meaning of a day like this. We know that it’s not a good thing to celebrate a marauding mercenary who “discovered” land that was already discovered many years ago.

 That kind of controversy is pretty obvious, and is currently under debate in the United States, where the Italian-American community chose to elevate Columbus as a historical figure to assert their own importance in society, following their own kind of discrimination against their immigrant identities. One could argue, however, that the violence experienced by indigenous peoples far outweighs the original hostility that met southern european immigrants coming through Ellis Island.

So when I read this article from KCL Latin American Society, I realized there were more layers to this experience, having to do with the experience of those who speak Spanish and English, seeing this day referred to in radically different contexts from various figures in their lives. Dia de la Raza is one way of renaming the day to favor indigenous peoples - La Raza, the race or the rooot - in a way that is less dependent on Europe, since the name “Dia de La Hispanidad” refers to the practice of speaking Spanish, the language originating from Spain.

However, in the United States, the act of speaking Spanish is implicitly died to an indigenous identity, and efforts to make our society a monolingual one, dependent on speaking English, can be seen as tied to a prejudice against native central and south americans who speak spanish as a matter of fact, so that would add some nuance to the conversation here.

Various movements and figures have taken varying approaches to renaming and this holiday and transforming it into something that uplifts the first peoples who came here. The article mentions several iterations, so I’ll just list them here:

 It was inspiring to see that the push to re-evaluate October 12 away from a colonial perspective and towards one that honors the indigenous experience had its origin in the radical politics of South America. This article brought up that the push was started by Evo Morales of Bolivia, a figure that I find inspiring because of his humility and dedication to all of his people, including the poorest. It is precisely this kind of mentality which differs from the appropriative arrogance of Columbus and the club of conquistadores that followed him.
