In a vacuum, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed climate change package is the sort of bold move that many environmentalists would ordinarily cheer because it aims to quickly ramp up California’s efforts to reduce planet-warming emissions.
But the governor’s climate push has received a lukewarm response that could jeopardize his ability to get the landmark plan approved at the state Capitol before legislators must adjourn for the year next Wednesday.
Many environmentalists and legislators are skeptical over what they see as two major strings attached to Newsom’s proposal: He wants to delay the closure of California’s last nuclear power plant and carve out a role for carbon-capture technology, which activists say could give industry a loophole to avoid cutting emissions.
Newsom also wants lawmakers to approve his ambitious proposals to require California to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, reduce emissions in all sectors and create safety zones around oil wells.
He rolled out a slate of major climate-related bills Aug. 12, declaring “later is too late” to act on the issue. Around the same time, Newsom unveiled a proposal to keep Diablo Canyon, the state’s last nuclear power plant, open five to 10 years longer to shore up the power supply.
RL Miller, president of Climate Hawks Vote, an environmental advocacy group, said while many activists are pleased to see Newsom champion climate legislation, they realize the timing is calculated.
“This is very much sweeteners for keeping Diablo open,” she said. “He’s prepared to give the environmentalists everything else that he thinks they want. It’s political expediency, I don’t know how else to put it.”
Newsom’s attempt to keep Diablo Canyon open has stirred opposition from environmentalists and Democratic legislators alike. In the state Assembly, progressives have floated an alternative, $3.7 billion plan that seeks to shore up the electrical grid by investing more in clean-energy sources and storage projects, as well as grants to make homes more energy efficient.
The governor’s push would undo a 2016 pact between legislators and then-Gov. Jerry Brown to close the nuclear plant by 2025, a deal struck with environmentalists and labor unions.
Newsom’s administration said extending the plant’s scheduled closure is “critical to ensure statewide energy system reliability” and avoid a repeat of August 2020, when the state had two nights of rolling blackouts.
His office said supply-chain problems and lengthy environmental reviews have delayed the construction of clean-energy systems. In other words, the state hasn’t built out its wind and solar grid as quickly as it had hoped when legislators agreed to close the nuclear plant about six years ago.
California gets about 8.6% of its power from Diablo Canyon, and 9.3% of its total electricity from nuclear sources, including power imported from other states. Renewable sources of power account for about 34% of the state’s power.
Newsom spokesman Anthony York said the governor’s climate proposals and his push to keep the nuclear plant open are “not formally linked.” But he said the efforts work in tandem because the state needs a mid-term source of clean energy to avoid relying on gas-fired power plants, particularly when soaring temperatures and wildfires strain the grid.
“Our primary concern is keeping the lights on,” he said. “Yes, we have to go faster (on clean, renewable energy). But we have a responsibility to ensure that all options are on the table.”
York said the plan from Assembly members to instead accelerate spending on renewable energy is “not a serious proposal.” He said Newsom believes the state needs to both keep Diablo Canyon open and double down on its efforts to build power systems.

The 2020 Tony Awards Preview | Broadway Direct
Like the recent Olympics, the 2020 Tony Awards arrive after a lengthy delay necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. And amid enduring uncertainty, they are all the more eagerly anticipated by fans of Broadway theater and the industry serving them.
This year’s ceremony, set for September 26 at the Winter Garden Theatre, will be different on several counts. The number of productions recognized has been limited by the March 2020 shutdown, which prevented a bunch of high-profile shows from opening, and rendered others — including Ivo von Hove’s staging of West Side Story, and Girl From the North Country, the acclaimed musical weaving Bob Dylan songs into a book by Conor McPherson — ineligible, as many Tony voters had not been able to see them.
On the other hand, a new arrangement that will make the entire event available on Paramount Plus, beginning at 7 p.m. ET — with longtime Tonys home CBS broadcasting from 9 to 11 p.m. ET — will enable viewers at home to see awards given out in categories such as design, orchestration, and choreography. “We haven’t had all of our creatives and the awards recognizing them on the special since before my time,” notes Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, which presents the Tonys with the American Theatre Wing.
“The whole point of the show is to set an optimistic and realistic tone,” adds Heather Hitchens, the Wing’s president and CEO. “The theme of this show is that Broadway’s back — theater is safe if protocols are followed — and we have exciting new work for people to see.”
Both St. Martin and Hitchens point to the diversity of shows represented both in nominations for the 2019–2020 season as well as those premiering in the new season, which launched in August with the arrival of Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s Pass Over. Slave Play, another work by a Black playwright that transferred after earning praise Off-Broadway, is up for 12 Tonys, making it the most nominated play to date. Author Jeremy O. Harris was tapped for his provocative look at the roles race, gender, and sexuality play in contemporary relationships; director Robert O’Hara, leading actress Joaquina Kalukango, featured actors Ato Blankson-Wood and James Cusati-Moyer, and featured actresses Chalia La Tour and Annie McNamara are among the other nominees.
Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is also a contender in 12 categories, with celebrated Black artists including Adrienne Warren, who won raves for her performance as the titular rock and R&B icon, and this year’s Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Katori Hall among the nominees. The other productions up for Best Musical, Jagged Little Pill and Moulin Rouge! The Musical respectively collected 15 and 14 nominations; both combine books by noted writers — Jagged Little Pill’s Diablo Cody and Moulin Rouge’s John Logan — with established music — Alanis Morissette’s for Jagged Little Pill, and various pop songs tracing several decades for Moulin Rouge!.
Consequently, none of the five candidates for best original score is a musical production. They include Slave Play and fellow Best Play nominees The Inheritance and The Sound Inside and new stagings of A Christmas Carol and Tennessee Williams’s The Rose Tattoo. (The theatrical concert David Byrne’s American Utopia is being honored with a Special Tony Award, as Springsteen on Broadway was in 2018.)
Only three revivals made the cut for Best Revival of a Play: a production of A Soldier’s Play showcasing Blair Underwood, a nominee for leading actor in a play, and David Alan Grier, up for featured actor; a Betrayal, featuring Tom Hiddleston, a contender for leading actor; and Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune, starring six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, nominated for leading actress.
Other stage and screen stars who are candidates at this year’s ceremony include Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge, both for leading actor in Best Play nominee Sea Wall/A Life, a pair of one-man pieces respectively written by Simon Stephens and Nick Payne, each told from the perspective of a young husband and father. In the category for leading actress in a play, Mary-Louise Parker is acknowledged for Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside, an intimate mystery involving a cancer-stricken college professor and her alienated, prodigious student, also up for Best Play; and Laura Linney is nominated for My Name Is Lucy Barton, an adaptation of Alice Munro’s novel tracing a complex mother-daughter relationship.
Matthew López’s The Inheritance — up for 11 awards, and focused on gay men living in a New York haunted by a pandemic of the recent past, AIDS — yielded nominations for John Benjamin Hickey, for featured actor, and Lois Smith, for featured actress. (Cast members Andrew Burnap and Paul Hilton are nominees for leading and featured actor in turn, with Linda Vista’s Ian Barford also up for leading actor.) And a fifth Best Play contender, Grand Horizons — a comedy that dares to look at sex and marriage in the golden years — and the Broadway debut of Bess Wohl earned a nod for another duly cherished veteran, Jane Alexander, also for featured actress.
Musical theater favorites recognized include Danny Burstein, who earned a seventh Tony nomination for his featured performance in Moulin Rouge; Moulin Rouge’s Karen Olivo and Jagged Little Pill’s Elizabeth Stanley, completing the leading actress category; and Moulin Rouge’s Aaron Tveit, who, as a result of the relative dearth of musical productions in this abbreviated season, was the only performer nominated in the leading actor field. (He needs the approval of 60 percent of Tony voters to claim the prize.)
In vying for Best Direction of a Play, Slave Play’s O’Hara will face stiffer competition from lauded British directors Stephen Daldry (Inheritance) and Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal) and equally accomplished Americans David Cromer (Sound Inside) and Kenny Leon (Soldier’s Play). The directors tapped for their work on musicals are no less distinguished: British film and stage vet Phyllida Lloyd (TINA), Pill’s Diane Paulus, and Moulin Rouge’s Alex Timbers, who, between the two of them, have helmed some of the most admired musical productions of the past decade both on and Off-Broadway.
And thanks to this year’s multiplatform format, fans of the three musicals will get to see awards handed out to their choreographers and orchestrators — one of each, anyway. The nominees include Moulin Rouge’s Sonya Tayeh, whose collaborators have ranged from the Martha Graham Dance Company to Miley Cyrus, and Jagged Little Pill’s Tom Kitt, whose many credits as a composer include Next to Normal, for which he won both Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize.
Variety writer and podcast host Gordon Cox adds that the 2020 Tony nominations would likely have presented “an entirely different race” had the rush of productions originally scheduled to open in late March and April of last year had been able to do so. Still, he believes there are “a significant group of people who think the Tonys can be a celebration, not just of a season that got overshadowed by the pandemic, but of a return to performances — to being able to sit in theatres, knock on wood. There are people looking for an opportunity to celebrate theater in general.”

Best 2012 games
10. Plague Inc
Tumblr media
Man, remember 2012? Even in 2012 I thought that a game revolving around mutating a virus and trying to make it spread as much as possible was a little iffy at best. The game’s stance was pretty neutral at least; it wasn’t trying to make it seem cool or glorious, or pushing an ideal or agenda. Anyway, it was a weird, neat little game.  Ugh.
9.  Cave Story
Tumblr media
It’s a cute little metroidvania game I had a good time with and didn’t think about too much. When I read about Cave Story, my respect grew for the game quite a bit. It was made by one person in his spare time over several years, and had a pretty big influence in the world of indie games.
8. Sleeping Dogs
Tumblr media
I’ve only dabbled with this one so far, but I liked what I saw a lot. It’s in the queue with a bunch of Yakuza games for me to get to. Putting it on the list might seem like a goof, but the oversight committee’s funding ran out in 2018 so it’s just me here in this room clacking away at the keys and shotgunning coffee.
7. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Tumblr media
This game felt like a single player MMO, like an offline WoW - but in a good way? It’s generic hack and slash fantasy, mindless fun. Curt Schilling sure seems like a big asshole though. This game is getting rereleased in a few weeks and I do not understand why. Maybe the proceeds are going to the Rhode Island state government.
6. Telltale’s The Walking Dead
Tumblr media
Again, 2012 feels like a lot more than 8 years ago. The Walking Dead is the game that really spurred Telltale Studios into quickly growing then collapsing; they took on too many projects that were too similar and too expensive in too short a time. I’m reminded of how the Tony Hawk or Guitar Hero franchises were similarly driven into the ground. Only Telltale doesn’t have the resources to absorb that financial loss. It’s a shame for all the people who worked there. Their games. when they did, were something special. As for The Walking Dead, it was almost too good. I was captivated by the first few episodes, but the resolution of episode three made me feel ill in the same way the Sander Coen passage of BioShock did.
5. Torchlight II
Tumblr media
The internet says this released in the same year as Diablo III and my brain cannot process that. I played them both a lot, but my timeline is ruined. Anyway, Torchlight II is a good mindless action RPG that felt different enough from Diablo that there’s room for both. It’s more lighthearted which isn’t better but it is welcome. Torchlight III is in early access right now, y’all.
4. FTL: Faster Than Light
Tumblr media
Well, I think we’re officially here. 8 years ago, this is the point where every blurb I write about these games is just me wiping drool from my chin and going Now I remember FTL you see there WAS no internet in those days of course and Bill Clinton was the president and you know how there’s Hillary Clinton? Well she married Bill and this was before I met your mother we had four cats named Bear and Socks because the grey one had white feet that LOOKED LIKE HE WAS WEARING SOCKS.
Anyway, whoever had 2012 in the office pool, go collect your winnings. Might be able to arguably split with whoever had late 2020 for when I go around the fucking bend.
3. Fez
Tumblr media
Fez is an incredibly charming and inventive game. It reminds me of Return of the Obra Dinn in that I love it, but I’m just not smart enough for it. Or the wrong kind of smart. The wrong kind of dumb. The game’s map and travel system - where each new zone seems to lead to 2 other new zones - creates an unreasonable anxiety within me. It’s a world I cannot catalogue and keep straight. The game is a 2D platformer, but you can rotate the world 90 degrees like a cube. The game requires spatial reasoning which is another tough one for me. Plus, I’m led to believe that the creator is an asshole. Fez is undeniably beautiful though.
2. Diablo III
Tumblr media
Diablo III was a strange journey for me. I was absolutely in love with it right away. I tried all of the characters and played through the story with each. That enthusiasm eventually disappeared though, because all there was to do was play through the story again and again with increased difficulty settings, and on the hardest setting (Inferno) the game was soul-crushingly difficult. I remember finally getting into act II and being wholly unable to advance. Once I had that experience with one character, I stopped playing the game altogether; if that’s where this road leads, I’m not doing this again.
Thanks to the reworking of the endgame with Adventure Mode and rift runs, Diablo III became one of my favorite games.
1. Journey
Tumblr media
I’ve already written quite a bit about Journey, so let it suffice to say that it’s a unique experience that I’ll cherish always, and one of my favorite games ever.

There is also the term extras that are used as minor characters with few roles in the film. This differs from the main actors, who have larger and more roles. As an actor and actress, good acting talent must be required that corresponds to the subject of the film in which he plays the leading role. In certain scenes, the role of the actor can be replaced by a stunt man or a stunt man. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors who play difficult and extreme scenes that are usually found in action-action films. Movies can also be used to deliver certain messages from the filmmaker. Some industries also use film to convey and represent their symbols and culture. Filmmaking is also a form of expression, thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings and moods of a person that are visualized in the film. The film itself is mostly fictional, though some are based on actual stories or on a true story. There are also documentaries with original and real images or biographical films that tell the story of a character. There are many other popular genre films, from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. This is some information about the definition of film or film. The information has been cited from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful. ❍❍❍ TV FILM ❍❍❍ The first television shows were experimental, sporadic programs that from the 1930s could only be seen at a very short distance from the mast. TV events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the crowning of King George VI. In Britain in 19340 and the famous launch of David Sarnoff at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the United States, the medium grew, but World War II brought development to a halt after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television, and in 1948 the popular Texaco Star Theater radio moved to become the first weekly television variety show that hosted Milton Berle and earned the name “Mr Television” demonstrated The medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment that could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the United States took place on September 4, 1951, when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco on AT & T’s transcontinental cable and microwave relay system was broadcasting to broadcasters in local markets has been. The first national color show (the 1954 Rose Parade tournament) in the United States took place on January 1, 1954. For the next ten years, most network broadcasts and almost all local broadcasts continued to be broadcast in black and white. A color transition was announced for autumn 1965, in which more than half of all network prime time programs were broadcast in color. The first all-color peak season came just a year later. In 19402, the last holdout of daytime network shows was converted to the first full color network season. ❍❍❍ formats and genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres TV shows are more diverse than most other media due to the variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show can be fictional (as in comedies and dramas) or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It can be current (as in the case of a local news program and some television films) or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional films). They can be educational or educational in the first place, or entertaining, as is the case with situation comedies and game shows. [Citation required] A drama program usually consists of a series of actors who play characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (with the exception of soap opera series) generally remained static without storylines, and the main characters and premise barely changed. [Citation required] If the characters’ lives changed a bit during the episode, it was usually reversed in the end. For this reason, the episodes can be broadcast in any order. [Citation required] Since the 1980s, many FILMS have had a progressive change in the plot, characters, or both. For example, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television films to have this kind of dramatic structure [4] [better source required], while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further illustrated such a structure had a predetermined story about the planned five season run. [Citation required] In 2019, it was reported that television became a larger part of the revenue of large media companies than the film. Some also noticed the quality improvement of some television programs. In 2019, Oscar-winning film director Steven Soderbergh declared the ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative: “I think these qualities are now being seen on television and people who want to see stories with such qualities are watching TV. ❍❍❍ Thanks for everything and have fun watching❍❍❍ Here you will find all the films that you can stream online, including the films that were shown this week. The Top Music Publishers Of 2021 Ranked By Global Revenue
An Overlooked Tracks News Finding: Here’s an article you might have overlooked. Having a partnership with NewsAPI, we try to catch music entertainment news for you to view, read and possibly enjoy. We will continue to find what’s available in the world of music entertainment, concert information and music releases. But obviously you – the listener and reader are the biggest source for news in your area, so if you can share with us. For right now, look at what we found for you:
“From The Billboard Magazine Website – The Top Music Publishers Of 2021 Ranked By Global Revenue”
The music publishing industry was defined by a series of mega deals in 2021, including the sales of song catalogs by such superstars as Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Def Leppard. The majors made the lion’s share of these acquisitions, but indies such as Merck Mercuriadis’ Hipgnosis and Larry Mestel’s Primary Wave were also very much in the game. Here’s how a dozen top publishers stacked up in terms of revenue last year, as well as a look at their progress in 2022.
The Top Music Publishers Of 2021 Ranked By Global Revenue
Music 1. Jon Platt  Chairman/CEO, Sony Music Publishing
Global revenue: $1.726B
Music publishing’s goliath rebranded from Sony/ATV to Sony Music Publishing and brokered deals with hot new talent — Olivia Rodrigo, The Kid LAROI and Kane Brown — while also scoring wins with some of Sony’s top legacy talent. SMP signed AC/DC, bought Bruce Springsteen’s masters and publishing in conjunction with Sony Music Entertainment for an estimated $500 million and acquired Paul Simon’s entire song catalog. ASCAP and BMI crowned SMP’s Nashville division country publisher of the year for the first time since 2021.
2022 momentum: Sony led Billboard’s first-quarter Publishers Quarterly on both the Hot 100 and Radio Airplay charts, with 22.65% and 24.67% market shares, respectively. In the latter category, the music publisher has been No. 1 in 37 out of the last 39 quarters. And SMP’s $465.03 million fiscal fourth-quarter revenue for the period ended March 31 represented a 14% increase from the corresponding period a year earlier when revenue was $408.2 million. Its total revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31 was $1.784 billion.
Music 2. Jody Gerson  Chairman/CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group
Global revenue: $1.59B
UMPG’s aggressive dealmaking has narrowed the gap between it and Sony Music Publishing over the last seven years, and after closing 2020 with a deal to acquire Bob Dylan’s 60-year, 600-song catalog maintained its momentum in 2021 through deals with Lionel Richie, Clairo, Louis Bell and Julia Michaels. The publisher also extended its deal with Harry Styles and sealed licensing deals with TikTok and Triller.
2022 momentum: UMPG reached a deal with The Weeknd to take over administration of his highly lucrative song catalog once his deal with Kobalt expires. In the first quarter, the music publisher finished No. 2 on both the Hot 100 and Radio Airplay rankings with 20.40% and 21.74% of the market, respectively.
Music 3. Guy Moot  Co-chair/CEO, Warner Chappell Music  Carianne Marshall  Co-chair/COO, Warner Chappell Music
Global revenue: $817.0M
Warner Chappell upped its game in 2021 with acquisitions of David Bowie’s publishing catalog, renewal deals with Madonna and the estate of George Michael, and new deals with Cardi B, Anderson .Paak and Daniel Caesar. It also promoted Ryan Press to president of North America.
2022 momentum: The company finished at No. 3 on the Hot 100 publishers ranking, with a 14.99% market share in the first quarter, but dropped to No. 4 behind Kobalt on the Radio Airplay ranking with 15.51% of the market. Warner Chappell also signed up-and-coming Mexican singer-songwriter Natanael Cano (“Soy El Diablo”) to a worldwide publishing deal.
Music 4. Merck Mercuriadis Founder/CEO, Hipgnosis Song Management/Hipgnosis Songs Fund/Hipgnosis Songs Capital
Estimated global revenue: $161M
After a $1 billion spending spree in the first six months of 2021 that included the publishing catalogs of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, music publishing’s provocateur spent the second half orchestrating a $1-billion investment partnership with Blackstone.
2022 momentum: Signed a worldwide publishing deal with R&B star Normani and, in the first quarter, finished at No. 6 on the Radio Airplay publishers ranking with 3.28% and at No. 7 on the Hot 100 ranking with 3.23%.
Music 5. Larry Mestel  Founder/CEO/president of music publishing, Primary Wave Music
Estimated global revenue: $161M
According to Mestel, Primary Wave raised the value of its assets to $2 billion through deals with the estates of James Brown and Bing Crosby, Chris Isaak and Sun Records. The company also owns a major chunk of the Prince estate.
2022 momentum: Primary Wave expanded its stakes in Def Leppard’s publishing and recording royalty income from some of its biggest hits, including “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Rock of Ages,” and acquired key rights from Bob Dylan’s share of the Traveling Wilburys catalog, including master royalties and neighboring rights royalties from the group’s output. But a Minnesota judge rejected the company’s proposal that Prince’s assets be placed in a single holding company in which all heirs would be shareholders.

Really dumb, probably out of no where question, but how old is everyone in Fallen Hero?
I am in a hurry, so here is the non-proofread timeline for the game, with everyone’s ages (and a lot of other stuff)
History of the Fallen Hero earth.
1945: World War II ends, but the technological arms race continues. The United States and the Soviet Union both 'recruit' available German and Japanese scientists, taking full advantage of what they learned from the more unconscionable experiments during the war.
1951: The Korean War very nearly turns nuclear when the first Chinese Type 52 bipedal tanks help push the UN-forces out of the mountains and nearly out of the country. Though clumsy and slow, they prove to be useful in the mountainous terrain, leading to an upswing in the powered armor industry.
1955: The Soviet Union announces that they have successfully created the first functional, cybernetic limb replacement. This is widely considered as the start of the Cyber Race.
1957: The Soviet Union manages to successfully interface man and machine, leading to a quantum leap in power armor technology as bipedal movement patterns become a lot more organic.
1960's: The US repeatedly release new versions of their powered armor suits as the Vietnam war rages, the lighter, more maneuverable armors being a lot more suitable for the terrain. Various upgrades for soldiers are becoming more and more common, and the nickname 'Mods' is coined for those changed by the cybernetic implants.
1968: The first so-called 'Masked Heroes' appear in public, modded veterans from the Vietnam war angered by their treatment by government of society. Very soon afterwards, new villains also takes to the stage, and the police finds it increasingly difficult to deal with disturbed people with military training and equipment.
1971: A metabolic diet pill launched without proper product testing turns out to have uncommon and dangerous side effect. Though most users die or are crippled, a certain lucky few develop powers hitherto unseen in man. The pill is quickly nicknamed the 'Hero Drug' and though it is pulled off the market, use and research continues. People who have gained powers are nicknamed 'Boosts' in the media.
1976: The Hero Drug is declared an illegal narcotic, banned after causing the deaths of untold thousands of people. Still, the lure is too strong, and research moves underground and behind securely locked corporate doors.
1979: Steel is born.
1980: The Year of Hell. The Big One hits the West Coast, the San Andreas fault causes a massive earthquake to strike Los Angeles, which triggers the Cascadia subduction zone a few days later. The massive earthquake and resulting tsunami throws the whole west coast into disarray with more than 150 000 estimated dead and missing. As if this was not enough, three months later the Mammoth Lake volcanic system reawakens, and the resulting eruption destroys any hope of quickly salvaging the west.
1981: The US government is nearly paralyzed by refugees as well as the rain of ash covering most of the Midwest. President Clark declares martial law.
1982: Ortega is born.
1980s: Aftershocks ravage the west coast, halting any rebuilding effort. Little by little rebuilding turns to evacuation, all efforts being put into getting the Midwest back on its feet to regain a stable food supply. Food Riots are common and several armed uprisings against the increasingly authoritarian government are struck down by the military.
1984: Los Angeles is renamed 'Los Diablos' in a famous documentary; 'The Angels of Los Diablos' about the rescue efforts.
1986: The GeniTech corporation patents the creation of lab-grown stem cell organs, revolutionizing transplant industry.
Late 80s: Estimated birth of the MC.
Early 90s: Fed up with the increasingly suffocating yoke of the federal government, more and more people start moving back into the ruins of the west, starting the recolonization. A disproportionate amount of these people are enhanced heroes and villains, both modded and boosts fleeing government control.
1992: In an effort to increase private industry investments, the West Coast is declare a free economic zone, where there will only be the most minimal of federal government oversight. No taxes. No regulations.
1992: The GeniTech corporation patents whole-body stem cell clones, allowing for large scale harvesting of replacement organs. Following a tumultuous debate about the ethics involved, they are one of the first companies that moves their corporate headquarters to Los Diablos to escape regulation.
1993: The Re-Gene project is first revealed in a NYT article, claiming it dates back to the seventies with the goal of making androids for use in war. The author, Tim Mazetti, was killed in a traffic accident soon afterwards. Lady Argent is born.
1996: The city of Los Diablos is up and running, the first Mayor is elected, and it is starting to look more and more like a functional city. With the huge changes to the coastline, large tracts of South Bay are abandoned and the city shuffles inland. Herald is born.
1997: Appalled at the lack of law and order in the free economic zone, or the FEZ as people call it, the newly elected President Ross creates the Marshal system. Recruiting some of the most famous masked heroes of the region, he funds the 'Rangers' initiative in order to stem the worst excesses of the enhanced populace.
1999: A breakthrough in energy technology leads to the first plasma reactors, leading to ever more compact cybernetics. Ortega becomes a mod. Hollow Ground declares themselves the kingpin of Los Diablos.
2000: The increasingly recovering US is flexing its muscles in the middle east, leading to a series of proxy wars with the ailing Soviet Union. The first known sighting of a Re-Gene on the battlefield. Ortega debuts as Charge.
2002: Ortega joins the Rangers.
2004: A huge scandal rocks the Re-Gene project after their operatives are suspected of human rights abuses in another proxy war in Panama. It is never brought to court as the Re-Genes themselves are androids with artificial minds, but the scandal moves the project back underground where it remains ever since.
2005: The Special Directive is formed, rumored to be a black-ops strike team of Re-Genes, deployed against anyone deemed dangerous enough by the government.
2007: Ortega is promoted to Marshal after the death of Marshal Hood at the hands of Hollow Ground.
2008: Sidestep debuts as a vigilante.
2011: The Nanosurge hits Los Diablos, a runaway nano-weapon devouring all flesh before it is contained by an alliance of heroes led by the Rangers. Sidestep plays a vital part in its defeat.
2013: The Heartbreak incident. Sidestep and Anathema are believed killed. Ortega retires as Marshal and hero, replaced by Steel.
2014: Ortega returns from retirement, joining the Rangers once more as Charge.
2017: MC returns to Los Diablos under an assumed identity.
2020: Now.

In essence, what endears romantic comedies to their most ardent supporters also is what bothers a lot of critics. Rom-coms, on the whole, are formulaic fantasies about everyday people who behave unrealistically in exceptional (and exceptionally well-lit) situations. The films usually adhere to a simplistic three-act structure that hinges on the viewer's emotional catharsis. The lovebirds meet and get to know each other in a montage scored to an upbeat pop song; clash, separate, and miss each other in a montage scored to a melancholy pop song; and ultimately reunite, with a coda scored to a cathartic pop song.
In Long Shot, the upbeat song is Blondie's "One Way or Another," the melancholy song is Roxette's "It Must Have Been Love" from the Pretty Woman soundtrack, and the cathartic song is Robyn's "Dancing on My Own," which is odd, given that the couple ends up together. By the way, given the genre, that's not a spoiler.
Pedestrian song choices aside, Long Shot is hit-and-miss. What works about it also is what works in all the good rom-coms: fundamentally, it's a story about two likable people putting in the time and effort to understand each other. As critic Wesley Morris wrote in a recent New York Times Magazine article about the dearth of modern rom-coms and why that's unfortunate: "Romantic comedy is the only genre committed to letting relatively ordinary people—no capes, no spaceships, no infinite sequels—figure out how to deal meaningfully with another human being." It's a fair point, and one that explains why Long Shot warrants a fair shake.
The more ordinary half of this movie's duo is a Brooklyn-based reporter named Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen, playing the raunchy/cuddly version of himself that he honed in Knocked Up and perfected in This Is the End). The object of Fred's affection is Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), who was Fred's babysitter when she was 16 and he was 13. Now, Charlotte is the U.S. secretary of state—celebrated, of course, for being the youngest and hottest person to hold the office—and she plans to run for president in 2020.
Like Harry and Sally, Edward and Vivian, Joe and Kathleen, and other exalted rom-com pairs, Fred and Charlotte represent a case of supposed opposites attracting. Fred, who writes for a local rag that evokes a mash-up of Vice and the Village Voice, is brash, unkempt, judgmental, and uncompromising. Charlotte, in her ambitious quest to actually save the world while climbing a slippery political ladder, is tactful, chic, open-minded, and persuadable. These two are idealistic humanitarians at heart; they bonded in adolescence over how deeply they cared about issues that most Americans ignored, like recycling and global warming. When they bump into each other as adults at a Manhattan charity event, one can almost see their kindred sparks. Obviously, it is unlikely that a guy who looks and acts like Rogen's character would enchant Theron's—and even more unlikely that she would hire him to punch up her speeches after watching him pillory a media mogul and then nosedive down a staircase. But common sense matters little in the pursuit of feel-good, against-all-odds, shoot-for-the-stars romance.
Director Jonathan Levine, who previously teamed with Rogen on 50/50 and The Night Before, works some glimmers of political satire and ribaldry into Long Shot's cavalcade of tropes. Many of the jokes are weak, eliciting light chuckles if anything; but the few knee-slappers that emerge from the film's most outrageous situations will likely be the moments for which Long Shot is best remembered, like when Charlotte negotiates the release of a hostage while high on MDMA.
Long Shot's strongest asset, though—which, upon reflection, also exposes the movie's greatest flaw—is Theron. For years she has excelled at dark comedy, evidenced by her prickly turns in the Jason Reitman-Diablo Cody films Young Adult and Tully, not to mention her off-kilter guest spot on Arrested Development. She's funny here, but only when the script gives her some edge to chew on, which doesn't happen enough.
Many critics have already categorized Long Shot as more like Veep meets Notting Hill than The American President. I, however, longed for Charlotte to be as acerbic, outré, and uproarious as Veep's Selina Meyer. I also bristled at Long Shot's conclusion: that the woman has to change for her man while he basically stays the same. (I guess he learned how to be less judgmental, or at least that's what the screenwriters want me to think.) In one of several explanation-laden scenes, Fred's best friend (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) tells him that he judges people too much in the name of white-knight liberalism. Meanwhile, Charlotte jeopardizes what she has wanted and worked for her entire life in the name of integrity, but also to publicly endorse and hold on to her man. It's a huge sacrifice that Fred does not reciprocate; but they're cute together, so the outcome is less offensive than it is disappointing.
Still, the movie ticks its post-Trump, post-MeToo feminist boxes in other ways, like showing how Charlotte and her advisers' concern with optics is justified. As a woman in politics, Charlotte knows full well that the general public will view her anger as hysterics, her assertiveness as bitchiness, and any misstep as more damning than one made by a man. Cowriters Dan Sterling (The Interview) and Liz Hannah (The Post) handle this material and the romantic side of Charlotte and Fred's relationship best, though neither element is as daring or clever as it could have been.
But here's the thing: rom-coms, probably more than films of any other genre, are supposed to be vehicles for escapism. Rom-com fans rely on them for this, too, especially when the current climate—both the political and literal—is inflamed. Ergo, Long Shot accomplishes what any decent romantic comedy sets out to do: induce some laughs, awwws, and sighs of relief at a tidy, happy ending.
