Kermis Zijtaart staat bol van de activiteiten! Twee jaar was er geen kermis in Zijtaart, maar nu mag het weer. Van vrijdag 20 tot en met maandag 23 mei is er vier dagen lang plezier voor jong en oud. Met de komst van diverse leuke kermisattracties en diverse nevenactiviteiten belooft de kermis weer een gezellig evenement te worden. Op vrijdagavond begint de kermis om 19.00 uur met een traktatie. De kinderen en de jeugd (niet alleen uit Zijtaart) krijgen een gratis kaartje voor een van de attracties. Voor de ouders en andere bezoekers is er gratis koffie en thee. Voor het gratis kaartje is het wel de bedoeling dat men ook om 19.00 uur aanwezig is. Dan is er om 19.30 uur het eerste Zijtaarts kampioenschap bierdopjes rijgen, dit vooruitlopend op de recordpoging op zondag 3 juli a.s. Op zaterdag en maandag gaat de kermis om 14.00 uur open en op zondag om 12.00 uur. Maandagavond heeft de EGZ evenementen groep Zijtaart clown Ronnie Ballonnie uitgenodigd om van 18.00 tot 19.30 uur de kinderen te vermaken. Tijdens de kermisdagen staat er nog meer op het programma. Op zaterdagmiddag is er de fietscross voor de kinderen van de basisschool. Op zondag is er in het centrum vanaf 10.00 uur de vlooienmarkt van carnavalsvereniging De Reigers. Tijdens de kermisdagen zijn ook De Reiger Horeca en café-zaal Kleijngeld open en is daar op culinair en muzikaal gebied het een en ander te beleven. Met deze activiteiten heeft Zijtaart gegarandeerd weer een super gezellige kermis. Darfur prices soar as 3,000 flee violence in Chad

Displaced people in Kalma, Dereig, El Salam, and Otash camps for the displaced in Nyala in South Darfur have complained about the shortage of water and the soaring price of public transportation. The Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) in North Darfur confirmed the registration of 3,000 people who fled the recent intercommunal violence in East Chad to North Darfur.

Composting in LA isn’t as easy as it sounds

The roughly 150 residents who have signed up to bring compost to this garden dump their food scraps into bin number one. Once that fills, volunteers transfer all 1,200 pounds of rotting food into bin number two.

To get involved, simply sign up on Compost LA’s website, enter a zip code, and they’ll email information for the nearest hub that’s accepting food scraps from new residents.

However, only eight out of LA Compost’s 32 hubs are taking new people. The rest are closed to the public or at capacity. For West LA residents, the closest option is in downtown.

Dereig says it’s been a challenge to keep up with growing demand: “Unfortunately there are times when the bin reaches capacity, and unfortunately we have to turn some folks away.”

Demand is high because a lot of cities in LA County don’t accept compost. Most of them have green bins, but the rules about what goes in those bins changes across city borders.

For example, Burbank will only accept stuff from your backyard, like dead leaves, branches and grass trimmings. Los Angeles will accept whole foods, like the moldy orange you never got around to eating, but not the orange peels.

It’s much more complicated than in Northern and Central California. Alameda, for example, accepts compost countywide.

“LA County is more densely populated, and so the locations and farms that use the compost generated from our organic waste are farther out. It costs more to ship it to that location,” says Coby Skye, who oversees the environmental program at LA Public Works.

And building a composting facility in LA County comes with its own challenges.
