High on the Fumes

“Straying a bit far from the nest, Dickiebird,” Jason says. He’s got one hand shoving his mask back up into his hood, revealing just his mouth and the sharp line of his jaw, while the other digs in the pocket of his leather jacket, fishing for cigarettes. A beaten-up carton gets waved in Dick’s general direction, offering a cigarette Dick never accepts. Not like this. Not in the Nightwing suit, at least.

They’re currently overlooking Crime Alley, seated on the edge of the roof, legs dangling off the side. Jason hadn’t seemed surprised when Dick had dropped down next to him on the ledge. But Red Hood wouldn’t be Red Hood if Jason didn’t know the coming and goings of the various vigilantes creeping on Gotham's rooftops at night.

“Ran out of bad guys my side of the pond,” Dick says in the easy way he says lots of things. The patented Grayson charm. “What can I say—I’m just that good.”

That actually pulls a laugh out of Jason. A genuine one. One that has his mouth stretched apart in a smile that makes Dick think beautiful.

“No criminals in Blüdhaven. I knew moonlighting as a police officer would be bad for you. Six months on the job and they’ve already got you on their payroll.”

“Thought you’d be proud of me for lasting as long as I did.”

“Sure thing, Princess.” There’s a fancy Zippo in his hand now, one Dick has never seen before, lighting the first cigarette of plenty to come. Dick wonders if Jason lifted it off some crook he left for dead. “You probably broke some departmental records. Most Blüdhaven cops are on the take before they’ve even stepped off Academy grounds.”

Dick chuckles the way you chuckle when watching your own house burn down to ashes, all your mortal possessions still inside. Blüdhaven is a corrupt cesspool with no fast and easy fix. Maybe not even a slow and difficult one—and she’s all Dick's. He stuffs the thought somewhere deep and hidden and eagerly shifts his eyes to Jason so he can forget. Just for a while.

It’s hard to read Jason’s face, hidden in the shadows of his hood, but the body language is clear; no apparent stiffness or major sore spots. Jason looks relaxed, if not a little tired, fingers nimble when they lift the cigarette to his lips. So the bloodstains aren’t his own.

“Slow night?”

Jason shrugs. “Petty criminals, mostly.” His lips tighten into a harsh line. “Some creep who thought he could set up shop and play pimp. Fuck that. My girls work for themselves.”

His girls. And that, Dick thinks, is the difference between Bruce and Jason. Bruce has his villains, his meta humans, and when that well runs dry there’s the League. A galaxy full of nemeses for him to fight. Big players and even bigger stakes. Abstract concepts of freedom and peace, and the liberty of dealing in absolutes. Jason has his people. The concrete reality of kids not being cornered by predators and sex workers keeping money in their own pockets. And his people love him. Prefer the Red Hood taking an iron pipe to the face of their abusive ex-husband, their kid’s drug dealer, or the rapist next-door, to the untouchable Bat Symbol high up in the sky.

Maybe Dick’s been staring too hard or maybe Jason can tell he’s thinking of Bruce because the next time he speaks, he’s extra crass: “I need a cock so far up my ass I’ll be seeing stars, a good meal, and a shower with better water pressure than the usual geriatric-taking-their-midnight-piss nonsense that’s rife this side of the city.” He sucks long and hard on the cigarette, posture thoughtful, before releasing the smoke in a slow exhale. “Not necessarily in that order.”

Dick snorts. Maybe there’s more than just the one big difference. “That really something you wanna yell off the rooftops? Thought you were some big bad crime lord.”

“The fuck's that s'posed to mean, Big Bird?” Some might assume that toting around eight severed heads in a duffle bag once would make it hard to take the moral high ground on anything. Dick knows for a fact that Jason doesn’t really give a shit about either morals or the high ground but it doesn’t stop him from taking both and making them his bitch. “Think I’m weak for taking it up the ass? How ‘bout you dial back on the homophobia, you bigoted prick.”

It might be more impressive if Dick was a little less familiar with Jason and his rage. Jason doesn’t settle his actual grievances with his words. This is foreplay.

“Wouldn’t dream of it, Little Wing. Got the best thighs this side of the equator. Ain’t nobody calling you weak, babe.”

“Don’t you forget it, asshole.”

Dick hums, lowering himself onto his back, arms stretched high above his head. There’s a weird serenity to being verbally abused by Jason as the Eastern sky is starting to brighten. The sound from the street feels distant and Jason feels so close, their thighs mere inches apart. When Dick lets his head rest on his arm, Jason’s broad shoulders fill up half his vision and he knows if he buries his nose between his shoulder blades it’ll smell of leather and smoke and sweat.

Jason twists his torso towards him. “Were you even listening, Fingerstripes? Just told you I want a cock up my ass before the night is through. Need me to grab a pen and a piece of paper and spell it out for you?” Jason gives a depreciating grunt. “And Daddy dares to say that you’re the smart one.”

“Jesus, Hood,” Dick teases. “Can’t tell if you’re trying to go for seductive or insulting.”

“Shows how shit your instincts are. I’m doing both. You turned on yet?”

Dick shrugs good-naturedly, arches his back and gives Jason the Grayson smile, blinding, crooked, winning. “Little bit.”

There’s another laugh, another smile. Another beautiful in Dick’s head. Then Jason’s lying down beside him, shoulders brushing, and voice bleeding a warm: “thought you would be, you big slut.”

When Jason finishes his cigarette he kills what’s left of it on the concrete. Wordlessly lights another. The new Zippo burns big and bright.

Dick lowers one arm, carefully drags his fingers across the busted knuckles of the hand holding the lighter. Sometimes, those hands will leave red streaks on Dick’s skin and Dick won’t know if the person it came from is still a person at all. And he thinks Jason painting him with blood should probably bother him more than it does. But it’s hard sometimes, between the night job and the day job and the things he sees during both. Between Bruce, who puts principles before people, and Jason, who puts people before Bruce, is Dick, who doesn’t want to choose between either, who wants to have both—but let’s Jason mark him up with the blood from Gotham’s criminals, anyway. So, maybe he’s made his choice.

"Make me a coffee tomorrow morning," Dick says, Jason's hand warm beneath his own. "With those fancy beans. From that specialty shop where they roast and grind the beans on the spot and you watch them like a hawk 'cause you're both anal and a snob."

"Just the coffee?"

"Just the coffee."

"You're one cheap fucking lay, Boy Blunder."

“Only for you,” Dick says. "The Bat family discount.” Dick wonders if there’s a little something special in those cigarettes when that doesn’t get him punted off the roof immediately. The vicious elbow stab to the gut seems rather mellow.

“Asshole,” Jason murmurs under his breath. The vitriol dripping off that single word makes Dick honest-to-God giggle, chest feeling light like flying.

He thinks they’ll stay here a little longer. Maybe one or two more cigarettes—all Jason. Dick will smoke after. After the sex, and the shower and the sleeping and the coffee. Long after the morning is gone. When Dick has been stripped of his suit for hours and Jason the same for his mask and guns. Then Dick will sit naked in the afternoon sun on Jason’s windowsill, grab that Zippo and smoke.

One cigarette. Just then.

Mystrade wip - Five Fights (1)

I'm thinking of writing a Five Things fic based around @duchesscloverly 's mystrade fight gifs. Probably only a short thing, but let me know if you want me to be tagged when I post.

“You can't do that!” Gregory says loudly. He stands in the doorway of Mycroft's bland office at the Ministry of Transport, hands tense but fingers spread wide in frustration. He grits his teeth and sucks in a breath, and then closes the door quietly behind him.

Mycroft can read the anger in the set of his shoulders, the quicker breaths and upright posture. He can also see that Gregory threw his coat on in a hurry, that his mobile has been shoved into his right pocket, that Gregory came here as quickly as he could.

Not the reaction Mycroft had expected, honestly. “Gregory--”

“No.” Gregory cuts him off with a sharp wave of his hand. He strides halfway across the room but not coming any closer. “You don't get to do that. You don't get to just decide what's best for me and expect me to toe the line.”

“Gregory--”

“You don't get to declare this is over, and you certainly don't do it by text message.” Glaring, Gregory folds his arms across his chest, hands caught tightly. He's still angry but it's a defensive stance; proof that this was both infuriating and hurtful. “I deserve more than that.”

Mycroft truly regrets spending time with Sherlock this afternoon. If he hadn't visited Baker St, if he hadn't watched Sherlock and Watson in their easy domesticity, in their shared glances and fond smiles; if he had ignored his own jealousy instead of bitterly telling himself it was foolish to want something as prosaic as romantic bliss. If he hadn't let himself consider all the ways this fledgling relationship was bound to fail, he wouldn't have sent that text to Gregory. “Gregory--”

“I deserve honesty if nothing else. If you don't want to see me any more than say so. Call me up or tell me to my face. Don't send a text. It's best if we don't see each other anymore? Just--” Gregory takes a breath, brows drawn and anger fading into vulnerability, fearing what Mycroft will say. “Be honest, yeah?”

Mycroft takes a good look at Gregory Lestrade: this man who wears his emotions on both sleeves. Who laughs when he's amused and shows when he's angry. Who can't help but leer when he's attracted to someone, or let his eyes glaze over when bored in departmental meetings. A man who has been nothing but honest with Mycroft, from letting his nerves show the first time they got a drink together to enthusiastically showing Mycroft his bedroom.

Yet Mycroft convinced himself this relationship was doomed. Told himself that he had always been unreliable at reading emotional cues, and interpersonal relationships have never been a strength, and Gregory had probably already recognised this ridiculous attempt as a failure. He'd convinced himself that Gregory must have seen this coming, that it would be a relief to him to have it finished cleanly.

Gregory's still watching him, waiting for a reply. He did ask for honesty. “I was wrong,” Mycroft says.

Gregory's handsome face crumples in surprise. “What?”

“I was wrong. I shouldn't have sent that text message.” It's the wrong thing to say; Gregory's face shutters in disappointment as he looks away. “Honestly? I let my insecurities get the better of me.”

It occurs to Mycroft that maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe he's ruined this. His own self-fulfilling prophecy. It makes him reckless. It makes him honest.

“I am terrible at this. Dealing with people. Give me economies, give me a crisis and it's a carnival show. I can keep every plate spinning and no one sees how.” It's like standing on a teetering ledge, looking down at the ground below: exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure. “I am capable of keeping the nation's nightmares at bay, but people? It's easier not to try. It only ends badly. People have every right to leave. Yet I'm trying. Because you're…”

Mycroft rubs a hand across his eyes, humiliated by his own lack of eloquence. It doesn't matter which language he's speaking, he still wouldn't have the words. He can't quantify how easy it can be to spend time with Gregory or articulate why he looks forward to Friday night when he knows they'll share it. It's not something countable like the number of dark eyelashes or how many bones Gregory's broken.

It's not something he can dissect into reliable little facts. It's something he wants with no justification or support.

There are footsteps coming closer. A hand over his, pulling it away from his face. When he looks into Gregory's warm brown eyes, the anger has melted into something much kinder.

“I am sorry,” Mycroft says, knowing he should have said it earlier. He glances at Gregory's hand wrapped around his cold fingers. It's such a simple gesture of comfort. It's not something Mycroft would ever consider doing. He sighs because some things are inevitable. “I don't want to end this but after today, I think you'd be quite justified to do so.”

“I'm not going anywhere. Today proves that,” Gregory adds with a small smile. He gives Mycroft's fingers a quick squeeze. “We can be terrible at this together.”

“You're far from terrible at this.”

“Give me a chance. I'm sure I could be terrible if I tried,” Gregory says and it's so ridiculous Mycroft feels himself smile.

Conspicuous Nameboard that asks u a question draws u to come into the store

Which design catches your attention and is likely to draw you in?

A "neutral" and "safe" design that tells u the name of the company to a conspicuous font size?

A "get out of here" design that provokes thinking and curiosity that gives more attention to the sales pitch than the name of the company.

Why?

Since long before i was born, the purpose of name board was to help the mailman deliver the letters to its destination and the customer to find place of the store.

Now with technology, Google maps, or you could reference the location of the store to the building the store is underneath at, etc. to find the place.

Why not utilise valuable marketing space to deliver a conspicuous, well sized n colourful sales pitch that separate your store from the other shops around u.

People could always remember your store by your quote than by your brand name that sometimes is a collection of alphabets without deeper meaning.

Without deeper meaning, people tend to forget the brand name rather than a meaningful quote?

Furthermore, with the overhead placement, well-sized font, people from a reasonable distance and across the street would have their attention and curiosity piqued versus the SAME, SAME and SAME collection of company names that does not motivate people to cross the street and find out more.

I could tell you more about how APPLE capitalise on being different to be successful, but I leave that for another day.

Profits before customers?

Making it difficult for customers to change show times to view seat availability pushes customers to bad seats > frees up good seats > and increase management profits.

Drawing inspiration from car parking lots, would it be possible for customers booking tickets online to view the percentage of seat availability or a mini-map appears when they hover their mouse over each show times?

What could other cinema operators learn from this observation?

Does management put shareholders first or customers first? Honestly?

Do the model - dad figure in the photo B (back cover of book) represent the majority of the Asian male population? Answer: No. Does the marketing of this book suggest that Asian women prefer non-Asian partners?

Answer: The non-Asian dad figure in the book confuses me.

For a book sold in Singapore where majority of the population are other races apart from non-Asian; wouldn't it be appropriate to show a Chinese, Malay, or Indian model dad to target the masses? Answer: The masses idolise the minority. Does this show that local women prefer non-Asian men over Singaporean Chinese/Malay/Indian men? Answer: Perhaps. Perhaps the target audience is intended for non-Asian dads and Asian mums. In that case, may I suggest the title of the book to be rephrased?

How do you increase the value of your comic book series?

Notice the beautifully integrated display of pictures on the book spine of the encyclopaedia on display on the shelf? Answer: Yes. It is beautiful. To sell comic books better; create an art piece (picture) on the book spine of the comic book that requires the purchase of several titles to form an image instead of having one picture on each title. Would that encourage readers to keep on buying more comic books? Answer: Yes. Would that make keeping and displaying comic books on your shelf aesthetically pleasing and would impress your friends? Answer: Yes. Overstocking the magazine's position which leads to the front cover of some of the magazines not shown in full view to the customer; why not take on fewer magazines and charge a higher premium to the publishers who place their magazines on the stand.

The lost sales opportunities due to poor presentation and overstocking of the magazines affect the publishers.

The newspaper vendor would only care about bringing as many magazine publishers on board as possible to maximise the seller's profits.

Does the magazines publishers' sales and marketing team conduct physical survey on the newspaper vendors ascertain and fight for the proper magazine presentation (if they value the product they create) or are they enjoying the comfort of the air-condition in their office?

If a can of #CocaCola costing a dollar could be placed individually with the front of the can in full view of the customer, why couldn't a magazine with higher profit margin per item properly present its product?

The front cover of the magazines are inclined on the magazine holder stand and are facing the store entrance. It 's hard to view the magazine's front cover when you are exiting the supermarket. Customers entering/exiting the supermarket uses the same entry/exit.
