I cannot read Japanese, but Reddit says the translation is:
"DeForest Kelly relaxing at his home in Sharman Oaks, California. There with him are his wife Calorine and his dog John he loves like a son. John sits on his knees all day long and never leaves him."
Twenty four years ago, on a sad June 11th at 12:15PM Pacific Time, DeForest Kelley passed away at the Motion Picture & Television Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.
On June 25th of that year, his ashes were scattered by boat in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Pt. Fermin by the Neptune Society.
Pt Fermin (below) is located in San Pedro, near Long Beach, California. It has a park, a beach, an old lighthouse and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.
Below is Pt. Fermin’s general location within California.
Pt. Fermin held importance to De and his wife Carolyn, as it was where they enjoyed time together when they lived in Long Beach in their younger days. They had lifelong friends in Long Beach, so I imagine they visited this place throughout their lives together.
A view of Pt. Fermin looking out to the Pacific Ocean.
DeForest and Carolyn Kelley (in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s) at home with their gorgeous cat Maggie. Here’s a little story about their pets told by De at a 1985 Star Trek convention
DeForest and Carolyn Kelley lived in a Ranch-style home in Sherman Oaks, California (an upscale section of the San Fernando Valley which is north of downtown Los Angeles). He purchased it around 1962. It was a 2 bed/2 bath home and was less than 1,300 sq.ft., but it had a big back yard with a pool. De once said “Small birds need small nests.”
The little heart above shows the area in Sherman Oaks where he lived. That’s the 405 freeway on the left.
Above was his street sign and his quiet tree-lined street. His address was 15463 Greenleaf Street, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 and his telephone number was 818/788-1196 (at one time, his area code was 213, but it changed when area codes in Los Angeles expanded).
This picture (of De giving Myrtle the tortoise a shower, while Cheers the dog looks on) shows a bit of his back yard. Note the stairs where his lawn sloped down from the house (important to know for later in this story).
Here’s De playing darts. He had a huge barbecue in the far corner of his backyard. The stairs in the above photo lead down to the barbecue area. Oh to have had a cheeseburger made by De’s loving hands.
Sadly, after De’s wife Carolyn passed away in 2004 (five years after De passed), the house was sold and torn down (torn down!!). A two-story, 6-bedroom, 6,200 sq.ft. house (what is derisively called a McMansion) was built in its place.
Above is the back yard of the new house (from a real estate posting). The larger house took away much of the yard (no more sloping grass and the barbecue in the far corner is gone).
It breaks my heart to know DeForest Kelley’s beloved home is gone. 😢
Happy Birthday dear DeForest. You are missed and are always in my heart.
My adoration for De has not wavered since 1972. Here are just a few(!) of my favorite pictures. If Tumblr allowed it, I would have posted a thousand more.

Cute article about De from the Lansing (Michigan) State Journal in January 1968. This was a United Press International (UPI) article that was re-printed in hundreds of newspapers across the country.
This is the first (and only time) I’ve ever heard that De had a fish named Bones, body surfed this late in his life or had property near the Palm Springs, CA desert. I simply love finding new information about him.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s death (October 24, 1991). On November 1st of that year, a service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills of Southern California. The public was allowed to attend, so I went.
This is De walking into the service. I didn’t take these pictures; they were taken by the paparazzi.
Invited guests/Star Trek cast and the like were seated downstairs in the auditorium. Fans were directed up to the balcony section. When I got to the chapel, the attendant asked my affiliation. I fibbed and told him I worked for Paramount Studios and gave him the name of a friend who worked there. I was allowed in downstairs.
I saw De, his wife Carolyn, George Takei and James Doohan seated in a row together. There was an empty seat in front of De, so I made a beeline for that.
As I walked in the row in front of them, they all looked up at me and in just glancing slightly left, I caught each one of their eyes and gave a tiny smile to each. They all smiled back. De was wearing a blue suit with a red tie. His hair was quite long in the back. He was wearing his glasses and was reading the program when I first saw him.
After I sat down, I heard Carolyn say to De “Look at all these people— we don’t have this many friends… well you don’t.” De replied “Look who’s talking.”
Then De asked George if he had been traveling since filming ended (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was released two months after this service, so I assumed De meant filming for that movie). George replied “No, not lately.” George asked James “How about you?” James said “No way.”
The ceremony began, so they stopped talking.
During the ceremony, they showed photos of Gene at various ages, Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Stewart were among those who spoke and Nichelle Nichols sang two songs. Amazing Grace was played on the bagpipes. I cried and I could hear sniffling behind me. The entire TOS cast was there, except for William Shatner. It was a beautiful service to honor Gene.
Here’s a news clip (with audio) from a Los Angeles TV station. De appears kind of nervous and is all fidgety with his tie. I’m sure he wasn’t thrilled to talk to the news after this upsetting event. Grrrr, they spelled both of his names wrong.
Here are some GIFS from news clips of De and Leonard after the service. I saw Leonard and he looked distraught. Notice his wife tries to shield him when he’s getting upset. That was incredibly sad to see.
My mom sent me this sympathy card, which was really sweet.
De and Carolyn at home. I think he’s handing her a little rosebud. There are so many ways to comment on this strange picture. I wonder what the photographer was going for here?
It looks like the bush is devouring De.
What is Carolyn doing in the garden with her good white shoes?
De, his wife Carolyn, Grace Lee Whitney and (I’m assuming) Grace’s husband Jack.
Here’s when the party started getting wild. Perhaps De’s shirt drove Nichelle and a woman named Joan Winston mad with lust. Check out Joan’s foot in the air.
Joan was one of the people responsible for the first Star Trek convention in New York.
