Not to proud of this one but I’m posting it anyway. Inktober day 3 The Engineer girl. Writing again done by a close friend.
The Engineer Girl
The spaceport was busy as usual, ships docking trying to get their crates in as fast as they could. Early bird gets the worm was the motto around here. Its a lot easier to sell unrefined ore if your not the twentieth ship trying to sell it at market that day. That’s how its always been on this mining colony. It didn’t matter her to her anymore though, she finally had a ticket off of this hunk of rocks.
She pulled out her ID just to look at it again. Name: Cass Nagal, Age: 22, ID number: 1B4907, but the most important part, Title: Engineer on Space Freighter B-34. Cass smiled from ear to ear. She had dreamed of traveling all over the galaxy and this was the best way to do it. She had never liked mining, she wasn’t bad at it but it was hard, unrewarding work. Her family had mined here for three generations and she was not trying to make it a fourth. Thinking about her family made her smile fade. A couple of years back there had been an accident that got a lot of people killed, her parents included. Ever since then she had been on her own. Well on her own as in flesh and blood. She always had Scrapp.
Scrapp was a robot she had built when she was much younger. She always had a knack for building and repairing, which is how she got the job in the first place. For being a robot that was built with spare parts he turned out fantastic, he was a little bit bigger then a cat and was held up by two propellers. He had two small arms with two pincers and he was her perfect little assistant.
In fact he was all she was really bringing with her. She had a backpack with some clothes, a couple tools and some spare parts and accessorizes for Scrapp but that was about it. Everything else she sold, no need to have a lot of things on the road and making sure there was nothing left to come back to just finalized everything in her head.
She looked at Scrapp and showed him the ID “Can you believe it Scrapp look at that! It’s finally happening! Time to start really living!!”
Scrapp made a couple of excited beeps and hovered close to Cass. He was such a weird little guy. She always wondered if one of the parts she had used was bugged or glitched because he had strange personality. Its something her parents always told her to fix but she just could never bring her self to do it. Scrapp was her friend, even if his “personality” got him in trouble sometimes, it would be like changing a friends brain, definitely not something you do, even if you could.
She looked around the port and was starting to worry if she would even find this ship. The port was giant, you could walk around for hours and still not even see half of it. That would be her luck too, if she missed the ship now who knows when they would be back here and if she missed it they might higher a different engineer. One that wasn’t late. She shook her head, she was making herself panic.
“ Okay think…think,” She muttered to herself. “If I was a big ol Freighter where would I be…”
She knew better to ask the locals, that would bring more trouble then help. Even worse would be to ask the “Port Security”, all of them were just hired thugs to push people around. Looking around she noticed a terminal to a dock that wasn’t being used. She might be able to plug Scrapp in and find out where the ship was being docked. She also knew that in order to do that she would technically be hacking into the port security and if she tripped an alarm it would be bad news. She took a moment to way the risks but she had to do it. She sold everything here, there was no next time.
“Scrapp scan my ID. I’m going to plug you in and you’ll have to find where our ship is.”
Scrapp excitably clapped his pincers together and swiped the card away from her. He scanned the card with his little eye and then threw the card back at her. I had to juggle it in order to catch it.
“Careful Scrapp! I know your excited but get your shit together!” she snapped at him.
Scrapp made a sad little noise and looked down at the ground.
Cass sighed, “It’s fine don’t worry about it, lets get you plugged in.”
Scrapp sure knew how to pull her heartstrings, the cute little bastard. I looked around making sure no one was looking. I was lucky everyone was way to busy trying to get to market before everyone else to notice me. I took a cord out of my back pocket and plugged it into the terminal, then plugged it into Scrapp. He made a weird little noise, I tried to ignore him.
“Alright bud be quick but be careful. We don’t need the port security on our ass today.”
Scrapp nodded then started his scan. She stood look out and everything seemed to be going well. A couple of minutes passed and she was starting to worry. The longer we were in the system the more likely we were going to trip something. She didn’t have much time to wonder though, Scrapp finally came too.
“You find it boy?”
Scrapp nodded and grabbed her by her shirt and pulled her towards the way the ship was.
“Hold on a sec I gotta plug you out..” Cass said but Scrapp interrupted her with some intense beeping.
“What’s wrong Scrapp I don’t hear any alarms…” Cass stopped talking and looked around. There were a couple of guards frantically searching around.
“Shit.” She muttered.
They must have added some silent alarms in the last month, she was not expecting that. They hadn’t been noticed yet so there was a chance they could blend in. They started to walk towards a crowded area. They tried sneak in as well as possible but not a lot of people had robots let alone hovering robots, it made her stick out like a sore thumb. It would only be a matter of time she had to think fast.
It was risky but since she wasn’t going to be living here anymore anyway she might as well leave in style. If she gave port security something real to deal with she would be in the clear.
They hid behind some crates and looked over at some of the docks. Perfect. There were a lot of ships, more then there should be on at a given time and that would work to her advantage.
She pulled out her wrench out of her backpack and told Scrapp to stay put. She snuck over to the ships and climbed below the deck. There she spotted the gravity stabilizer that locked the ships into place. She started to unscrew the bolts. She got the first one off, then the second finally onto the last one when she heard some commotion up top.
“ There you are you little shit.” she heard someone say.
Scrapp let off some high worried beeping, then she heard a thump, she had to hurry.
Finally she got the third bolt off and ripped out the gravity stabilizer. Almost instantly all of the ships on that side started to float away from the docks.
“What the hell? You stay there you bag of bolts.” the voice said and she heard the man stomp off.
She climbed back up and looked around, everyone was in a frenzy trying to get the ships back, just the distraction she needed. She went back to Scrapp and gasped.
“What did that man do to you are you okay?”
Scrapp made some weak sad beeping, the guy beat the hell out of his propellers so he couldn’t move. She had a once over look at him and he seemed fine otherwise.
She let out a relieved sigh, “Well its nothing I cant fix, thankfully. Ill carry you but you still got to point out the way.” Scrapp nodded.
Cass picked him up, she had forgotten how heavy he was, no time to think about it though. Scrapp pointed to the back of the port and we were off. About ten minutes of carrying Scrapp they finally made it to the ship.
“Oh thank god, you really need to go on a diet Scrapp.” Cass laughed.
Scrapp angrily beeped at her but she shrugged it off. She would apologize later.
She put Scrapp down and pulled out her ID, the ship had a scanner for entry so she put the ID in the slot. A moment later the ship unlocked, and an animated voice said, “Welcome aboard, Engineer Cass!” and the doors opened. Cass smiled, she had finally made it.
