The news of Kobe and his daughter haven't left my head since I saw the headline. I didn't follow NBA basketball during Kobe's time (I stopped around the year Jordan left), so I'm not quite sure why the news has affected me so much. As someone who used to play ball all of the time, I appreciate his athleticism and what he did for the game, but I think the connection for me lies in the haunting thoughts of him with his daughter in their final moments. I can't process that info, yet can't stop thinking about it. Also, I genuinely wanted to see what his animation studio would add to the industry following his short, Dear Basketball. With the enthusiasm for the medium he showed during his Disney visit, I felt he had the potential to offer a different tone to the animation landscape and it's so unfortunate that the momentum has suddenly stopped. We are super thrilled to announce that we are flying out to film one of our favorite animators, Glen Keane, to be in Pencil Test!  Glen was a character animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios for films including “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, “Pocahontas”, “Tarzan” and “Tangled. Keane received the 1992 Annie Award for character animation, the 2007 Winsor McCay Award for lifetime contribution to the field of animation and in 2013 was named a Disney Legend. Glen also directed “Dear Basketball”, an animated short film based on Kobe Bryant’s retirement poem in The Players’ Tribune. Glen and Kobe won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 90th Academy Awards for Dear Basketball. He is also directing the new Sony Pictures Imageworks animated film “Over the Moon!” We can’t wait to talk to Glen more about 2D animation! Saying “happy birthday” to someone who has passed away isn’t my thing, but I do like remembering them. I met Kobe Bryant backstage at the Annie Awards when he and Glen Keane were nominated and won for best animated short for “Dear Basketball.” I took this photo of them backstage – I liked the difference in height (although they’re both giants in my book)…and found it humorous that a world-class animator and a professional athlete were hanging out. After that, Kobe and I would begin texting each other every so often to see how the other was doing.
