In the far future, humanity has been driven to the brink of extinction by giant beasts known as klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in vast fortress cities called plantations. Children raised here are taught to operate giant mechs known as FranXX, the only weapon known to be effective against klaxosaurs in boy and girl pairs. Bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children know nothing of the outside world and can only prove their existence by protecting their race. Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, lost his motivation and confidence after failing an aptitude test. After missing his class graduation ceremony, Hiro goes to a forest lake where he meets a mysterious girl with two horns growing on her head. She introduces herself under her codename Zero Two, which is known to belong to the infamous FranXX pilot known as the "Partner Killer". Before Hiro can digest the impact, the plantation is shaken by a sudden attack by a klaxosaur. Zero Two engages the creature on his FranXX, but it is badly damaged in the skirmish and falls next to Hiro. Finding her partner dead, Zero Two invites Hiro to pilot the mechs with her, and the duo easily defeat the Klaxosaur in the ensuing battle. With a new partner by his side, Hiro has a chance to redeem himself for his past failures, but at what cost?
