For almost the entirety of his blissful performance, the bluesy Swedish musician kept his eyes tightly shut, as he seemed to tap into old souls to help conjure his tunes. He and his band play music steeped in American roots music, and his delivery recalls the way the Irish singer Van Morrison voices his soulful sounds. I can hear a Southern drawl in these slow, mournful songs. Daniel Norgren has been self-releasing his analog recordings for nearly a dozen years. At the Tiny Desk, he and his band sampled music from three different records — the oldest of which, "Moonshine Got Me," comes from his 2011 EP Black Vultures. His body sways and writhes as he and his band create a dream state calming enough to slow the day's hectic pace to a crawl. Take a seat on a comfy couch and have a listen. New Music For Old People: Daniel Norgren, Blonde Redhead, Griffin House

This column is like the title says — its intention is to fill the gap for those of us who were satiated musically in the ’60s and then searched desperately as we aged for music we could relate to and get the same buzz from nowadaze. iTunes was the answer for me in 2003 and I have been following the new releases every Tuesday ever since I realized there was an endless stream of music I could enjoy there.

I also include older items that I felt were obscure originally and might not have been heard back then. The reason I am writing this column is to make sure others don’t miss this wonderful music. These are not top ten items; but they SHOULD’VE been!

1. “Whatever Turns You On” — Daniel Norgren

You can’t tell on this track, but this singer is a Swedish lad with a taste for the blues. Born in 1983, he prefers the one-man band sound and usually performs in this mode. Unless he has four hands and feet, there are other musicians on this track, or he might have played all the parts by overdubbing. He has a great feel and strong respect for the past and it serves his purpose well. His last album was released in 2011. I hope he comes over here to play, as I am a fan just from this short track. Sometimes feel is everything.

2. “Equus” — Blonde Redhead

There are at least three bands that subscribe to this genre which I call neo-avante garde and I consider Captain Beefheart to be the founder. Deerhoof and Don Caballero are the other two and I enjoy the envelope-pushing of all three. Deerhoof and Blonde Redhead are REALLY similar because they are both fronted by a female singer. This is a good choice for you to see what BR is all about — a great deal of guitar exploration and lead vocals that tend toward a feline sound. This is NOT for everyone, but maybe there’s a few of you out there.

3. “The Woman With the Beautiful Hair” — Griffin House

There were two or three earlier tunes from this artist that caught my ear, but now it seems his talent is growing even stronger. This is a wonderful lyric — almost out of the Warren Zevon book. The delivery, arrangement and production stay way clear of crowding the song itself, and that’s an even better set-up. Now if Griffin can get some listeners, I think it’s time he deserves a little more respect. I love this lyric and, for that matter, everything about this.

Daniel Norgren Brings New Album to Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday

Sometimes it’s impossible to fully appreciate musicians without seeing them perform live, in person. The first time I saw Daniel Norgren onstage playing, I couldn’t help shaking my initial sense that it couldn’t be that guy, a tall, lanky, unassuming Swede, who was making that music, a quiet, almost mystical folk. As I came around to matching the songs to the songwriter, the music revealed its own more-than-meets-the-eye secrets, with its nonlinear structure and surprising full-band excursions. Earlier this year, Norgren put out his first international release, Wooh Dang (stream it below), filled with understated beauty and unfolding narratives of folk, blues and rock. “There is a tangible soul to Norgren’s music that is not only rare to find, but impossible to insert on purpose,” says No Depression. “It’s just there.” As magical as the album is, there’s no doubt that the songs will take on new life onstage, and on Friday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, New Yorkers will have the rare opportunity to experience that for themselves. The equally enchanting Jake Xerxes Fussell, with his own new must-hear album of old-school Appalachian folk that’s best appreciated live, Out of Sight (stream it here), opens a show that should be a night of superb songcraft. —A.
