[TRANSLATION] DAZED KOREA Magazine August 2015 issue x GOT7 JB
What are you looking at so intently?
JB: Oh, Iโm looking at the photos that were just taken. I was just thinking to myself, โThe scar on my back is still visibleโ. A couple years ago I fell and hurt myself while skateboarding. I thought the scar was gone but apparently not.
This is your first solo photoshoot but you donโt seem nervous.
JB: Oh, no. I was so nervous. Iโm used to seven of us in front of the camera but suddenly I had to do it all myself, I felt a bit overwhelmed. Because the only person people are seeing is me. Also I was told to take off my shirt and I was so out of it that I took it off, I feel so embarrassed.
Haha, sorry for asking you to take off your shirt. Anyway, promotions for your 3rd album Just Right are about to begin, right?
JB: Yes, the album is released on 7/13. Itโs always the same but we all worked hard to make it better than the last album.
By better do you mean #1 on charts?
JB: Yes. Of course in addition to that we also want to show improved performance, and for everyone to enjoy our music.
What should the fans look forward to from the new album? For โGirls Girls Girlsโ, the marial arts performance was impressive, and for โAโ there was the focus on cuteness.
JB: โJust Rightโ is a song that tells a girl who lacks confidence that she is just right the way she is now. There is a pop melody on a hip hop beat. The song is very comfortable to listen to, and the performance has a lot of funny and clever expressions, the choreography has memorable parts. It fits the members well.
JYP Entertainment artists all sing as if they were speaking, and the performance is good at visually showing the lyrics. Sometimes itโs like watching a musical.
JB: Yes, youโre right. Itโs really important to show the taste of the song. In the case of this album, we could express well enough so we re-recorded.
How to you express the taste of a song?
JB: Honestly I donโt really know myself yet. I used to think it had to do with breathing technique or how long you held a note, how you bent your voice, but itโs not that. Iโm still experimenting and practicing.
After releasing an album last November, GOT7 did not have many public activities. However, idols donโt seem to actually rest even when theyโre not promoting. For example, filming advertisements or going to photoshoots.
JB: Thatโs right. But during the last couple months, we were able to rest at home for at least a little while.
You didnโt go out anywhere, you stayed home?
JB: Iโm 22, which is prime age to go to the military. All of my friends have enlisted so Iโve kind of been lonely, haha. In addition to that I have a hard time becoming close to people who are younger, and all the hyungs are busy.
Are you the type to feel more comfortable around hyungs?
JB: Yes. If Iโm around people who are younger I always feel responsible and itโs hard.
But youโre the leader of GOT7 who is responsible for 6 members.
JB: It was really hard at first. If I became too familiar with the members that might interfere with my duties as a leader. That line has always been difficult. Even when I was going through hard times, I didnโt confide too much in my members, and worked to handle it by myself. So Iโm always more comfortable around hyungs. Even though Iโm a leader, 22 is still a young age.
One of Jaebeomโs keywords is Movie. You were a film major at university, right?
JB: Right now Iโm on break from university. Once I went on a program and I spoke a lot about my goals as a film director, but these days Iโve lost some interest. I like taking photos and I also want to try art. These days I like to look up paintings and think about what must have been running through the artistsโ heads when they created their art. I take a lot of photos.
What do you take photos of the most?
JB: The sky.
The sky?
JB: Yes. I like open scenery. I like to see how the sky is different from what it was yesterday, and from what it will be tomorrow. When I look at the photos Iโve taken, I think about what was running through my head when I took that particular photo.
In the past when you were on a program, a member asked you, โAre you having a hard time?โ and you asnwered 'Donโt worry about itโ. When asked 'Are you happyโ, you answered, 'I donโt knowโ. Are your answers still the same?
JB: Right now I donโt think Iโm going through hard times. Iโm much more comfortable with being a celebrity than I used to be. I still donโt know if Iโm happy. Even though Iโm not unhappy, Iโm not sure that Iโd be telling the truth if I said I was happy. I donโt think Iโve clearly found my color as GOT7 or Lim Jaebeom. I havenโt accomplished all of my goals so I donโt think I can say that Iโm happy yet. Iโll be happy. Soon.
