My friend and book group leader who I visit every Friday afternoon gave me this book for my birthday yesterday. Her daughter delivered it to me in the evening singing Happy Birthday on the doorstep.
My friend was 90 last November and this summer is 20 years of book group. She is a great fan of children's literature and reads it at times of stress. When my husband was first diagnosed with leukaemia at the beginning of last year I chose three children’s books from her collection to help me:
Jenny Spring - Ruth Clark
Four Plus Bunkle - M. Pardoe
The Borrowers - Mary Norton
William the Good - Richmal Crompton
I have heard of Miss Masham’s Repose and know it to be a favourite of my friend’s but I never knew it was by T. H. White. I remember the Christmas my mother gave me The Sword in the Stone and how I devoured it.

READING 18/5/23 - ‘WILLIAM THE GOOD’ - RICHMAL CROMPTON
Today I have finished reading ‘William the Good’ by Richmal Crompton. I borrowed this book from my friend Elizabeth in the spring, in order to kickstart my reading following the shock of Philip’s leukaemia diagnosis. (I also borrowed ‘Jenny Bunkle’ by Ruth Clark, ‘Four Plus Bunkle’ by M. Pardoe and ‘The Borrowers’ by Mary Norton). Elizabeth likes children’s fiction and years ago told me that it’s what she reads when stressed. Good idea.
I know Richmal Crompton and Mary Norton obviously but Ruth Clark and M. Pardoe were new to me.
I haven’t read much ‘William’ but greatly enjoyed ‘Just William’ last year when I read it for its centenary. It was only when googling about Richmal Crompton then that I discovered that the stories were written for adults. This makes total sense because the storylines and humour and language are way beyond advanced child readers.
What I am most intrigued by though is Elizabeth’s cast off library copy …

I was disappointed to hear that she didn’t get this in the Western Isles of Scotland (she has never been).
However now is the time to show off the library mug I gave my children (including librarian son) for Christmas …
