Well hello there my plantie & vintage friends! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on here besides on my stories. I’ve been pretty busy with a full time job which has me feeling pretty exhausted quite frankly, and I haven’t adjusted yet to being on my feet all day. Which is why a lot of my favourite hobbies have gone on the wayside a bit. I’ve only had enough energy to work, rest, and repeat. So I’ve slowly been pushing myself to do what I love to do in my down time, even if it’s just for an hour or so; which is rearranging my plants(& plant care) and changing out my vintage decor while the seasons change. Honestly, I’ve had Christmas colours up in my kitchen window until now,😳! So down it came, and Inow have a #newtome vintage springy green floral apron I purchased at @oldhouserevival and a few vintage white enamel pieces & kitchen tools. Oh and I finally bit the bullet and purchased a hanging pot of Philodendron Micans! I’ve tried growing potted root cuttings but they just never survived for me. I’ve wanted Micans for years for their beautiful multicoloured almost shimmery foliage! So I just had to hang it front and center in my kitchen window above my sink. What a view!🤍 Now if I can just find the cutest little simple plant hanger for my plant, that would be the finishing touch! So I came across this little outdoor brass light fixture that was just yelling at me to make something out of it for my plants! I have slowly been introducing more brass items into my decor, but I didn’t want to go with the typical brass candle holders and pots. Instead I’ve been trying to find anything unusual that could be used for plants or plant cuttings. This little brass electric lantern looked like it could house a tiny plant inside, and it is the perfect size to sit on my faux mantle(wall shelf) next to my other displayed treasures. So who out there likes using unusual vintage items as plant stands or to give your potted plant some height?! Here’s a quick little easy project that turned out great and is exactly what I wanted to incorporate into my plant area! A few weeks ago, I came across this vintage metal cake stand at my local SA, that I knew, once painted black, would be thee perfect way to display a plant or to give a plant some height! Trying to keep with my black & white enamel theme in the plant area, I thought this piece would add a nice touch and would look great with any plant! Other items I’ve used to raise my plants higher are by using my vintage scales, little wooden stools or mini chairs, stacked books, upside down container(plant pot)! Ya know thinking outside the box and using items for a different purpose is what I aim for! Oh how I love finding little treasures and using them for a different purpose! On one of my thrift trips to my local thrift store, I found these charming little mid century modern globe glass and brass candle holders. I have been on the look out for smaller brass items to decorate my mantle. Instead of taper candle holders and small round brass bowls & dishes, I’m looking for something more sculptural or unusual. Of course I didn’t want to use this for candles, it just had to be for plants of course!😂 So I had to find just the right size holder for some root cuttings. That was the challenge! I did manage to find and use shot glasses that fit perfectly into the hanging candle holder! If I ever change my mind, and decide to use it with votive candles I still can. It’s so wonderful to find some helping hands when you need them! Lol! Can anyone guess what these little vintage ceramic hands are actually used for? If you scroll to the last photo it says it all, literally! These are 1950’s little ceramic hand gum savers! Yes you read that correctly! I never knew such a thing was even invented once I found them and I just had to have them amongst my plants! I feel like I’ve been on a little vintage decor journey of self discovery. Now I knew that my love for mid century modern has come from love of surrounding myself with the memory of my childhood home. Furniture and decor that surrounded me when I was a child, is now something that I seek and is attached to warm fuzzy memories. My 🖤 for plants & enamelware! If I can find vintage enamelware that I can use as a pot for my plants, than I feel I just hit the jackpot! This #vintageenamel pot however was given to me over 20 yrs ago from my mother-in-law, and I had forgotten about it since I used to only use it outside in my garden hanging from a plant hook. I just knew I had to use it inside for my repotted #hoyacarnosa hanging in a south facing kitchen window. I honestly almost forget it’s there, since I don’t baby it as much as my other plants, I water it sparingly, and it seems to be slowly thriving while it’s unfortunately being ignored. I’m just happy it’s decided to keep trailing and growing new leaves along the way. Maybe one day it will decide to give me some beautiful fragrant blooms! I have been trying to find the perfect lamp in my unusual corner that has plants and a vintage painting. I say unusual because it’s not a perfect corner, in fact it is built around the chimney that goes through the house. I used to have an industrial like floor lamp with Edison bulbs that looked ok before when my living room was painted yellow. But for some reason it didn’t quite look right or provide the room with brighter light we need for the dark winter months. Until I remembered everything already had a vintage brass lamp we inherited from my mother-in-law over 25yrs ago that we barely use and has become completely dusty and tarnished. Before I went ahead and gave it a good polish and cleaning with ketchup and vinegar, I checked to see if I had a spare lampshade. I might need a bigger shade on it, not quite sure. But voila! I found the perfect lamp that was in my home this whole time and didn’t spend a penny!! How do you like the transformation? The lamp looks so perfect with my treasured vintage paint-by-number painting and my plants!
