EMMYS 2019: Zendaya, Ava, #Exonerated5, Regina King, Viola Davis & All Your TV Faves Bring The GLAM On The Red Carpet
The stars aligned at this year's EMMY Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in L.A. to honor the hottest television stars of the year. The red carpet was filled with melanin and we've rounded up all their looks. More inside...
Each year, the Television Academy brings all the hottest television stars under one roof for a celebration of all the TV shows that kept us entertained throughout the year. The 2019 EMMY Awards went down at the Microsoft Theater where tons of celebs stepped out to soak in the festivities, whether they were up for an award, there to show support for a co-star, or there to support their own show.
Our girl Zendaya killed it in her new role on HBO’s “Euphoria,” however, the series didn’t scoop up any nominations this year because it premiered after the EMMYs eligibility had already passed. We def expect to see the show scoop up nominations next year because it was one of the most watched and talked about shows over the summer.
The 23-year-old actress/activist served up old Hollywood glam in a sexy emerald Vera Wang gown that showed just enough skin, yet elegant at the same time. She went back to her red tresses and the soft waves were a perfect touch to complete her look.
The #Exonerated5 def deserved to be in the building as their docu-series shook the world when it premiered on Netflix. The Exonerated 5 (formerly known at the Central Park 5), including Antron McCay, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Korey Wise and Yusef Salaam - hit the carpet alongside "When They See Us" director Ava DuVernay.
"When They See Us" star Jharrel Jerome nabbed his first EMMY for his portrayl of Korey Wise.
The fab directress - who was nominated for two awards - kept with her signature fairy godmother look when she hit the carpet in a sparkly, jeweled Reem Acra gown.
"When They See Us" star Asante Blackk - rocking custom Tommy x Zendaya - brought his mother Aiyana Blackk along his date.

The 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago is most-remembered for what happened on the streets outside of it. Before the convention began on August 26, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley refused protest permits to most anti-war demonstrators and deployed 12,000 police officers, 5,600 members of the Illinois National Guard and 5,000 Army soldiers on the streets to meet any who showed up. These police and military forces violently clashed with Vietnam War protesters, resulting in hundreds of injuries and 668 arrests during the four-day convention.
“One day in Grant Park somebody took down a flag and the police used that as an excuse to go through the crowd beating people with nightsticks,” recalls John Froines, who helped organize the DNC anti-war demonstrations with Rennie Davis of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. “Rennie Davis and I were hit on the head with night sticks.”
Froines, who is now a professor emeritus of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, wasn’t arrested that day. But a year later, the U.S. government accused him, Davis and six other men of conspiring to incite a riot at the DNC. The others were Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party; David Dellinger, a longtime anti-war activist; Tom Hayden, cofounder of Students for a Democratic Society; Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, founders of the Youth International Party (whose members were called “yippies”); and Lee Weiner, who had volunteered as a marshal for the DNC demonstrations to help with crowd control.
The evidence against the Chicago Eight, as they became known, was always slim. None were convicted of conspiracy, and although five of them were convicted of inciting a riot, an appellate court dismissed the charges because it found that the judge had been biased against them. Fifty years later, here’s why the Chicago Eight trial that opened on September 24, 1969 was such a big deal.
1. The Chicago Eight were the first people tried under the first federal anti-riot law.

Anti-riot laws were all at the local or state level until the passage of the 1968 Civil Rights Act, which included a provision making it illegal to cross state lines to incite a riot. After violence erupted at the Chicago DNC, Mayor Daley wanted the government to prosecute some of the demonstrators under the new act. However, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s attorney general Ramsey Clark didn’t think there was a case.
“I interviewed [Clark] and he said he saw there was no evidence to try the defendants,” says Nick Sharman, a researcher at the University of Melbourne and author of The Chicago Conspiracy Trial and the Press. “He thought that there was more evidence against the police, who had violated the civil rights of the protesters in Chicago.”
The next year, Richard Nixon took office and appointed John Mitchell as the new attorney general. Mitchell—who was later convicted for his role in the Watergate conspiracy—was much more receptive to Daley, and decided to prosecute the Chicago Eight under the new federal anti-riot law.
2. Prominent voices challenged the legitimacy of the anti-riot law.

Three months before the Chicago Eight trial began, a group of prominent writers and thinkers published a letter to the editors of The New York Review of Books arguing that the anti-riot law set a dangerous precedent.
“The effect of this ‘anti-riot’ act is to subvert the first Amendment guarantee of free assembly by equating organized political protest with organized violence,” it read. “Potentially, this law is the foundation for a police state in America.”
The letter was signed by 19 people, including Noam Chomsky, Susan Sontag, Benjamin Spock, Judy Collins and Norman Mailer (Collins and Mailer would also testify at the trial). Because the Chicago Eight had begun referring to themselves as “The Conspiracy,” the 19 signers dubbed themselves the Committee to Defend the Conspiracy. They pledged to raise money to fund the Chicago Eight’s legal defense and encouraged readers to make donations.
3. There was a clear cultural clash between the judge and the defendants.

During the trial, yippies Hoffman and Rubin sometimes used unusual tactics to draw attention to their arguments. In one instance, they showed up to court wearing judicial robes to protest Judge Julius Hoffman’s decision to revoke Dellinger’s bail. When the judge demanded they remove their robes, they took them off and stomped on them. Underneath, they were wearing Chicago police uniforms. Another time, Hoffman unfurled a National Liberation Front (aka “Viet Cong”) flag on the defense table, and engaged in a tug-of-war over it with a court marshal who tried to remove it.
Sharman says the media tended to emphasize moments like these because they were so unusual. However, he thinks it’s important to understand these incidents in the context of the judge’s behavior toward the defendants.
“Even on the first day, Tom Hayden gave a fist salute to the jury and he was given a contempt of court citation,” he says. “It was like nothing could be done without the judge sort of stamping on them, so that sort of encouraged them to do it, I think.” By the end of the trial, the judge had charged all of the Chicago Eight as well as defense attorneys William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass with contempt of court.
4. The judge ordered Bobby Seale to be chained and gagged in court.

Froines argues Hoffman and Rubin’s robe incident “was basically a minor disruption,” and that “the main event in terms of disruption was Bobby Seale being chained and gagged.”
Seale had chosen lawyer Charles Garry to represent him in court, and because Garry needed gallbladder surgery, he asked Judge Hoffman to postpone the trial. To Garry’s shock, the judge denied the request and assigned Seale a new lawyer. Seale in turn rejected the court-appointed lawyer and asserted his right to defend himself. When the judge told him he couldn’t, Seale—the sole black defendant—called him a racist, and continued his attempts to represent himself in court.
On October 29, about a month after the trial started, the judge became irate and ordered staffers to chain Seale to his chair and gag him so he couldn’t speak anymore. There were no cameras allowed in the courtroom, but newspapers printed the shocking sketches of Seale bound and gagged in court. (The incident inspired the Graham Nash song “Chicago” released a year and a half later.)
“It was a horrendous thing that occurred,” Froines says. “It got a lot of attention, and should have.”
5. The judge sentenced Seale to four years for contempt and removed him from the trial.

A week after Judge Hoffman first chained and gagged Seale in court, the judge sentenced Seale to four years in prison for contempt of court. He also declared a mistrial in Seale’s case and removed him from the trial, turning the Chicago Eight into the Chicago Seven.
Judge Hoffman intended to try Seale separately for conspiracy in a new trial next year. However, after a jury failed to convict the Chicago Seven of conspiracy, the U.S. attorney in Chicago told Judge Hoffman that “it would be inappropriate to try Seale alone on a conspiracy charge,” and the judge dropped Seale’s charges.
6. Famous writers and performers took the witness stand.

During the trial, the defendants argued that the anti-war demonstrations had been peaceful, and that the violence was instigated by the police. To make this point, the defense called over 100 witnesses, many of whom had been in Chicago during the protests. At the time, a lot of prominent writers and performers were involved with the anti-war movement, and the witness list reflected this. The court heard testimony from comedian Dick Gregory, beat poet Allen Ginsberg, writers William Styron and Norman Mailer and singers Arlo Guthrie and Judy Collins.
It even heard testimony from Country Joe McDonald, a musician newly famous for singing the “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag” at Woodstock just a month before the trial began. McDonald tried to sing the anti-war song in court, and when the judge forbid it, he recited the lyrics out loud.

On February 18, 1970, the jury acquitted all seven defendants of the conspiracy charges, but still convicted five of them—Davis, Dellinger, Hayden, Hoffman and Rubin—of individually crossing state lines to incite a riot. Everyone (including the lawyers) already had prison sentences for contempt of court; and in addition to this, Judge Hoffman sentenced the five convicted men to five years in prison and gave each a $5,000 fine.
Rather than being happy with his acquittal, Froines says, “I was very upset by that because I wanted to be with my friends, of course. And having five people found guilty and two people being acquitted—I cried at that.”
Two years later, an appellate court threw out all of the convictions and the sentences Judge Hoffman had handed down—including Seale’s four years for contempt—citing the fact that the judge had been obviously biased against the defendants. At one point, Judge Hoffman even prevented former attorney general Ramsey Clark from testifying in front of the jury in favor of the defense, arguing that Clark had nothing useful to say.
After the appeal, most of the Chicago Eight continued their activist work, with Rubin standing out as the infamous yippie who became a yuppie in the 1980s. The four members who survived to see the trial’s 50th anniversary in 2019 are John Froines, Rennie Davis, Bobby Seale and Lee Weiner.

Fifty Years of Going to Shows, Pt. 1: The First Decade in Kansas City (mostly)
A photo of a flyer of Led Zeppelin’s 11/3/69 show at Memorial Hal in Kansas City, Kansas, showed up in my FB feed. I was there; it was my second concert; and I was 14 years and 6 weeks old. So the first one, Johnny Winter, was somewhere in the late summer or fall before then. I declared the 9/4/19 Hot Tuna show as the 50th Anniversary but that’s not strictly accurate. It will do just fine though.
It prompts this series of reminiscences of the magic of live music in my life. That was the intoxicant (well, except for that Jefferson Airplane show in October 1970), but it still has been addictive. But--and this is speaking as a Deadhead--seeing the show has always been more important than the party. I’ve only recently taken to writing my souvenirs and even setlist curation came along later, thanks to the Dead.But I do have these memories and will indulge myself with a series of souvenirs.That Johnny Winter show got my hooked (blues, guitar solos on top of guitar solos, and loud). Winter slid along the stage in a trance; I somehow even recall a purple velvet jacket setting off his long white hair. Brother Edgar came out to play organ, including on an extended “Tobacco Road” that was part of the show in those days. I would see Winter again a couple of times in KC, mostly with And, made up of Rick Derringer and other members of the McCoys. Those were more rock’n’roll (hoochie koo, don’t you know) than deep blues but he was a hell of a player. He was here in St. Louis just a few months before he died. I considered going but didn’t and so missed closing that circle.
That Led Zeppelin show sucked. It was short, they used borrowed equipment, and Bonham was drunk and knocked over a cymbal stand more than once.
Somehow I wasn’t deterred.Memorial Hall--3500 seats maybe, also home to professional wrestling--was the primary venue for my very early days in the 1970s. Show <5 was Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, including Eric Clapton. That was my only time to see him and it was right at the time when he just wanted to be a member of a band. So, he did do “Crossroads” as a showcase but he was restrained and tasty, dammit. I wish I knew their repertoire and appreciated how those players were interchangeable on albums by Dave Mason, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, and again with Clapton including in Derek and the Dominoes.
We snuck in there to see the end of BB King’s set one night and wished we’d paid for the whole show. This was pre-celebrity days, so it was a Black crowd and I have to think the show was better for it.
Memorial Hall is also where I sort of saw Jefferson Airplane, hampered by empty stomach excitement, Ripple, and brownies. At the same time, though I felt very small and the music was very loud, it is the 10/24/70 set list that survives that is the one I remember. So maybe I wasn’t as brownied as I thought. The “We Can Be Together>Volunteers” opener was striking and “The Fat Angel” (Casady on a droning rhythm guitar) was hypnotic. It was enough though to shift exclusively to booze and keep my head at shows.
I also recall a wonderful Dicky (well, actually, Richard for this tour) Betts show with a large band that did bluegrass and country (Vassar Clements was in the band, but I think there were some horns) as well as blues and rock and a gigantic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”
My one bit of the Dead early was seeing the New Riders of the Purple Sage with Loggins and Messina as a warm up act. It was an actual date with an actual young woman and, though I saw her for a while more, I was a bit too transfixed by the music. Misplaced priorities. I saw Loggins and Messina another time in that venue and the horn section was particularly developed in making the tunes so unique. A middle show along the lines of their live double album with the wonderfully jammed out “Vahevala” was perhaps elsewhere (I nominate Cowtown Ballroom of which I will say more shortly).
Bonnie Raitt with Jackson Browne was a good pairing, though she was better. And there was Poco still doing the core repertoire with that long jam tune that came from Messina and relied on Rusty Grantham pulling magic out of the pedal steel.
I did finally the Grateful Dead in that good old hall twice in 1972 and once in 1977, but there is at least one separate installment on that universe to come.
But what a place!
Cowtown Ballroom, an old skating rink, run by a veteran of Bill Graham’s operation was a slightly later haunt. It stands out for 11 pm Hot Tuna shows that went on and on. That was my regular taste of San Francisco. Loud, loud, loud and maybe too jammy. That is, I sensed that between Jorma jamming on and Papa John Creach’s fiddle, poor Jack Casady had to play three dimensional chess to anticipate the note that would pull it altogether. It was brilliant but not a powerful as him at full throttle. Still I loved those shows for the promise of the possibilities
The other Cowtown act was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the classic “Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy” quintet, doing Kenny Loggins songs before he was Kenny Loggins, all sorts of roots music before that’s what we called it, and great versatility with some jaw dropping fiddle excursion and/or with other instruments from John McEuen. Now their warm up act for 4 shows in 14 months was a comedian named Steve Martin who was really funny the first time and I wanted my friends to hear it the second time. By the third time, it was stale. By the fourth time, I started doing punch lines ahead of him first to my friends and then to a wider circle. I was getting his laughs from 20-30 people just enough of the rest of the crowd to throw off the rhythm.
But, I’d go to lots of Cowtown shows: Badfinger (Beatle tinged, but not the Fabs themselves, and I’ve never seen any of them, not Macca nor even Ringo’s All Starr revue), the KC Symphony playing on the floor to reach a new audience. Zappa twice--with Flo and Eddie in the band and Steely Dan on its first tour (Zappa was sneering) and the Waka Jawaka big horn section show--enough to convince me that he was quite a guitar player.
Freedom Palace was another venue for a while, bigger than Cowtown, maybe even than Memorial Hall. It was certainly easier to spread out in. I remember it for guitar shows, Johnny Winter And and Mountain.
Municipal Auditorium was the big venue of 12,000. It was cavernous and sound wasn’t good in those days. Stephen Stills on the tour that included a set with the Memphis Horns was a little clunky. Neil Young supporting Harvest was better in the same space, but it wasn’t Crazy Horse. Crosby and Nash were next door in the Orchestra Hall and they were magical with the same show as “Just Another Stoney Night.” Crosby wisecracked (except there was a standard bit of interchangeable patter it turns out) and the acoustic guitars rang over glorious vocals on the key parts of that fabulous repertoire. I saw Crosby and Nash with Jeff Pevar in Pittsburgh courtesy of Ellen’s brother in the 1980s and that was pretty special.
But I saw all 4 as part of that groundbreaking 1974 tour, one of the first big Bill Graham national tours. Jesse Colin Young and then the Beach Boys opened fabulously. The churning guitars from a dark stage hinting at a tune that I couldn’t quite place before Bam! lights on and it’s “Love the One You’re With” is as dramatic as anything I’ve seen.
I need to get back to Municipal Auditorium but let me stay outside for a lackluster Allman Brothers Band show with the Brothers and Sisters line up. Dicky at least, possibly Gregg too seemed off and maybe Chuck Leavell hadn’t quite found his place. But that was a hard time for that band. Over at the football stadium, the Rolling Stones did not deploy the inflatable phallus for us in 1975 but they kicked it out hard following Chaka Khan and The Eagles as openers. Jagger’s energy was amazing and Keef had that band, including Billy Preston on keys and at least Bobby Keys on sax, able to turn on a dime.
Okay, I had learned the Municipal Auditorium lesson and knew to sit on the floor as close as possible. That worked on back to back nights for Stevie Wonder the first night for a heavy “Innervisions/Talking Book” set list with maybe some of “Fulfillingness First Finale” songs being road tested. It was funky and loose for us hippies but the Motown professionalism was something to behold. The next night was Weather Report for the first time, Jaco was there but more restrained than a later show at an old movie theater, The Midland.” Opening for Weather Report was a Richard Thompson-less Airport Convention. But Dave Swarbrick was leading the festivities and I mentioned this show to him when he was at Focal Point here in St. Louis with Martin Carthy. It is both true that he barely remembered it but that, yes, it was weird. I wish I paid more attention.
Besides Weather Report later at the Midland, I best remember there a strong strong Little Feat show building on the momentum of “Waiting for Columbus.” I guess Lowell George was not that happy then, but that was one of my favorite eras for the band with a double jointed rhythm with guitars, keys, and George’s voice sailing over it all. For both shows, I was sitting fairly high overlooking the banks of keyboards Joe Zawinul and then Billy Payne had deployed. My favorite Weather Report era actually is with Alphonso Johnson rather than Jaco, so the earlier show at Municipal Auditorium suited me better. Jaco’s flash was still unique and “Birdland” was catchy not an ear worm, but on the whole Wayne Shorter was given less and less space. Still, Shorter and Zawinul together on “Badia” or even “In a Silent Way” leading into “Boogie Woogie Waltz” was a high point at both shows.
Since I’m fusioning, I liked Chick Corea’s Return to Forever tour in support of “Romantic Warrior.” Though Stanley Clarke showcased “Bass Folk Song” mostly solo and the acoustic but bombastic “Romantic Warrior” grabbed me more than guitar, piano, synthesizer surges.
I saw two Headhunters shows from Herbie Hancock with lots of rhythmic fun/k and even pyrotechnics. He couldn’t help but play beautiful Fender Rhodes. But what I really liked was seeing the Mwandishi band at a proper jazz club with sit down dinner courtesy of a friend’s parents. That band had all the fusion elements, rhythm and electronics, but there were three horns for Hancock to arrange and an acoustic piano so that he could work into and out of “Maiden Voyage.”
One of my most favorite shows ever but obscure as can be was somewhat fusion-y, The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood playing to 100 people max in a funny little venue in a converted dry cleaner establishment near 39th and Main in Kansas City. Hahn had played with Gary Burton after Larry Coryell but before Pat Metheny and had been at Monterey with John Handy. He was playing a Les Paul in overalls and grew a beard. Mel Graves, bass, and George Marsh, drums and who showed up with David Grisman in the 1990s, were also jazzers gone to seed. Hahn was from Wichita and they hooked up with an organist/singer who played with Dave Mason and then the 1980s Crosby Stills and Nash named Mike Finigan. He had been in a Lawrence, KS, band with Lane Tietgen who had a batch of countryish songs that nonetheless had both clever words and similar spaces for soloing. I was captivated and saw them two nights in a row. Only a few of us in the world ever saw them, but they were an amazing amalgam of sounds.
I had to leave town to see Bob Dylan, but see him I did by going over to St. Louis to see him on that stunning tour with The Band. They’d settled into them opening and closing the first set together with a The Band interlude. The second set was Dylan acoustic, the Band, and then a burning ending. I recall that our show got “Desolation Row” in the slot that often went to “It’s All Right Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” so that was a treat. But, the key songs from both of them were there. I saw a 1979 show in Chicago courtesy of a friend there, a more sprawling set and band, plus more songs from albums I didn’t know as well. I wasn’t drawn back into the Dylan universe then and really haven’t been back. I did see a couple of Never Ending Tour shows--2004 and 2007 with Elvis Costello--but I am once again in the midst of passing on what could be my last chance to see such a seminal influence.
But I have my memories. Dylan and others are part of this first decade of listening. I never saw a Beatle or Paul Simon or Joni Mitchell or Van Morrison. But I did get into this game when giants walked the earth.
So I have my memories.
Next, probably, more jazz and fusion in KC and Chicago; Focal Point and its predecessors; jam bands; separately, the Grateful Dead cosmos; and jazz recently. Possibly, European Tradition Art Music (lobbying for this as more accurate than “classical” because only a small part of the tradition is Classical)

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND July 19, 2019 – DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME, THE LION KING
Before we get to the big studio release… which I haven’t seen… I’m gonna focus on a new doc opening in New York and L.A. on Friday, DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME (Sony Pictures Classics). Directed by A.J. Eaton and produced by Cameron Crowe, this movie surprised me first and foremost because I never really had much interest in Crosby Stills and Nash, so I wasn’t sure if I’d really care much to hear Crosby’s story. (Granted, one of my favorite bands, Yes, was hugely influenced by CSN.)
Much of the film is made up of interviews with Crosby conducted by Crowe, who first interviewed Crosby when he was a young journalist in the ‘70s. There are some real revelations in the film – similar to the recent Marianne and Leonard– including Crosby admitting that he got a number of girlfriends hooked on drugs. He also lost a girlfriend in a car accident that deeply affected him, although it’s also interesting to hear from some of his bandmates like Graham Nash, who claim that Crosby is not the nice guy some might perceive.
Whether or not you’re interested in Crosby and his life/career, Remember My Name is a fascinating look at a pivotal person from the ‘60s and earliest days of rock, another great doc from Crowe, who should really be doing more about the history of music.
I may have mentioned before that I have practically zero interest in Walt Disney Pictures’ THE LION KING, even though I am a long-time fan of director Jon Favreau’s work… except The Jungle Book, in which I was disappointed. Maybe it’s just because I was such a fan of the original animated movie and Rudyard Kipling’s book, but not having any immediately connection to the 1994 Disney animated movie, nothing has really gotten me excited to see this one.

Bleecker Street also hopes to expand Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE nationwide into over 500 theaters, which seems a bit forward, considering that it didn’t fare nearly as well as A24’s The Farewell in limited release last weekend.
LIMITED RELEASES
Before we get to the regular fare, on Wednesday, Trafalgar Releasing is the Trey Anastasio doc Between Me and My Mind in theaters across the nation on Wednesday night. Being a fan of Trey and Phish and having seen this at the Tribeca Film Festival, I can say that it’s a MUST-SEE for anyone who has ever enjoyed Trey’s vast output both with Phish and his solo groups. Besides showing Trey in the writing and production process for his latest solo album, it also shows him and the members of Phish preparing for the 2017 New Year’s Eve run at Madison Square Garden. Director Steven Cantor was given amazing access to Trey, as he also filmed a few personal conversations the singer/guitarist/songwriter has with his parents about their history together. I’m actually going to see it again tonight.. but if you’re in the New York area, go see it at the Alamo Drafthouse, where it’s hosted by the awesome Jordan Hoffman. (6:30pm show is already sold out but they’ve added a 9:20 showing.)
A couple other docs this weekend include Radu Jude’s Romanian dark comedy I Do Not Care If We Go down in History as Barbarians, which opens at the IFC Center. It’s about the dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu, who started a program of ethnic cleansing in the summer of 1941, something that’s recreated in present day by an idealistic theater director, causing controversy. It opens at the IFC Center on Friday.
Also opening at the IFC Center is Tilman Singer’s German horror film Luz (Screen Media), about a young cab driver who has been contending with a possessed woman who can endanger many lives. Lastly and also at the IFC Center, there’s Paddy Breachnach’s Rosie, the story of a mother trying to protect her homeless family, covering their struggle over 36 hours.
Joe Manganiello from Magic Mike and his wife Sofia Vergara from Modern Family star in Raymond De Felitta’s Bottom of the 9th (Saban Films) about a baseball player named Bobby Setano, who ends up in jail at the age of 19 just as his career is taking off. 20 years later, he is tryng to win back everything he lost in this movie from the director of the excellent City Island and Rob the Mob. It’s in select theaters, On Demand and digital platforms.
There are two new docs opening at the Metrograph Friday:
Martin Bell’s Tiny: The Life of Erin Blackwell is a follow-up to his 1984 film Streetwise (see “Repertory” below), this one following up on that film’s 14-year-old subject “Tiny” and what she’s been through since then, going from drug addiction to poverty, having given birth to ten children. There’s also Marie Losier’sCassandro, the Exotico! (Film Movement) looking at the 47-year-old Saul Armendariz aka Cassandro, the openly gay champion of the Mexican exotico wrestling circuit, which features competitors in drag. The film is shot entirely on 16mm.
I just want to draw special attention to New York’s Village East Cinemas, which really has turned itself around with the variety of films and programs it’s offering, partially to compete with some of the new and revitalized arthouses. This week, it has three new movies, beginning with At War (Cinema Libre Studios), the new film from French filmmaker Stéphane Brizé (The Measure of a Man), once again teaming him with Vincent Lindon as Laurent Amédéo, the spokesman for a company that is going to shut down its factory, putting over a thousand employees out of work.
The Village East is also one of the theaters showing Aaron Harvey’s Into the Ashes (RLJEntertainment), starring Luke Grimes as former criminal Nick Brenner who believe he has escaped his past until his old crew shows up for the money he stole from them, taking Nick’s wife and putting him on a path for revenge.
I know very little Steve Barron’s Supervized except that it’s about four aging superheroes in an Irish retirement home and it stars the likes of Beau Bridges, Louis Gossett Jr., Tom Berenger and Fionnula Flanagan.
LOCAL FESTIVALS
This weekend at the IFC Center is the first-ever 51 Fest, honoring the “female majority on screen” by paying tribute to the women of the world with an amazing line-up of films. The fest opens at the SVA Theater on Thursday night with Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story and then continues at the IFC Center with the New York Premieres of Bart Freundlich’s After the Wedding remake starring Julianne Moore, Paul Downs Colaizzo’s terrific Brittany Runs a Marathon (with a QnA hosted by my pal Ophira Eisenberg), Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’s doc For Sama and more. The fest will also host the World Premiere of Lisa Cholodenko’s episode of the Netflix series Unbelievable with Cholodenko and actors Kaitlyn Dever, Danielle Macdonald and Merritt Weaver appearing in person. In general, this seems like a strong new festival with lots of talent attending, so here’s hoping that this becomes a regular annual thing.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Premiering on Netflix Friday is Peter Sullivan’s suspense thriller SECRET OBSESSION, starring Brenda Song (The Social Network) as a newlywed who is brutally attacked at a rest stop leaving her with amnesia. As her husband (Mike Vogel) takes care of her at home, a detective (Dennis Haysbert) goes looking for her attacker who also might have kidnapped his daughter.
I’m more excited about the return of Jerry Seinfeld’s series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with its new season, as it’s one of my favorite Netflix series by far.
REPERTORY
Although there aren’t a ton of limited releases this week, it’s an exciting time for repertory fans for reasons you’ll discover as you go through the entries below.
METROGRAPH (NYC):
To tie-in with the release of Tiny (see above), the Metrograph is also screening of a new restoration of Martin Bell’s 1984 film Streetwise, about the kids who would gather on downtown Seattle’s Pike Street. This weekend’sLate Nites at Metrograph is the movie musical classic, Alan Arkush’s 1979 movie Rock ‘n’ Roll High School starring the Ramones!Playtime: Family Matineesgoes with Disney’s 1979 film The Black Hole on 35mm, and you can bet I’ll be there for that.
THE NEW BEVERLY (L.A.):
As we get closer to the release of Tarantino’s 9thfilm, his rep theater will continues its James Bond series with Thunderball as the Weds. matinee and then both Weds and Thurday night is a grindhouse TRIPLE FEATURE (!!!) of Curtis Hanson’s 1972 film Sweet Kill with 1973’s Soul Hustler (with Larry Bishop in person) and the 1971 film Sweet Saviour. The Friday/Saturday double feature is Mervyn Le Roy’s Gipsy (1962) with Sidney Pollack’s This Property is Condemned (1966), while Sunday and Monday is a Fabian double feature of Ride the Wild Surf (1964) and Thunder Alley (1967), the latter co-starring Annette Funicello. This weekend’s KIDDEE MATINE continues the Love Bug series with Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo from 1977. Tarantino’s own Django Unchained is the Friday midnight movie with something called I Love You, Alice b. Toklas (1968), starring Peter Sellers (!), on Saturday at midnight. Monday’s matinee is the 1995 film The Basketball Diaries, starring a VERY young Leonardo DiCaprio. Tuesday night’s official GRINDHOUSE triple feature is Joe Namath’s CC & Company(1970), along with two Jack Starrett films, The Losers from 1970 and Hollywood Man from 1976. I understand that many of the films being programmed are ones that had an influence on Tarantino’s upcoming film Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood, which hits American theaters across the country next week.
FILM FORUM (NYC):
Not be outdone by the younger New York “upstart-house” theaters, Film Forum is kicking off a month-long Burt Lancaster seriesbeginning with a week-long 4k restoration of Robert Siodmak’s (1946) The Killers, starring Lancaster and Ava Gardner. The series will then continue with classics like the Sweet Smell of Success and From Here to Eternity starting Friday, July 26, so check back next week for more on this series. Mikhail Kalatozov’s The Cranes are Flying (1957) will end Thursday to make room for above.
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):
On Wednesday, comedian Greg Proops screens the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factoryas part of his “Greg Proops Film Club.” The “Highballs and Screwballs” series continues Thursday with Humphrey Bogart’s Key Largo (1948) with The Palm Beach Story (1942). On Friday, the Egyptian does a “Mikhail Kalatozov double feature” of The Cranes are Flying (1957) and I Am Cuba (1964), Saturday afternoon is the latest in the “Style of Sin: Pre-Code Film with Kimberly Truhler” series with two starring Kay Francis, Girls about Town (1931) and Jewel Robbery (1933), both in 35mm, while Saturday night is a screening of Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 classic Stalker.
Just a reminder that the AERO is closed for the month of July for “repairs and upgrades” but will be back in August with its own entries in the “Highballs and Screwballs” series.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
I’m pretty excited about the second part of the Quad’s Fresh Meat: Giallo Restorations Part II, starting on Friday. I havent’ seen a single one of the movies but with titles like The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire and Strip Nude for Your Killer, I have to try to see some of these for sure.
FILM OF LINCOLN CENTER (NYC):
FilmLinc’s new summer series is This is Cinema Now: 21st Century Debuts, which is fairly self-explanatory but features fairly new films including Barry Jenkins’ Medicine for Melancholy, screening in a double feature with Damien Chazelle’s Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, Andrew Bujalski’s Funny Ha Hawith Maren Ade’s The Forest for the Trees, Shane Caruth’s Primer with Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko, and many more with many screening twice but a lot only screening once. Some of them are playing as two-for-one double features and if I wasn’t dealing with Comic-Con stuff, I’d totally go see the Damien Chazelle/Barry Jenkins double feature on Saturday night.
BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):

On Friday, IFC Center will present a 60thAnniversary revival of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic North by Northwest in a new 4k restoration. Still no word on when it’s new series will begin but presumably soon.

The Astoria arthouse begins a retrospective called “Barbara Hammer, Superdyke” on Friday, which runs through Sunday, July 28, honoring the late filmmaker with a number of shorts series under the titles “Mediated Sensuality,” “Ecstatic Subjectivity,” “Hall of Mirrors” and more. I really don’t know anything about her films but you can learn more at the link above.
ROXY CINEMA# (NYC)
Weds. and Sunday, the Roxy shows a 35mm print of the 1964 thriller Marnie, while on Thursday, there’s a very rare screening of Roman Polanski’s 1967 dark comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers.

Pittsfield, MA– Berkshire Theatre Group and Artistic Director/CEO Kate Maguire are excited to announce additions to the fall and winter seasons, as well as casting for the Fall production of David Auburn’s Lost Lake at The Unicorn Theatre.

The Afro-Cuban Experience, led by Dizzy Gillespie’s long-term bassist, John Lee, showcases the unique rhythms and well-loved melodies (such as “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo”) of Gillespie’s library of Cu-Bop, which he developed with Chano Pozo in the ’40s and ’50s. Their repertoire also explores the broader world of Latin-American music. An all star lineup of regional and local artists gather to celebrate the life, spirit and music of the legendary Gregg Allman, hosted by Rev Tor’s Steal Your Peach Band.
Gregg Allman, who passed away in May of this year, was a founding member and lead singer of the legendary Allman Brothers Band. His career spanned five decades, with many hits such as “Sweet Melissa,” “Midnight Rider” and “One Way Out.” Gregg Allman was considered one of the pioneers of southern rock, blues and soul music
This event is hosted by Rev Tor’s Steal Your Peach Band. This all star group features Tor Krautter, Andy Crawford and Drew Costa of Rev Tor/Last Waltz Live, along with Dan Teichert of Arlo Guthrie/Xavier, Brian O’Connell of Uncle Sammy/Gordon Stone Band and Jeremy Walz of Soul Sky. These artists will serve as the back up band for the regional and local guest artist celebrating the music of Gregg Allman.
Patrons are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food donation of any size to be delivered directly to a local food pantry after the show. Guest artists are asked to perform in support of the food drive.

Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience is the nation’s most innovative and unique show utilizing the works of The Beatles. This amazing group, anchored by brothers Billy, Ryan and Matthew McGuigan, perform as themselves and leave the song choices completely in the hands of the audience. This is done through request cards that audience members fill out prior to the show. On those cards, the audience member only needs to fill out three things: their name, their favorite Beatles song and the reason why they chose that song. The cards are collected and two minutes before the show begins, a set list is created based upon the songs chosen and the reasons that the audience members chose those songs make up the narrative of the evening.

The Grammy Award-winning acappella ensemble, Ladysmith Black Mambazo captures South Africa’s historic struggle in an inspiring repertoire that melds the tradition of Zulu harmony, singing songs born in the mines during the apartheid era, with hints of gospel. Whether performing at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration, in Disney’s The Lion King, or alongside Paul Simon on his album Graceland, Ladysmith Black Mambazo creates beautiful harmonies that have brought its unique sound to international prominence. The rich uplifting sounds and effortlessly synchronized dancing convey universal themes of faith, hope and peace, yielding a performance of pure, uninhibited joy.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, then a teenage farm boy living on the lands just outside the small town of Ladysmith, South Africa. Joseph incorporated the town into the name he would give his group to honor his family history. As well, the word Black is a reference to the black oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo, the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. So began the fifty-plus year career of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s most recent CD, Walking In The Footsteps Of Our Fathers, was nominated for Best World Music Album of 2016, marking the group’s 17th Grammy Award-nomination, in addition to its four wins.
