30 Faces Risograph Zine
At Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2023, Lisa Wicka and David Wischer led a workshop where artists made an Exquisite Face collage using a template of a face that shows the placement of eyes, nose, and mouth. Wischer turned these letter-sized collages into a Risograph-printed zine. In Kolaj #39, we report on this publication. Read More

W9 SDL. Poster draft development
Following the feedback I got in class, I decided to play around with the idea of 'whats in my bag' and took my colalge from the first example of them being layed out to one where it fits my current handbag into the equation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was thinking of using the tape as a labeling tactic, In my mind i was thinking of the trend of showing what's in bags on social media, shown below. I think its interesting how the different bags also reflect whats inside - really shows how different your belongings become as you grow - perhaps I could play on this idea of carrying 'things' with you your whole life. That they make up your bag
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to continue this idea of whats in my bag, but wanted to include some fun elements, I was drawing inspriation from the movie posters of the 60s.. some of the work done by Rene Ferraci aswell (previously mentioned artist in my community) - i think showing my 'media consumption' theme within the poster alongside girlhood could be a good idea. Some of the posters I was looking at while designing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't really like the look of the boxes behind the objects or even inbetween the pages, I wanted to 'marry' the two pages together, at this point I was told that they had to be seperated pages between imagery and text so I followed that idea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what I am working towards right now, the idea that all these objects 'fell' out of my bag, and now i have to explain them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To play into my future as an interaction designer, i thought making the poster could be a cool idea, to explore how my poster could become an experience - i thought it would be interesting to animate the objects leaving my bag with music - the text could possibly pop up on the side as an object 'falls out'.
I dont know what color palette to go with right now, I want to get feedback before proceeding. The bigger blank box I have left uptop is where I would put my title, and down the blank right side of the spread is where my 20 object descriptions would be in columns.

I contributed a couple of post-it collages to the expo organised by coupee.org! It’s a project celebrating World Collage Day with about 3.000 post-its made by artists all over the world. They’ll be on view at De Krook until the 23rd of May. I accidentally deleted all the photos I took of mine apart from this one, so a visit to De Krook is the only way to see the ones I made, oops.

FROM THE PRINT ISSUE
The Comfort of Crows
In Kolaj #39, we review The Comfort of Crows, a new book by The New York Times contributor Margaret Renkl, illustrated by collagist Billy Renkl. "These collages offer a parallel depiction of the seasons, running alongside Margaret’s essays. In her manuscript, Margaret’s yard and neighborhood are profoundly meaningful; in my analogous path through the year, the meaning she finds in the world is underwritten by its physical beauty." A Glittering Solar Analemma
Nelly Bay, Queensland, Australia. Maureen Alsop, Ph.D. is the author of Tender to Empress, a collection of visual poetry. These visual poems are crafted under the mechanics of Écriture Feminine, an increasing interest of mine that arises from a resistance to traditional constructions and a personal understanding of writing through intuitive procedures, sublimation and surrender. It is a glittering solar analemma; an unattested revolution, an infinity reflected in ellipses, omissions, and disintegration. Read More

COLLAGE ON VIEW
Jetlag
Mark Watkins at the Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom through 1 June 2024. The central theme of Mark Watkins' “Jetlag” explores singular moments in time, time passing, the experience of discovery as we travel through time and the idea that time itself connects us all. This exhibition features new, larger scale collage where the process is deliberately spontaneous and intuitive, each piece of work recording a personal journey of discovery resulting in a physical record of how time has been spent. Love and Parties, Death and Horror
Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Denise E Clemen is interested in the hidden and in mysteries. "I’m interested in the struggle to hold it all together while things are falling apart. I want to know how our stories–yours, mine, and the planet’s will end. Meanwhile, there’s love and parties, death and horror. My collage work is analogue, done with a lot of precise cutting. It often includes my own hand marbled, hand painted or handmade paper. Every piece of paper I see is scrutinized for potential as a piece in a future collage." Read More

COLLAGE ON VIEW
The Way In
Jackie Leishman at the Sasse Museum of Art in Pomona, California, USA through 27 April 2024. Jackie Leishman sees the world as a collage, a complex layering of experiences and perspectives. Her artistic journey has led her from the confines of the photograph to the liberating expanses of collage. In “THE WAY IN,” Leishman delves into an in-between space claimed by collage, drawing from various mediums such as drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking. This exhibition is a testament to her belief that art is not just seen but felt, residing in the delicate balance between the seen and the unseen. Curated by Ahmad Shariff. Read More

FROM KOLAJ 32
Mind the Gap
In Kolaj 32, Rod T. Boyer dives into the relationship between haiku and collage. He writes, "As a practitioner and observer of collage, I have long operated under the assumption that one of its principal mechanisms is juxtaposition, the placing of two (or more) items from different contexts next to each other. In this way, the artist uses a new connection to signal a new idea or vision." MORE

FROM KOLAJ 32
Cutting Edge
Rebecca Steiner’s collages are in dialogue with American pop culture, excess and mass consumption: the stayholds from which she constructs environments and takes candid snapshots of the figures presented. Contextualizing images of fifties and sixties Americana for today’s audience, Steiner reinforces the idea that both the public and private spheres are still oppressive in their socially-condoned definitions, leaving very little room for experimentation, openness and the marginalized. Each collage serves as a mise-en-scène, where a singular moment in time culminates in a dramatic, active performance between and amongst the figures. Madeleine Rhondeau offers a review of Steiner's collage in Kolaj 32. MORE

Stay Grounded
Portland, Maine, USA. During the pandemic, Amanda Petrozzini started collaging nearly every day, and it was fun to see all of these bright colors and abstract shapes take over her blank white pages. She was surprised by the colors because when she previously made art, it was often dark and moody. MORE
