None of them learned to say I Love You because daring to love each other so openly and freely would only leave them vulnerable to the wrong kinds of opportunists. Togashi's writing style really favors subtlety and subtext and he's also twice as good at masking the complexities in his writing. if kurapika's eyes turn red because of any strong emotion not just anger then Kurapika's eyes could also turn red because he's happy and thus for them to turn color when he's with the people he cares about could mark an epoch in his character where he learns not to push away the people who want to help him. and dissolve the eyes as a symbol for his dark past and become a sign of hope

a lot of the destruction Gon leaves in his wake can be explained very logically and reasoned through, yet Togashi did not make that the total sum of his writing to go -> and that explains everything he's ever done. because he builds on the notion that there is method to Gon’s madness by instead going -> and in spite of that he is human. you cannot strip his character of that immutable fact. and in that humanity, there is love to be received and given yet.
