BORDER REIVERS - SIR WALTER SCOTT AND THE DAY OF TRUCE - CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS
BORDER REIVERS – SIR WALTER SCOTT AND THE DAY OF TRUCE – CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS
BUCCLEUCH RAIDERS       Walter Scott was born in 1565. His ancestral home was Branxholme in Teviotdale. Today one of the four original towers of Branxholme still stands, the Nesby tower, about five miles south of Hawick in the Scottish Border country. In 1596 a Day of Truce was held between the Scots and English at the Dayholm of Kershope on the Border Line between England and Scotland. …

But Dallas? Haunted, uncool, materialistic, understudied, deeply second-tier and determinedly urbane at the same time. Try-hards in Bottega Veneta, their endless oil-and-gas money gleaned from other people’s sweat. Dallas is the America that America don’t want to show. And yet the city has a seductive appeal. When Nobel Prize winning writer and expert chronicle of empire V.S. Naipaul covered the Republican National Convention in Dallas in 1984, he wrote: “Air-conditioned Dallas seemed to me a stupendous achievement, the product of a large vision, American in the best and most humane way: money and applied science creating an elegant city where life had previously been brutish.” Naipaul was right. Like Jack Adkisson smoothing the edges of professional wrestling for his little family empire, Dallas loves to smooth the boundaries between country and city. Here you get a luxury car to cosplay city rich, then you get actually rich, then you buy a recreational ranch to cosplay country. Maybe only Miami enjoys money on as pure a level as Dallas does. I’ve seen men in stingray cowboy boots chatting through their manicures and heard a waiter in an expensive restaurant share a bawdy anecdote from their childhood in the Panhandle as they uncork the Krüg. One of my first weekends living here, I went to Deep Ellum, a neighborhood as essential to early blues recordings as New Orleans was to jazz. It was the peak of a Friday night. I saw a glistening new canary-yellow Porsche with paper tags and a license plate frame that read PORSCHE OF SHREVEPORT crawl down Elm Street. A young woman drove and her friend rode shotgun, the top down, their hair in the wind, sugar money and refinery money drifting in their wake. What Northern Ireland is to poets, DFW is to child stars (Selena Gomez; Demi Lovato; Kaitlyn Dever; etc.). Local Millennials and Zoomers will argue that Dallas is the progenitor of “bro” as an omni-race omni-gender pronoun. There’s exceptionally good eating here: Lao, Viet, Ethiopian, various sub-genres of barbeque, seafood from Sinaloa, pozole from San Luis Potosi, Iraqi bakeries, a half dozen steakhouses so thoughtful and so good that they make one reconsider the entire genre. AT&T Stadium absolutely rules. I’m the son of a Philadelphia Irish sports zealot and—forgive me father—when I was a guest at a Cowboys game, I bought Cowboys gear for my then-infant son and snapped up a Michael Irvin shirt for myself. I hit the Emmett Smith shimmy in a hallway. I regret nothing. Critics would say that Dallas was built to house the money. Yes, it was. As were Milan and Hyderabad.

The unexpected link between FF8 and FF9
I don't know if this is because eight and nine were developed simultaneously, or its just sheer coincidence; but they share an incredibly specific premise.
A group of magical blooded orphans' home is destroyed. Leaving a very small amount of their race left in the world.
If you're familiar with the Sorcerer class from D&D, then you know that this archetype gets their power from their bloodline. Usually from being connected to divinity or some magical beast; Dragons, Demons, or Gods.
In the world of Final Fantasy, that is effectively what a Summoner is. However; there are two types of Summoners. Those who are linked in some way to the beings they are summoning, and those who aren't.
Tho, there are often themes in both games about how one can eventually be corrupted and become a magical chimera hellbent on power.
*coughcoughTheNorgcoughQueenBrahncoughcough*
Those who are linked to the Summons they make pacts with in FF8 and FF9, the Summoner clan, of which Eiko and Garnet are both a part of. And the orphans at Balamb Garden, including Irvine and Selphie from Galbadia and Trabia respectively.
And, for some reason; Rinoa.
Why do I say this? Because despite not being affiliated with SeeD or the Gardens, Rinoa knows two things unique to this group.
How to Summon and Junction a GF, *AND* how to [Draw].
Think about; We only ever see Draw in FF8, a game about making a pact with magical creature in order to obtain more power.
And these People are *all* Orphans, taken from their home and forced into fighting a metaphysical threat.
Simultaneously, the Summoner tribe's homelands in FF9 were attacked and destroyed, leaving only Garnet and Eiko as the remnants of the summoner Tribe.
They were targeted specifically for their strength. And Garnet was adopted and effectively kept as a pet to Queen Brahn despite being her "daughter".
FF8 does something no other game in the series does. They explain the mechanics of being a Summoner in depth. That is what the [Draw and Junction] commands are.
Part of the Summoner's toolkit.
It is reused later by Yuna in FFX, where she communes with the divine statues in order to junction their power. And who is the sole heir of the Summoner bloodline.
There are no other summoners *except* for the dreamers laid waste in Zanarkand. Which may be the city of Insomnia, but that's another story for another time.
This same story is repeated for historical summoners with the summoner bloodline. Or, are themselves corrupted by magical beasts. Like Terra,
If FF7 was the weaponization of Casters and Black Magic. Then FF8 was the weaponization of Summoners or Sorcerers.
One is the attempted replication of the abilities found in the summoner people, and the other is using them as tools of war.
What I haven't quite figured out yet; is the connection between all that and [White Magic]. Garnet being separated from her summoner past seems to have influenced her abilities to come out as Holy magic, and she seems to be well versed in it, despite there not really being a rational reason given.
It's often Described that the [Black Mages] fought against the [White Mages] in a hellish war. And yet, while both may be derived from the Summoner Tribe's abilities. I think White Magic is still it's own thing.
--Not to be confused with Racial supremacy.--

In the annals of Scottish history, a tale as ancient as the mist-shrouded glens unfolds, a tale of kinship, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Highlands.
Here, amidst the beautiful landscapes of Scotland, the tradition of clans emerged, weaving together Celtic, Norman-French, and Norse threads into a rich tapestry of heritage.
At the heart of this tradition lies the concept of the clan - a term derived from the Gaelic word 'clann,' signifying "family", yet extending its embrace to all who pledged allegiance to the clan chief. Whether by blood or by bond, members found solace and strength within the protective embrace of their kin.
Led by a clan chief, these communities forged a way of life shaped by the rhythms of the land-farming, tending to livestock, and engaging in the timeless rituals of Highland culture. Yet, amidst the tranquility of everyday existence, the specter of conflict loomed large.
The turbulent currents of Scottish history bore witness to countless clashes-clan against clan, invader against defender - as land and legacy hung in the balance. But it was the fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746 that delivered the decisive blow, shattering the old order and ushering in an era of upheaval.
The Highland clearances dispersed clans and severed bonds. In the hearts of those tracing their lineage to Scotland's soil, the spirit of the clans endures, a testament to community, resilience, and the timeless majesty of the Scottish Highlands.

Irish literature has a special place as part of the British/English-Language canon, thanks largely to Wilde-Yeats-Joyce-Beckett, but which would you say are the best works and writers of Scotland and Wales?
I will unfortunately have to pass on Wales. I don't think I've read any Welsh literature except for the Mabinogion (selections) and Dylan Thomas (anthology pieces). And Raymond Williams, I suppose: not, however, my favorite critic. Surely Dylan Thomas is the most celebrated of Welsh writers, though. And Roald Dahl, but he's a blank to me.
I'm no expert on Scotland, either, but I appear to have read a reasonable amount of Scottish literature by accident. I have nothing non-obvious to say, however. There's their celebrated Enlightenment, first of all, with David Hume's urbane and skeptical review of the limits to our knowledge and Adam Smith's humane interest in the emotional origin and economic extension of what we're morally capable of. And Charlotte Lenox, looking forward to Austen's disenchantments with her Female Quixote. Then comes the counter-Enlightenment: Robert Burns's earthy testaments in dialect that presage Romantic verse and its lyrical ballads, Walter Scott's recreation of the vanquished clan-life that invents the historical novel, and perhaps above all Thomas Carlyle's thundering proto-fascist denunciations of modernity in a prose that destroys forever all rhetorical decorum and prepares the ways for everyone from Emerson to Melville to Lawrence. Modern myths at the fin de siècle: Robert Louis Stevenson giving us Long John Silver and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Arthur Conan Doyle coming through with Sherlock Holmes. And Peter Pan, too, though I've never actually read that, either play or novel—just caught its later refractions. Who in the 20th century? David Lindsay with his cult fantasy novel A Voyage to Arcturus, favorite of Frank Lloyd Wright and Harold Bloom and Alan Moore, which bored and horrified me so much. Muriel Spark, skeptical as Hume, inventive as Stevenson: I must read more of her. I must read more of Alasdair Gray, too, but I just recently enjoyed his enviably inventive Poor Things on account of the film. (And I must read more of Scott. And something of Smollett. And Scottish Boswell's life of English Johnson. I've read as much Adam Smith as I ever want to read, however.) Finally, I was a teen in the mid-to-late '90s, so, too old for Harry Potter and his semi-Scottish creator—that was kids' stuff, I thought, and still think—I spent my adolescent time instead poring over (as I have exhaustively mentioned) Grant Morrison and (as I may not have mentioned at all) Irvine Welsh. That's all this provincial American has to tell you about Scottish literature for now.

On 5th July 1530 Border reiver, John Armstrong of Gilnockie, up to 50, (numbers vary) of his men were hanged for blackmail by James V..
The judicial murder of Johnnie and his men was a shameful crime by the young Stewart monarch.
Johnny Armstrong of Gilnockie was youngest son of the Laird of Mangerton, the clan chief. He was probably the most famous of all the Border reivers, dreaded on the English side of the Border, but dearly loved by his people, a highly respected and gifted chief.
Johnnie had established a very successful and lucrative protection racket which extended into England as far south as the River Tyne. All within this region paid tribute to him for their own safety and protection.
In 1530 disorder was widespread. The king made determined efforts to establish the rule of law. From Edinburgh, escorted by a strong force, he set off to go hunting in Ettrick forest. On the way, several prominent outlaws were caught and sent back to Edinburgh where they were executed.
Eventually, the king encamped at Caerlanrig near Teviothead, and invited the principals of the reiving clans to meet him with promises that their lives would be spared if they were prepared to submit themselves to their king.
Gilnockie, apparently, was among those invited. Considering his experience and astuteness, he must have been quite sure of the assurances of his safety he received. Confidently, Gilnockie set off from Langholm Castle accompanied by an entourage of about 50 men, included Elliots, Littles and Irvines. They prepared well for the meeting equipping themselves in the very best attire and rode north.
Passing through the narrows of Moss Paul they were ambushed by detachment of the king’s horsemen who escorted them to Caerlanrig. At Caerlanrig, they were brought before James who, when he saw them so finely attired, expressed his anger that they should surpass the king in finery, and said;’ What wants yon knave that a king should have’.
In the confrontation that followed it soon became clear that the king had no intention of granting any pardon and he ordered that Gilnockie and his companions be taken away and hanged.
Gilnockie did not plead for their lives but he did offer many inducements if their lives were spared as he was a powerful chief and could offer much.
However, it became clear that the king would not be swayed and proudly he said: ‘I am but a fool to seek grace in a graceless face, but if I had known, sir, that you would have taken my life this day, I would have lived upon the Border in spite of King Harry (Henry VIII) and you both and would have don my best horse with gold to know that I was condemned to die this day. And so they were led away outside and he and all his men were hanged.
There is no official record in Scotland or in London of a trial, and it is quite clear that no trial took place.
The previous year, 1530, the people of Eskdale had received remission and there is no reason for believing that any further charges had been brought against Gilnockie. He and his followers were reprehensibly betrayed and were hanged without any pretext of a trial.
At Caerlanrig, beside the church and within a railed enclosure are the graves of Johnny Armstrong and his numerous followers, hanged without trial by the boy king James V in 1531.
'Ye lied, ye lied, now King,’ he says 'Altho’ a King and Prince ye be! For I’ve luved naething in my life’ I weel dare say it, but honesty!’
The murder of Gilnockie and his men caused, first, disbelief and then rage, not only with the local clans but throughout much of the borders. Clans came out in open rebellion against James. Even the Border barons turned against him.
This was an act of supreme treachery and recognised as such by so many.
Gilnockie was a shrewd and wily chief and a great survivor. While there are no contemporary account of the arrangements that may have been made, it is impossible to believe that he would have deliberately submitted himself, and his men, to the king’s authority unless he had received irrefutable assurances from the king of safe conduct.
The fact that this act resulted in widespread revulsion and condemnation by so many, even those close to the king, adds force to the theory that the Gilnockie party were lured to their deaths by an amoral, treacherous king.
One of the Child Ballads tells the story of Johnnie Armstrong,. the Child Ballads is the colloquial name given to a collection of 305 ballads collected in the 19th century by Francis James Child and originally published in ten volumes between 1882 and 1898 under the title The English and Scottish Popular Ballads.
Johnny Armstrong
Some speak as oor lords, some speak as oor lairds, And sic-like men o' high degree. Of a gentleman I sing a song, Sometimes called Laird o' Gilnockie.
The king he writes a loving letter, Wi' his ain hand sae tenderly; And he has sent it tae Johnny Armstrong, Tae come and speak wi' him speedily.
The Eliots and Armstrongs did convene, They were a gallant company; “We'll gang and meet our royal king, And bring him safe tae Gilnockie.”
“Make kinnon and capon ready then, And venison in great plenty; We'll welcome hame our royal king, I hope he'll dine on Gilnockie.”
When Johnny came before the king, Wi' a' his men sae brave tae see; The king he movit his bonnet tae him, He weened he was a king as well as he.
“May I find grace, my sovereign liege, Grace for my loyal men and me? For my name is Johnny Armstrong, And subject of yours, my liege”, said he.
“Away, away, thou traitor strang, Out of my sight thou may soon be; I granted never a traitor's life, And now I'll not begin wi' thee.”
“Grant me my life, my liege, my king, And a bonny gift I'll gie tae thee; Full four and twenty milk-white steeds, Were a' foaled in a year tae me.”
“Away, away, thou traitor strang, Out of my sight thou may soon be; I granted never a traitor's life, And now I'll not begin wi' thee.”
“Grant me my life, my liege, my king, And a brave gift I'll gie tae thee; All between here and Newcastle town, Shall pay their yearly rent tae thee.”
“Away, away, thou traitor strang, Out of my sight thou may soon be; I granted never a traitor's life. And now I'll not begin with thee.”
“Tae seek het water frae cold ice, Surely it is a great folly; For I have asked grace of a graceless face, But there is nane for my men and me.”
“Had I my horse and harness guid, And riding as I want tae be; It sall hae been told this hundred years, The meeting of my king and me.”
“Fareweel, thou bonny Gilnock Hall, Where on Esk-side thou standest stout. Gin I had lived but seven mair years, I would hae gilt thee round about.”
John murdered was at Carlin Rigg, Wi' a' his gallant company; But Scotland's hairt was ne'er sae wae, Tae see sae mony brave men dee.
Because they loved their country dear, Frae Englishmen, nane were sae bold; When Johnny lived on the border-side, Nane o' them daur come near his hauld.

Cover Reveal – Star Wars Outlaws
Tumblr media
This month, Star Wars Outlaws graces the cover of Game Informer. Regardless of your history with the series, there’s no denying the impact that Star Wars has had in the pop culture landscape. The Original Trilogy inspired countless other pieces of media and the subsequent releases have all been noteworthy for one reason or another. But it was the Original Trilogy that developer Massive Entertainment – the team behind games like The Division, The Division 2, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – chose to make its playground. We traveled to the coastal city of Malmö, Sweden, to learn all about the open-world scoundrel adventure set in a galaxy far, far away.
Our cover art this month, provided by Massive Entertainment, shows the protagonists of the story, Kay Vess and her companion Nix, in a cantina, presumably accepting a job. Cantinas serve as the gathering place for the types of seedy individuals Kay and Nix seek out for work. On the back cover, we get a glimpse of one of the criminal factions Kay can accept jobs for: the Pyke Syndicate. You can learn more about Kay, Nix, the syndicates they interact with, the Reputation System, and plenty more in our 12-page cover story of Star Wars Outlaws!
Tumblr media
But that’s not all that’s housed within this latest issue of Game Informer! Marcus Stewart visited Bandai Namco in Irvine, California, to get his hands on Sand Land, the anticipated action title from ILCA. Speaking of the great Akira Toriyama, Kyle Hilliard takes some time in the issue to pay tribute to the legendary manga and anime icon. On the topic of hot-button issues, Wesley LeBlanc spoke with several game developers who are using artificial intelligence in different ways to learn their reasoning and try to grasp the ethics of doing so. Zachary Avery interviewed the team behind indie publishing label Finji (as well as several developers that have published under Finji) and wrote an in-depth profile, while Marcus Stewart spoke with the developers behind the hit Poker-inspired roguelite Balatro about its runaway success. Finally, I traveled to Los Angeles, California, to catch up with the director and producer of Street Fighter 6 and attend Capcom Cup X to see the first-ever $1 million grand prize get handed out.
That’s on top of our standard preview suite. In this issue, you’ll read previews for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Dune: Awakening, Kingmakers, MechWarrior 5: Clans, TopSpin 2K25, and more!
Here’s a closer look at the cover:

Windenburg - Winter 2023
Shawn Labeau (68), Siobhan Labeau (69)
Tumblr media
The Labeau home underwent a transformation with Irvin's departure for college, leaving Shawn and Siobhan as empty nesters. This shift in dynamics opened up a new chapter in their lives, marked by the exploration of newfound freedom and shared moments.
Tumblr media
Shawn, always an early riser, took up the responsibility of preparing breakfast for Siobhan. He quietly slipped from the bed making sure not to disturb her as she slept soundlessly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For many years Siobhan had taken the time to wake up early and feed the family before going to work. This role reversal was something that they both found fulfilling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The quiet mornings allowed them to focus on each other and rekindle the passion that defined their earlier years.
With the house to themselves, their days unfolded with diverse activities.
Tumblr media
Shawn, with a familial green thumb, tended to his garden. It may not have been as large as his sisters, but he was proud of it all the same.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Siobhan discovered a new interest in video games, realizing the allure that had captivated their son, Irvin.
Tumblr media
Every once and a while Jaqueline would visit for a game of chess with her Siobhan. On one of these days she had her cousin Vanessa in tow.
Siobhan was delighted to see her niece, but wondered what brought her all the way from Oasis Springs to visit.
After all, Winterfest was still a few weeks away.
Tumblr media
"It would be nice if your sister would make the time to visit." Siobhan said as she studied the board.
Tumblr media
"To be fair, she is all the way in Newcrest. It's not exactly next door, mom." Jaqueline replied.
"Well your cousin managed to pop in. New Crest is not that far away from Oasis Springs" she reasoned.
Tumblr media
"She's hear to celebrate your fourth grandchild" Jaqueline said motioning to herself.
Tumblr media
"Oh honey how wonderful!" Siobhan exclaimed popping out of her seat to gather her daughter in her arms. "Winterfest will be so much brighter this year!"
Tumblr media
After the hugs and celebrations Siobhan took a moment to privately address her concerns with Vanessa.
"I heard you and your mother spoke." Siobhan began. "Are you okay? There won't be a repeat of last years Winterfest will there?"
Tumblr media
"Of course she spoke to you about it" Vanessa huffed. She was annoyed at the way news was spread in the family. She and her mom still hadn't spoken since their last conversation, but Vanessa promised herself that she would not make another scene during the holidays for Talia's sake.
"There won't be any trouble this year Auntie. I'll speak to mom at a later time."
"Good" Siobhan replied immune to Vanessa's attitude.
Tumblr media
After Jaqueline's visit the rest of their days buzzed by with anticipation.
Shawn and Siobhan increased their visits to Jaqueline's home in an effort to spend as much time as they could with their grandchildren, before their new sibling arrived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shawn made sure to stay as active as he could in their new home gym, which Siobhan greatly appreciated.
Tumblr media
And before they knew it Winterfest was a few days way and once again the house would be filled with the laughter and spirit of the whole Labeau - Augustin clan once again.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Casts Peter Mullan as Red Jacob MacKenzie, Sara Vickers & 2 More
Kelli Boyle, TV Insider Apr 3, 2024
The Outlander spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has added four more actors to the clan. TV Insider can exclusively announce that Peter Mullan, Sara Vickers, Brian McCardie, and Jhon Lumsden have joined the cast of the Starz series, currently in production in Scotland, and they’ll bring to life characters fans have already heard of in the flagship series.
Tumblr media
Mullan will be playing Red Jacob MacKenzie, laird of Clan MacKenzie, father to Ellen (Harriet Slater), Dougal (Sam Retford), and Colum (Séamus McLean Ross), and maternal grandfather to Sam Heughan‘s Jamie Fraser.
Mullan, a veteran Scottish actor and filmmaker, can currently be seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and recently starred in the series The Northwater with Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell, as well as in Barry Jenkins’ critically acclaimed The Underground Railroad. He earned an Emmy nomination for Top of the Lake and has also been seen in Ozark, Westworld, Cursed, and Mum.

Brian McCardie
McCardie will be playing Isaac Grant, laird of Clan Grant. And Lumsden will be playing Malcolm Grant, Isaac’s son and a potential suitor for Ellen.
McCardie has been seen in Outlander before, in a Season 1 cameo as Sir Marcus MacRannoch. He’s also known for Rob Boy, Line of Duty, Low Winter Sun, Snatch, and more.

Jhon Lumsden
Lumsden is a relative newcomer, with roles in Karen Pirie, Blood, Sex & Royalty, and Pancake. He’ll next be seen in The Famous Five, coming out later this year.

Sara Vickers
Vickers will be playing Davina Porter, a housekeeper in the Lovat household, mother to Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Jamie’s paternal grandmother. As previously announced, Brian’s father, Lord Lovat, will be played by Mary & George‘s Tony Curran.
Vickers is a stage and screen actor best known for her role as Joan Thursday in the Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavour from 2013-2023, as well as Sunshine on Leith and Shetland. Vickers played Ms. Crookshanks in Watchmen alongside Regina King and Jeremy Irons. She recently starred in Guilt.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood tells the love stories of Jamie (Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) parents. Slater and Roy play Jamie’s parents in the 1700s Scottish Highlands, with Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine as Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, in the 1900s England during World War I.
