Tiny World 2 Research Task
Christopher Boffoli is a fine art photographer, photojournalist, independent filmmaker and journalist based in Seattle.  He is known for his series ‘Big Appetite’ where he uses foods and mini figures to create different and fascinating scenes such as this one that he has made to look like a car wash setting made out of pasta noodles.
Tumblr media
Tatsuya Tanaka is a Japanese photographer who also works with miniatures.  Tatsuya also uses food like Christopher but also takes everyday objects and makes them into something completely different such as this image here he has taken a toothbrush and made it look as if the figure is playing the piano.

Tiny Worlds 2 Research Task
Christopher Boffoli -
his  website : https://www.bigappetites.net/
his Instagram : @bigappatitesstudio
Christopher Boffoli specialises in fine art, commercial and editorial photography. He is also a journalist.
Christopher Boffoli’s ‘My Big Appetites’ fine art photographs feature tiny figures photographed against real food backgrounds. In this project he chose to work with only natural light on the whole series. Changes are made to the composition and often to the figures in his photos often changing f-stops until he is happy with the outcome.  Boffoli uses real food to create his sets.
Tumblr media
I recommend checking out his Instagram he has a lot of interesting and unique photos.
Felix Hernandez -
his website ; https://www.hernandezdreamphography.com/home
his Instagram ; @hernandez_dreamphography

Big Stopper ND 10 stop Lee Filter and a ND 1.2 stop graduated soft Lee Filter. He uses these filters occasionally when doing long exposure shots using natural day light. Hernandez creates surreal miniature photographs using digital editing and hand crafted props and objects

Inspiration - Tiny World Photographers and Set Building
Christopher Boffoli
From his website ‘Big Appetites’
Christopher Boffoli is a fine art, commercial and editorial photographer. His diverse body of work includes editorial and documentary travel photography. But he is best known for his Big Appetites work which features tiny figures posed against real food landscapes.
The set-ups come from a very natural place. I'll usually start with the food, observing what's in season at the farmers market, considering what I've shot before. Or I think about iconic American foods, like Oreo cookies or Twinkies, and how an image of those things might tap into someone's early memory (or current closet addiction/supermarket guilty pleasure). I also consider how I can populate those images with figures with a context that makes sense.

Tiny World 2 research task (22/01/21)
Tiny world photographer #1: Seattle-based Christopher Boffoli
https://www.bigappetites.net/commercial-work
Boffoli does a lot of commercial work for the food industry. His series Big Appetites has its own website, and his work has been featured in the media of 95 countries. He uses miniature figures and a lot of food items including cereal, pineapple, broccoli and sugar cubes. He frequently has plain backgrounds or backdrops to his shoots, with strong block colours or whites to help emphasise the subject matters.
Boffoli states that Seattle is often overcast which gives a natural diffused light, and he tries to use that as much as he can, although he will sometimes use artificial lights simultaneously if there is not enough natural light available.
All of his figures are hand painted and he will sometimes modify them himself with a paintbrush to suit whatever image he’s trying to shoot. He uses toothpicks and glue to position the figures.
Boffoli states a lot of his inspiration on this page of his website: https://www.bigappetites.net/series

Tiny world photographer #2: Matthew Albanese
https://www.matthewalbanese.com/gallery
Born in New Jersey in 1983, Albanese had a fascination with creating tiny sets on tabletops after being inspired by film as a child, and he went on to get a  Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography at the State University of New York.
He’s now more widely defined as an artist, and he creates these crazily detailed tiny little landscapes that you can hardly believe are not real. E.g:
Tumblr media
He even makes short YouTube videos giving behind the scenes information. The link for the video on this particular image titled ‘Patterns of Interference’ is: https://youtu.be/Do2qJErLRdA
As you can see in this video, Albanese fills a tray balanced at a perfectly straight angle with a black solution, and then uses a dropper to place droplets of petrol-like rainbow spools. The trees are actually quite far from the tray and that is what creates this strong vertical imposing angle.
Albanese makes many different kinds of sets including fantasy ones such as ‘Sugarland’, but I personally find his landscape images more impressive, especially images such as ‘Wildfire’:

The behind the scenes images for this are so detailed and thought out, and the fire looked so real I had no idea how he did it. From these images he seems to be using a large softbox for diffused light.
Albanese also has a book: https://lazydog.eu/product/matthew-albanese-strange-world/ that is on sale for €27.00, or £24.

Tiny worlds Research
What is miniature Photography?
Miniature Photography is a form of photography that mixes the real with the surreal. It takes small objects and integrates them into the real world.
Examples of miniature photography

Some photographers I have looked at
Christopher Boffoli
https://www.bigappetites.net
Christopher Boffoli is a Seattle based fine art photographer, photojournalist, independent filmmaker, and journalist.
Quote from project
“The genesis of my Big Appetites series of fine art photographs was in a lot of the media I was exposed to as a child. There were so many films and television shows that exploited both the dramatic and comedy potential
I think it is especially resonant with children because as a child you live in an adult world that is out of scale with your body and proportions. And you constantly exercise your imagination around a world of toys that are further out of scale.”

Slinkachu
A London based Photographer has been placing his miniature people on the streets of cities around the world since 2006. His work involves remodelling and painting Model train set characters and placing them in city streets. His work aims to encourage people to stop and experience the world around them. Too often people are busy rushing around and not living in the moment. I think the current world situation has shown how precious time is.

Tatsuya Tanaka
an art director/miniature photographer based in Kagoshima. A website he has been updating “MINIATURE CALENDAR,” became popular among Internet users.

Tiny Worlds
For our final block of NQ photography we have to research our new project which is miniature photography. This is a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is made to look like a photograph of a miniature scale model. I found this video whilst doing my research and found it very interesting the way he captures his photographs.
This is the two photographers I have researched:
Christopher Boffoli
Christopher Boffoli is a fine art photographer, photojournalist, filmmaker, and journalist based in Seattle, Washington. He is best known for his "Big Appetites" photographs series, which is detailed human figures that pose in real food environments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Beecroft
Dan Beecroft is an English photographer and is now based in Essex. He is self taught in photography and photo post-processing software techniques. Beecroft’s images are awards winning and have been published in national newspapers, magazines and books. He has also had work shown in exhibitions.
