Glorious Blythdunes, the French-style Palm Beach showplace of Jayne Wrightsman, doyen of New York society. Throughout her life, Mrs. Wrightsman was an avid collector of decorative arts from the ancien régime, amassing the finest private collection in the United States. Naturally then, when designing and decorating her new home, she retained the greatest tastemakers, including Stéphane Boudin, Henri Samuel and the Paris based firm Denning & Fourcade. Panels of hand-painted Chinese rice paper cover the walls of the drawing room at Svindersvik, in Sweden, designed by architect Carl Harleman as the summer home of the much-traveled merchant Claes Grill. The furniture is late Gustavian, and a blue-and-white stove was added despite Svindersvik being a summer house. The World of Interiors, February 1987.

To mark the sad passing of Pierre Bergé in St Remy de Provence yesterday, and noting the end of an era, I thought I would post the interior of his duplex apartment designed by Francois Joseph Graf. Bergè was a highly successful industrialist and an iconic collector as well as an influential patron of the arts. He was the business and life time partner of Yves Saint Laurent. I have always loved the 18th Century hand painted Chinese wall paper of their dining room, swipe to the left to see a close up of the peacocks. The quality of the painting is quite superb. Scott-Land. After a visit to family in Scotland, broke the journey back down south with a day at Sir Walter Scott's lavishly eccentric passion-project, Abbotsford, in the Scottish Borders. Ivanhoe and The Talisman were two of my favourite books as a child, and I'd long wanted to visit this marvellous Scottish Baronial "flibbertigibbet of a house", as Scott called it, built on the proceeds of his novels and filled with arms, armour, antiquarian oddments and curiosities, and of course books, wonderful books. The library in particular is testament to a marvellously magpie mind: the titles range from books on Scottish history to folklore and the occult, Rosicrucianism, witchcraft, architecture, horticulture, geography, chivalry, ballads and fairytales.
