During the main quests, this appears p often. It literally means "Jin's Journey":

But the kanji for "Jin" -- 仁 -- also means "benevolence," emphasizing a respect for humanity. So 仁之道, while it means "Jin's Journey," can also be read as "the path/way of benevolence."

He isn't following the bushido, or 武士道，the way of the warrior/samurai, but rather 仁之道, the way of benevolence, a path that diverts sharply from the "honor" that samurai follow.

ghhh i am just. sinophobia its fucking everywhere on the western internet it is just SO widespread and accepted. and even when people aren't actively sinophobic they're just utterly ignorant about. any aspect of chinese (hell, even pretty much all asian) culture and i never see people even ATTEMPTING to learn about it. i have not met a single white person who has pronounced my last name correctly. one of the major problems i find with online discourse about antagonistic characters and storylines sourcing from novels is that some people cant see past what is said to what is meant- and that other people can, but in their perception of the implied lore, make overdue assumptions of plot and character.

for example: in svsss, it is heavily implied that qiu jianluo s/a'ed the original shen qingqiu, thus shaping his outlook on society in general: females are safe, males are not. this leads to point against him in the form of his favouritism for ning yingying, the only (afaik) female qing jing disciple and his habit of finding comfort in brothels. this is misconstrued by the original protagonist in the novel pidw, leading to a false misconception held by our protagonist, shen yuan, that shen qingqiu is a lecherous paedophile.

as the reader, there are a number of context clues given to tell us how that is not the case-- mostly found in the extras-- and are meant to challenge the worldview, make us realize that like shen yuan, we as the audience only know as much as the author will tell us. did shen jiu hate luo binghe specifically because his name reminded him of qiu jianluo? was he jealous of the potential luo binghe had? or was he merely looking for a target to take his anger out on?

it is not mentioned, therefore we do not know, and should not make assumptions on the canon behaviour of this character towards someone else.

however, this is often not understood by the overall fandom: either they completely look past the context clues that tell us, this character is more than they seem and instead jump straight to demonization without first considering context and setting, or they overcompensate for someone by making excuses to justify behaviour we do not have explanations for.

this is the reason why we have people who constantly demean and bully others in fandom: they cannot read or think for themselves past what is clearly shown to them and refuse to challenge the idea that the author may be deliberately feeding unreliable information to make a more interesting story, and it doesnt help that there are people attempting to justify behaviour that is specifically written to be bad.

reading books translated to chinese got me like PLEASE let me be your proofreader PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

#uhhhh me #they do a good job but at a point it also becomes abundantly clear the translator doesn't know english to the intricate level #'blood drains from her face' gets translated to 'she's bleeding from her face'#also. taking the translator gently by the shoulders. you do NOT need to translate every instance of 'well' and 'um' and 'uh'#you should know this. we don't talk like that in chinese.#i know translating is hard bc u have to value accuracy but u also have to value flow #i certainly can't do it. my chinese vocab is shit #but that's why i just want to be the consultant. i can point to bits and be like 'that's not what it means'#some sentences got translated to the opposite of the original text and i'm silently yowling #PLEASE. I CAN HELP. I CAN BE YOUR PROOFREADER.

when at the library today i picked up a book abt typography to pick up some more theoretical skills there and to no one's surprise it pretended that european languages were the only languages in the world which like whatever i'll still learn what principles it has to teach and then try to reverse-engineer applications to cn font design based on what i know.

despite not trusting the english-language resources available online to be as in-depth or technical as i desire, i got curious and googled "chinese typographic design" anyway n scrolling through the introduction to the first result, you can kind of tell it's not written with a chinese-speaking audience in mind, or at the very least an audience with some semblance of chinese cultural sensitivities bc its section headed by the words "navigating the simplified and traditional divide" goes on to basically say it's an Aesthetic Decision which. well. is certainly a way to pretend you're avoiding politics.

#mostly you get the impression bc one of the first sections is like 'so how do chinese words work?'#and goes on to explain the idea of radicals and components n stuff and it's like If You Knew Literally Any Chinese #even as a foreigner starting to learn you'd understand the concept of semantic radicals #the worm speaks #phrasing that heading as 'navigating a divide' feels like it's alluding to An Awareness of the political implications n stuff #which most people in the west are not actually aware of!! so then to go on and be like #'oh yeah simplified is like swiftly efficient and ~modern~ while traditional holds fast to its cultural roots from a bygone era'#like. this is some stares straight into the camera type shit to me. like you really didn't have to call us bygone y'know.#like i'd have been fine if they were like 'simplified is what's used in the mainland china n is thus used much more frequently'#'whereas traditional is used in taiwan hk and with older communities' like that's Fine you did it you Navigated The Divide #but if you frame it in terms of an aesthetic choice based in how ~modern~ or ~bygone~ you want to feel #then you're going to end up with people who are merely curious abt cn typography bc it's a very foreign language to them #who take that at face value. good lord #AND ALSO they have separate encodings in unicode. like just saying. they are also encoded differently and that's an important thing #you do not know how many times i've downloaded allegedly traditional cn fonts only to discover they expect simplified input #in order to display the glyphs which Are still designed as traditional to be fair but anyway. it's a nuisance.

i heard so many nice things about myself from my boss and manager today, it feels good ☺️

#my trial period is ending soon and we had a talk about prolonging my contract #i got a pay raise and they want to pay for a chinese course for me #and they talked about how they value me as an employee and how i am very detailed and learn well #and also how they like my personality and how well i work with the team #they said they like the energy i bring and my happy/positive way of seeing things #idk it was all very lovely???#it's my first employment contract (only had mandate contracts before) and i was stressed that it wouldn't work out #and the first month was really hard because everything was so new and people didn't really talk to me OR each other #so the atmosphere wasn't very relaxing #and i seriously thought about looking for a different job #but now it's so much better #and i hope it'll keep getting better #they even said i could go with them to the canton fair in autumn #so i could go to china for free haha wow #well we'll see but i'm satisfied for now! 😄#my post #personal

I love letting other people watch things first and then give feedback about it so I can gauge whether or not I want to spend time on it. Truly could not give fewer fucks about spoilers. If the story is good I will still have a fantastic time.

Every day is a culture shock

Bro ive been on the internet for how long and I'm still in a perpetual state of culture shock?

I feel insane when I hear that people don't take family roles or family duty as seriously as I do.

My best friend loves to send me posts of People complaining about family and we both look like

Oh that's crazy! They're not even defending the family honor and reputation from outsiders????? Literally insane!! Even if you hate your family, you still have to defend them from outsiders. What's even going on?

To us it's like instinct. Even if your parents are straight up evil, you still have access to connections and favors by virtue of your last name. You have to defend the last name so you can keep using that. It's not a common idea? CRAZY! And what about your younger generations? You want to ruin it for them too?

Despite being females, we are both the firstborn son of our households. And then we go online and nobody knows wtf we're talking about

Wtf you mean you're the oldest and you're not at least the firstborn daughter? It comes with birth. You don't have any of those duties? Then what do you do?

Like obv were not robots. I have a lot of friends that didn't do some of their duties. Whether they disagreed or were lazy or just didn't want to, the word "duty" is always there. "That duty was stupid so I didn't do it". Fair. Your choice.

Like I earned my right that when we argue I can say he's "being cringe". I earned my right to argue actually. I earned this by repeatedly demonstrating responsibility, maturity, and correct priorities.

Dude that girl said this sounds like child abuse and I was like dawg wtf are you talking about 💀 your parents don't let you earn standing? Do they even love you? (That was mainly ego. She insulted my family so I tried to as well).

I'm guilty of growing up in a mixed asian society. My best friend grew up also In a mixed Asian society but a different one. In mine, the largest groups were Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Korean followed by every other kind of Asian.

Her area's largest groups were japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian followed by every other kind of Asian.

So it's kinda different but close enough. She knows how to eat with her hands and I know how to eat with chopsticks. We all celebrate 2 kinds of lunar new year. One by the south asian lunar calendar and one by the east Asian lunar calendar (don't ask, I don't know why we have 2 lunar calendars. You would think there's only 1?)

Both our areas, aunties will scold you if they hear you talk disrespectfully to your parents. Both our areas people will look down on you for not knowing your home language. Both our areas, the elders expect proper acknowledgement.

There are differences too. In my area, those who disrespect you must be disrespected In return. It's an offense to your family that they think they are allowed to disrespect you. In her area, the disrespect will happen but not to the face. You have to show you're from a better family. Here you have to show you are aware of the bullshit and you won't let it slide. I think its a difference between acting on behalf of your family vs acting with permission from your family. That's my speculation.

When teachers at my school said "grades don't matter" we said "then don't grade us? Liar". When teachers at her school said that they said "we understand, thank you for telling us" and then told their parents and the parents filed a report against the teachers for intentional misleading and sabotage.

The levels or respect and politeness and what kinds of actions imply what about your family were a culture shock to me. When I visit her, I have to adjust to be a lot more mellow and polite than I have to show here. Here, the elders accept any proper acknowledgement like "hi grandma" is fine. Even "hello" or a wave is fine. There, elders expect you to acknowledge them according to their culture. I personally fuck this up so bad because I don't even know who they are so i just copy what my friend is doing. And then I get the relation wrong and then they stare at me. Sometimes I'm lucky.

Over here, we don't really know too many people. It's not as social. Where she lives, everyone knows everyone.

I don't know how to describe this melding aside from just generally "asian" .

I log on to the internet and there's no shared culture except for speaking English 🤣 HAH.

disney really took a story about a girl who's very much 'like the other girls' (starting the ballad sighing at her loom) braving battle for the sake of her father, and aside from discarding that theme, also directly spits on the face of that theme by making the most important scene in the movie one where she needlessly chops off her hair, desecrating the body her parents gave her and destroying something deeply culturally important that's directly related to loyalty to parents lol
