Lograste superar a tu ex? Cómo está tu hurón? sigues comiendo tortrix chileros? aún tienes la piñata que te regalé? sigues siendo mejor que yo en el cubo rubik? ajsjaj espero hayas logrado todo lo que un día me contaste, te quiero mucho enserio

Day 3
Slept in. Maybe 12 hours. It was glorious. Had a slow start to our day. We went over to Cafe Cafe Guatemala for breakfast. Cute flowers, and a neon sign declaring “chilero” — an Instagram moment and an Instagram phrase meaning awesome, beautiful or cool.
An encounter with two German women from the Earth Lodge again. Set next to two more Germans — and a brief debate over their origin. I still think the woman was Scandinavian. We shared a French Press coffee and a green juice blend while we waited for our crepes.
A Pepian for Meag, including chicken and squash, and a more mellow eggs and cheese for me. As always I was super impressed by the black beans.
We took a moment to return to the hotel to shower and relax before we headed out to climb the Hill of the Cross. It was very hot, and I was a baby. We stopped on the approach to get a shaved ice drink. My order was translated by Meag into, “he’ll have the same as that kid .” It was a tomato cocktail base, with lime, a tomato syrup, seasoning blends, something like Worchester sauce, and mango. It made me very happy and carried me through the climb.
The first bit really caught me and I was huffing and puffing. Antigua is at almost the same elevation as Denver!
At the top we took in a gorgeous view of city. We could point at the many places we had been — including the previous nights roof top bar. It was a beautiful view.
We walked back into the city and stopped at a small cafe with a garden. We had a Jamaica tea, a iced coffee and a cappuccino as well as barracha — a Guatemalan rum cake. The courtyard garden was beautiful. We both stopped for photos of flowers, and there were turtles swimming in the fountain.
We headed next to a torteria. Along the way we passed many slices of life — a dad stopping his scooter to buy cotton candy for his kid from a passing vendor, folks walking the smallest chihuahuas I’d ever seen and a European tourist whose earrings Meag complimented.
Lunch at the torteria was incredible. The walls were paint a pristine white, and sacks of corn were stacked carefully in a corner. A lazy breeze strolled in and out causing the colorful mobiles of birds and fruit to dance above us.
I had a wonderful tortilla con chorizo and Meag had hilaches — a beef and tomato stew with cheese. Our micheladas were enormous but delicious.
I was so full I thought I’d keel over but we headed to the Santo Domingo hotel and museum next. It was one of the most fancy and gorgeous hotels I’ve ever seen. The entryway had beautiful aqueducts watering the vibrant plant life. We walked through a small gallery from a modern Guatemalan artist. One painting evoked dissections, doll parts and the commercialiZation of bodies.
Their enormous courtyard had more art, and many Scarlet Macaws. They were beautiful but uninterested in us. The space had many museums and we first approached the remains of the cathedral. A bell played out a dolorous drone beneath the canopy stretched wide to recreate the lost roof.
We entered crypts to see the remains of unknown priests, read of hidden cults of candelabras whose religion was neither Catholic nor syncretic. We saw art left behind when this Cathedral too was reclaimed by the earth.
Nestled in the history was a fancifully inappropriate chocolatier whose prices insisted we were in a exclusive and boutique place. We visited the other exhibits — one a contract of ancient Mayan art with a recreation of modern glass. A censure with a snake motif next to a glass serpent whose mouth clenched a foaming. A nude woman stretched long on her belly, all glass curves next to a squat stoneware woman whose stubby legs curled back at the knee.
The theme continued in the next exhibit where pictures of old Antigua contrasted with the new showed the rapid modernity.
We wandered around the sprawling compound and fought modern problems — ATMs, bank service reps and the downstream effects of a lunch too big. We walked next to a chocolate museum where we sampled dark chocolate and cacao husk tea before a brief respite in our hotel. We played Yahtzee on our roof top terrace drinking Gallo and watching the sun fade behind the volcanos.
Our next outing was a food tour — led by Alejandra. We met fellow food tourists, a woman from New Jersey who’d been cramming the whole country into a long weekend, and a couple from Miami who’d just finished a volcano hike.
Our first stop outside the city included shuco — a spin on hot dogs brought home from Guatemalan immigrants to the United States. Then gringas — a taco like food named for being white and plain. Then a churro like dessert washed down with an elote based horchata.
A brief stop to pee and then we were off to the other side of Antigua on the site of the second capital, one destroyed in a great flood of water from the Agua Volcano. There we sat in a small tortilla restaurant. I had chorizo and languica. I pet a dog and everyone told me not to.
We drank many different kinds of rum and people told their travel stories. Already way past the end of the tour we jetted off to the next place. There we ate sandwiches on what seemed like giant croissants. Mine had pork and tasted of perfectly grilled bread.
We drank hot chocolate and Ale told us it beat the hell out of that Hershey shit. We learned about sea horses in the Bahamas. We found a checklist item for Meag at a stall nearby — fried and stuffed plantains. Back into the van and quick good byes before Meag and I climbed the tight spiral staircase to the roof of our hotel.
We nestled in the like warm hot tub and talked about the day and pointed to the place we knew a volcano to be but could not see.
