Excerpt: Ch. 1
“Agent Miller, I have to say I was very surprised to find out that you would be joining us,” Jackson said. “We’re so glad you could make it.”
“Glad to be here,” Nathan said politely.
Dominic continued to make polite small talk with Jackson. Never having been one for pleasantries, Nathan tuned them out and scanned the room, noting who was working in the facility and who was a trainee. Which of the trainees were just killing time until the talk, and which ones were wrapped up in their work. Two trainees were already sitting in the front row, both leaning over the same notebook propped up between them, with a third sitting just behind them, leaned forward to speak quietly with them. The only other person in the front row was a young brunette woman sitting at the end, legs stretched out and arms crossed, head leaned back and eyes closed. She probably didn't even know there was anything going on in this room today. A couple other trainees were scattered throughout the chairs, some laughing together and others focused intently on the two raised chairs in the front, as though staring at them would make the session begin sooner.
"But we can get one if you want," Jackson said.
“Sorry?" Nathan’s attention snapped back to the agent.
Jackson turned his head to give Nathan a strange look while Dominic laughed. "I said we wanted to keep it casual, so we just put a couple of chairs on the stage. We decided against pulling out a podium, but we can get one for you if you want.”
“No, it’s fine,” Dominic said, resting a hand on Nathan’s shoulder. “Ignore him. He’s not good at human interaction.”
Nathan roughly shook Dominic’s hand off and shot him a half-hearted glare. “So when are we getting started?” Nathan asked, turning back to Jackson.
Jackson looked between them, apparently amused at the interaction, before answering. “In about ten minutes, the rest of the group should be in here. Whenever most of the kids get in here I'll go up and introduce you. The recruits were pretty excited when we told them that you’d both be joining us.”
Nathan thought he was just being polite, but it only took about seven more minutes for the room to fill. A few trainees were even left standing along the back wall or sitting in the aisles on either side.
"Didn't expect this much of a turn out," Nathan muttered under his breath.
Jackson laughed and clapped him on the shoulder, which Nathan shrugged off habitually. “Are you kidding? You two had a damn near perfect record in violent crimes. You’re practically celebrities around here.” With that, Jackson walked up to the stage and picked up the microphone that was sitting on one of the chairs. “I'm glad you all could make it," he said, pausing as if he expected some kind of response that he didn’t get. "You all hear me talk enough, so I'll skip the speech and get right to it. Our guest speakers today worked together in the violent crimes division of the FBI for nearly two decades, mostly chasing down serial killers and hired guns. Since then one of them has retired, and the other has transferred to the white collar division. But both of them have generously agreed to come out today and answer any of your questions about their experiences in the field and past cases. So now, here are my good friends and colleagues, Senior Special Agents Dominic Greerson and Nathan Miller.”
Nathan forced a smile as he followed Dominic onto the stage and dropped into the chair beside the older man, doing his best to ignore the applause from the gathered group.
“How are you all doing today?” Dominic asked into the microphone. He got several excited though indistinguishable responses. “Alright, well let’s just jump right into it. Who has a question? Oh, that’s more than I was expecting.”
About two dozen hands immediately went into the air. One of them belonged to one of the two trainees that Nathan had seen sitting in the front row. He was surprised to see that another belonged to the young woman sitting on the end, whom Nathan had thought to be asleep and unaware of the event.
"Alright, let's start in the back," Dominic said, pointing over the heads of most of the group. "You there in the corner.”
The man stood and accepted the microphone that was extended to him by one the staff walking along the aisles. ”How did you both start working with the FBI?" He finally asked.
Dominic looked to Nathan for a second, eyebrows raised in a silent question. In answer, Nathan took the microphone from him to answer first. “Well, since I was a kid I wanted to be in law enforcement,” he said. “My father was a police officer in Baton Rouge. So I decided to become a police officer. I worked my way up to homicide detective, and after that,” he hesitated a moment, ignoring the feel of Dominic’s eyes burning into the side of his head, but just shrugged and finished the story as quickly and cleanly as he could. “I guess the FBI was just the next logical step for me. Dom?” He added, handing the microphone back to his former partner. The questions went on that way for about an hour, mostly asking about each of their respective backgrounds in the FBI, and a few questions about specific cases they had worked. Several questions were asked about the Phantom Fires, which Nathan answered as carefully as he could.
"What was it like the first time you had to tell a victim's family that they were dead?" Asked a young trainee in the front row. She looked barely old enough to buy alcohol, but with the kind of determination in her eyes and voice that Nathan’d had when he was just starting out in the Bureau.
Nathan still remembered that moment perfectly. He held his hand out for the microphone. Dominic handed it over and leaned back in his chair. “When I was a detective, usually my partner at the time or another police officer made the call. The first time I had to tell a woman that her husband was dead, it was my first case with the Bureau,” Nathan said. He gave a wry smile and gestured to Dominic. “This guy said I had to be the one to tell her. Of course, I didn't want to do it; not on my first case.”
“It builds character,” Dominic said loud enough to be heard even without the microphone.
"That's a lie,” Nathan said without missing a beat or even glancing at his former partner. A few people laughed with him.
"Do you ever get used to it?" The girl asked.
"No," Nathan said. He glanced around at the subdued crowd before looking back at her, finally raising the microphone again to speak into the silent room. “You'll learn what to say, and how long to keep your mouth shut before you say it. But you will never get used to it. And you shouldn’t.”
Nathan paused in the silence and glanced at Dominic. The older man just gave him a smile and shrugged one shoulder; a silent confirmation. Nathan turned back to the girl. “You know what Agent Greerson said to me when I asked him that same question? He looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘The day when that becomes easy, the day when you can look into a woman's eyes, tell her that she's a widow, watch her break down in tears, and not feel a thing, you hand in your badge and walk away.’” Nathan leaned back in his chair and looked out at the rest of the room.
Dominic’s voice echoed through the room even without the microphone, carrying over the silence. “When you lose what makes you human, you lose what makes you a good agent,” he said. Nathan remembered the hardened look in Dominic’s eyes when he’d said those same words to him decades ago. He could swear he felt that same hardened gaze boring into the side of his head, but didn’t look over to Cath the man’s eyes. The silence lingered for a long moment before Dominic spoke again. “I think we have time for just one more question.”
A couple hands raised in the air, one belonging to the woman down at the end of the front row, the one that had appeared to be asleep in her chair before the talk.
“Front row on the end there,” Nathan said, gesturing to her. He ignored the look he got from Greerson, who had been taking the initiative the entire session of leading the conversation and choosing the questions. The woman had been intently listening to every question asked and every answer given. She’d raised her hand at every point that Greerson was selecting someone to ask a question. She also just had a look in her eyes that made Nathan feel slightly off balance, and he couldn’t pinpoint why. Maybe it was the confidence clear in her gaze that never left the stage, or how everyone else was either typing away on laptops or scribbling in a notebook, while this woman just sat unmoving, attention never wavering, and yet Nathan had no doubt that she could recite back every question and answer given during the last hour verbatim.
The woman stood up and looked from Dominic to Nathan with all the confidence of someone who knew what she was talking about, and didn't give a damn who disagreed with her. She didn’t wait to be brought a microphone before she spoke, but still her voice carried.
"Where's Jessica Langer?" The woman asked.
Nathan's confident demeanor didn’t falter—he was too practiced for that—but he instinctively tensed at the question. He could feel tension rolling off of Dominic in waves, but didn’t dare turn to look at him. The small gesture would give away too much information. It would let this would-be agent know that she was right; that she knew something that only a handful of people knew. That only a handful of people should ever know.
Nathan was thankfully saved the trouble of answering when the silence was broken by someone laughing from the back row.
"Dead," someone called out. "Killed by the Phantoms."
"Maybe you should know what you're talking about before you open your mouth," another person yelled. More laughs broke out through the room, but still the brunette never broke eye contact with Nathan.
"Your friend's right," Dominic finally said. His laugh only sounded slightly forced, and Nathan wondered if the woman could tell. It took him all of half a second to decide that she could. ”Jessica Langer died in a Phantom Fire fifteen years ago. You should read your case files more carefully."
The young woman shifted her gaze to Dominic, the side of her mouth quirking up just slightly, barely noticeable. She knew that Dominic was lying. Nathan didn't know how in the hell she knew that Jessica Langer was alive, but somehow she knew it. Still, the woman didn't call his bluff right there. She only nodded and kept that confident smirk on her face. "Sorry," she said, sitting back down. Her gaze met Nathan’s again for a moment. ”My mistake."
As soon as she sat back down, Jackson jumped onto the stage. Dominic stood and handed the microphone back to him. "That's all the time we have for questions," Jackson said. "Thank you, Agents Greerson and Miller, for joining us today."
His statement was followed by a warm applause from the group as Nathan followed Dominic from the stage. He looked around for the young woman, but could already see her retreating out the double doors, already engulfed in a sea of students leaving the auditorium.
"Hey, Jackson," he heard Dominic saying in a forced casual tone. "Who was that?”

Smooth Criminal
The days passed by quickly, and soon enough it was Thursday. Emily barely noticed her first week of employment go through her, mostly because she has been so busy trying to get a footing of her new teaching career, all in the while juggling a burden in form of a parent and the set-up of an apartment.
All on her own, mind you.
She sure felt tired, but the weekend was impending, and she surely wouldn’t mind sleeping the Sunday away. It was cheap entertainment, after all.
The woman was jolted back from her thoughts by a voice coming from behind her back: “Hey, Emily.”
“Oh, hi, Zig!” She smiled at him. “I don’t see you since the meeting.”
“Yeah, I use my lunch time to have my office hours, but my students decided to give me a reprieve today.” His pearly whites flashed at her. “How are you doing, Emily? We barely had any time to talk these last few days.”
Zigmund Ortega. Only brother to four sisters. The bad boy of the Hartfeld Knights. Connecticut’s Double Threat. He was a friend from college of Emily’s, a dear one at that. They met back on her freshman year, when he worked as a barista on her favorite coffeeshop on campus.
Zig was the first recipient to the Second Chance Scholarship Program, sponsored by the now-former-NFL player and current Senator for Maine, Christopher Powell. As students, she and Chris were close friends, and when he decided to put forward Zig as a test student for the endowment.
Since Chris’ choice was due much to her own insistence, Emily felt highly-responsible about the young man. While she admits to her own hovering, it did forge a lasting relationship between them.
After Graduation, not unlike most of her relations back then, the friendship between them faded slowly, both immersed in their own lives. However, she did know that he majored in Mathematics, achieving his degree with honors and high praise amongst the New English academic community.
“I’m fine. I’m a little overwhelmed with the move and New York City, but I’m really pumped up.” Her lips turned up and her eyes shone. “It’s my first experience as a teacher. I won’t lie, it has been really hard, but I’m loving it so far!”
“Heh, that’s the feeling, alright. It’s that kind of profession you give your all, and it’s so worth it!” He smirked in response. “But, tell me, why Mrs. Sterling chose this school out of all others to teach?”
Her expression dimmed. “I’m Ms. Harper, now. Nathan and I got divorced back on Spring.”
The hazel eyes widened. The man sure wasn’t expecting that. “Jeez, Em, I’m sorry. I didn’t know!”
“Don’t worry. It’s not like it was on the papers or anything. We agreed we preferred to keep it discreet.” The redhead dismissed. “But tell me, Mr. Dean’s List, I could ask you the same question. You could teach anywhere you wanted. Why Lydia Child?”
“Well, sure I could teach at some college or at that Lanes prep school. Heck, I sure would earn a lot more cash than I do here.” He pondered. “But, those students have a whole bunch of opportunities. Here in Rosewood Creek, we’re all these kids got. I just feel I’m more needed here than anywhere else.”
“That’s… that’s very noble of you.” Emily said, surprised and admired with his reasoning. “I’m sure you’re very appreciated around here. I mean, I don’t interact much with the younger pupils, but the GED students love your classes, and the other teachers all seem to sing you praise in the halls.”
Zig let out a self-conscious laugh. “I don’t do this for being praised.”
The woman’s head nodded. “I know. That doesn’t mean you don’t deserve it.”
“I suppose it’s nice to be recognized for it.” He conceded.
Before long, the bell rings. “Well, that’s me.” The redhead said.
“I’ll see you around, then.” He responded.
She beamed at him. “You sure will.”
Queenie Rhodes was a rightful mess.
With the hair tied on a wide, straight bun on top of her head, a muddy-colored dress she borrowed from her daughter’s bland wardrobe and no make-up whatsoever, she looked just like some Human Sciences professor.
It was a necessary evil, however, as she had to blend in the crowd that attended Columbia’s library.
She strutted confidently to the reference desk and said to the librarian: “Good morning. Could you tell me where the metaphysics books are located at?”
“It’s all the way in the back, to your left.” The aide pointed. “Do you want me to accompany you?”
“There’s no need, thank you.” The older woman smiled and walked away.
Queenie walked over to the aisle, her short heels tapping on the sleek floor. The wide windows of Butler Library let in the soft sunlight from the outside, as the day was overcast.
Her sources say that particular area of the library was used for all sorts of shady deals and exchanges. It didn’t come as a surprise, as the place had little attendance, and its positioning within the building did not favor natural lightning.
She found a table and sat next to a young girl, dressed on a heavy coat and fidgeting.
“Did you bring it?” The girl anxiously asked.
Queenie takes the small vial off her book bag and hands it over to the girl. “Twenty doses of focus pills. Two hundred dollars.”
She slides two hundred-dollar bills, which Queenie shoves on the bag. The girl pops a pill and the woman slides the chair back again and stand up to leave.
It was way too easy to sell those stressed students some sleeping pills as amphetamine. Not only that particular brand of sleep medicine was much cheaper than Adderall, it also took weeks for them to realize the problem was the drugs, not the fact they were only too tired for it to work.
By then, they would have forgotten all about her, and they wouldn’t be able to complain.
As she was leaving, she stopped by the reference desk. “Hey, miss? I saw a girl passed out on the desk over at the back.”
The librarian huffed, stressed. “Not this again! Thank you, ma’am, I’ll take care of it.”
Emily unlocked the front door of her apartment and announced, a little too loud for such a small place: “Mom! I’m home!”
As she placed her bag on the kitchen counter, her mother, laid on the couch reading a fashion magazine, greeted her: “Hey, honey. How’s work today?”
“Just fine.” She commented, as she walks into the kitchen. “I had lunch with Zig today.”
“Oh, that hunky friend of yours from college, right?” The older woman asks, captiously. “Shame he ends up on such a filthy place!”
“We ended up in ‘such a filthy place’, as you so gracefully put it.” The redhaired points out, rather annoyed. “It’s not shameful. And, in any case, Zig works at Rosewood Creek by choice.”
“Work dignifies man, and all that crap, I know.” Queenie dismissed. “Why would someone in their right mind choose to work in Uptown Manhattan?”
“He’s a very talented teacher, mom. He thinks the children here would benefit more than the spoilt brats at Park Avenue.” She counters. “I don’t want to have this discussion again with you. How was your day?”
“I picked up the groceries like you asked me to.” She responded.
“And where’s the change?” Emily asks, defying.
“There was no change. The money you left me was short.” The older woman responded, closing her magazine and walking over to the kitchen.
The daughter shook her head. “Mom, there’s no way the money I gave you wasn’t enough for food.”
“Ugh, fine!” Queenie pulled a twenty-dollar bill from her bra. “Here.”
The youngest looked at the money and at the woman. “Are you absolutely sure that’s all?”
“Yes, Emily!” She demeans. “This is all.”
The ginger took the bill and placed it on the purse with a cautious look to the woman. The matriarch held the poker face, mostly because there was thirty more dollars of change she pocketed.
Instead, the woman said: “What’s for dinner?”

To he honest, the back of a closed veterinary clinic wasn’t even on Alec’s Top 10 List of Weird Places to Run A Con From.  They didn’t even have to break in (which disappointed Parker) and he could admit his heart lurched when the back door was opened by a somber faced man in a tan sheriff’s uniform.
Nate of course didn’t miss a beat, pulling an obnoxious persona out of thin air.  “You’re not Clancy!” He barked, wagging a finger at the sheriff.  “Where is that no good son of a pickle?  I swear, if he gave me drunk directions again...Cookie!  Cookie, didn’t I say he sounded drunk?”
“Oh yeah!” Sophie continued, soft voice gone nasal and sharp.  “Lemme call him, maybe he’s sobered up by now….”
The sheriff held up a hand to cut her off.  “Very believable, but I know who you are, Mr. Ford.  Come in.”
Huh.
That was not at all expected, but the man wasn’t giving off any of the classic ‘Gonna do some arresting tonight’ vibes.  His hand wasn’t on his gun and though he had clearly pegged Eliot as the most physically threatening he wasn’t posturing.
The next surprise came when they actually entered the animal clinic and found it packed with teenagers - exhausted looking teenagers - and a handful of adults.  Around the room, Alec could see soda cans, pizza boxes and sleeping bags, clear signs that this was being used as a makeshift shelter.
What the hell was happening here?
“Peter,” Nate said, addressing a man of about Eliot’s age with a goatee and lean, handsome features.  “You mentioned something about a self styled fascist flooding your town with guns and trying to murder children.”
“Nate,” the man, Peter, replied.  “I did and there is indeed a genocidal geriatric running around.  Rumors put you running a team of Robin Hoods...I thought there’s be more of you after hearing about San Lorenzo.”
“We’re more than capable as is,” Sophie said with one of her charming, reassuring smiles.
“Spencer.”
The name was spoken by a slim, bearded man in a leather jacket and Alce was shocked to see that Eliot didn’t look annoyed.
“Argent,” Eliot replied, taking a few steps forward and exchanging one of those forearm gripping warrior handshakes with the other man.  “What’s happening that you can’t handle?”
Okay, so Eliot respected this guy.  Which meant the situation was probably even more dire than anticipated.
Argent sighed.  “My father is organizing Hunters who don’t follow the code in an attempt to wipe out every supernatural being in Beacon Hills.  He’s arming civilians, feeding their fear and innocents have already died.”
“Also there’s an ancient shapeshifter called and Anuk-Ite running around that enhances fear and hate and breeds violence because that’s its idea of a Country Kitchen Buffet,” a pale, dark haired young man added, making Argent grimace and incline his head in agreement.
Before they could continue, Alec held up a finger.  “I’m sorry, Supernatural beings?  Hunters?  Shape shifters?  Are Sam and Dean gonna pop out of the closet next...and that wasn’t a double entendre though Dean and Castile do give me reason to think maybe...Nevermind.”
“That show has a lot of inaccuracies,” a grumpy looking man who could play Superman on a CW show (if he ever was introduced to a razor) muttered.
“Really?  That’s the problem you have with...What the hell?!”
Around the room, eyes began to glow, golds, blue and crimson.
“Look, we don’t really have time to ease you into the whole Werewolves exist thing ns for that I’m sorry,” a young Latino with a kind face and those red eyes said.  His eyes returned to a warm brown as he continued, “We’re real, we’re in danger and we could use your help.”
Parker jabbed a ginger into Eliot’s ribs. “You knew!” She accused, not sounding nearly freaked out enough.
Actually, Nate and Sophie were taking things in stride too and Eliot merely nodded.  “I knew.”
“Right!” Nate said, calling everyone’s attention.  “I’m going to need a full briefing on the situation, also names and abilities as I assume most of you won’t sit on the sidelines while we’re working.”
“Scott McCall, I’m an Alpha,” said the handsome Latino kid.
The pretty redhead spoke next.  “Lydia Martin, Banshee.”
“Stiles Stilinski, human,” said the fast talker and Hardison glanced at the name badge the Sheriff wore.  His kid clearly.
“I’m a werecoyote.  Name’s Malia,” a leggy brunette said from where she was glaring at a burly boy.
“Kira Yukimura.  Kitsune,” the beautiful Japanese girl in Marvel leggings told them.
The rest of the introductions were just as fast.
“Isaac, werewolf.” The tall blond guy beside “Danny Mahealani, human.”
“Liam Dunbar, werewolf.” Small, younger guy in need of s haircut.   Burly was standing near him.  “Theo, chimera.”
“I’m Mason, human, and he’s Corey, a chameleon chimera.”  A young brother holding a book and the nervous looking kid huddled close to him.
Look up rich douchebag in the dictionary and you’d find, “Jackson, werewolf kanima.”
“Ethan, werewolf.” Another Abercrombie looking guy.
Furry Superman was, “Derek, werewolf.”
“Peter Hale,werewolf.” Nate’s acquaintance.
Eliot’s buddy was, “Chris Argent.”
“Melissa McCall.” Clearly Scott’s mom...and also very hot.
“Sheriff Noah Stilinski.” The sheriff.
“Deputy Jordan Parrish, hellhound.” Yet another model looking guy.
What was in the water?
“Okay, I’m Nate, this is Sophie, Eliot, Hardison and Parker.  Let’s go steal us a town’s sanity.”
TBC....

Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: How to watch, listen to the game
The Cleveland Browns will close out the 2016 NFL season with a visit to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers. Here is how to watch or listen to today’s game.
We’ve finally reached the final day of the 2016 NFL season, Browns fans.
In a few hours the Browns will head into an off-season that will be filled with more divisive draft talk than anyone can imagine.
But before we get that point there is still a game to be played as the Browns take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cleveland has not won in Pittsburgh since 2003 and since that victory have lost 23 of 26 games against the Steelers in a “rivalry” that has never really been a rivalry.
MORE FROM DAWG POUND DAILY Hue Jackson in attendance at Ohio State’s Pro Day4h ago Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett set as clear No. 1 overall pick8h ago Brock Osweiler could be Browns next bridge quarterback1 d ago Cleveland Browns: Josh Cribbs retires, remains a fan favorite in Cleveland1 d ago Cleveland Browns should draft a wide receiver at some point in the NFL Draft1 d ago A win today by the Browns would very likely cost the team the cheap jerseys from china top overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. A win would also give the false notion that it would give the Browns “momentum” heading into the 2017 season. But as we all saw in 2010, season-ending winning streaks have zero carryover into the next season.
Which is something that head wholesale jerseys coach Hue Jackson seems to understand.
“To finish the season winning two games, that is the best we can be. We can only play one more. If we can win it, that means we have won the last two,” Jackson said on Friday. “At the same time, if we don’t, I am not going to make a big deal of that either. I am going to make a big deal about finishing this game as well as we can and then all hands on deck.
“Let’s go fix this and get this team better. That is my main concern. We have to finish this game right. We have to play to win. We want to win. After that, we are going to let the 2016 season go, and we are going to move forward to bigger and better things.”

Cleveland Browns vs. Buffalo Bills: How to watch, listen to today’s game
The Cleveland Browns head east to face the Buffalo Bills still in search of their first win of the season. Here is how you can watch or listen to the game.
The Cleveland Browns are back at it today with just three games remaining for the team to pick up a win in the 2016 season.
The quest takes the Browns to Buffalo for a meeting with the Bills, losers of five of their past seven games.
The Bills come into the game with the NFL’s best rushing offense at 154.6 yards wholesale jerseys china per game, are averaging a league-high 5.4 yards per carry and lead the league with 24 rushing touchdowns.
That could prove to be problematic for a Cleveland defense that is 31st against the run
Despite the reality of what the stats reveal, linebacker Christian Kirksey says things are getting better.
“Yeah, I think we took some strides. Obviously, we are not where we want to be,” Kirksey cheap jerseys said on Friday. “We are just trying to clean things up, trying to eliminate players from having a big game or having 100-plus yards. Basically, we have to make sure we are in the right place at the right time in the right gaps.
“We just have to make sure we play as a defense and play cheap jerseys china together and swarm to the ball.”
Offensively, head coach Hue Jackson will stick with quarterback Robert Griffin III for another week, which should do wonders for an offense that has average 9.8 points per game over the past five games.
