El Centro de la Raza/Centilia Cultural Center

When I applied to the UCBI program all the way back in October 2019, I had my eyes set on working at El Centro de la Raza. I even wrote my cover letter to be tailored toward this organization. All I wanted to do in this internship was work with people of color, specifically Latinx people, and learn how to be apart of new communities. I ended up working under Enrique at the Centilia Cultural Center, and these were a valuable 3 months. While coordinating events wasn’t what I initially thought my time spent at El Centro would be about, I did learn a lot during my time there. 

I think my biggest challenge with El Centro was commuting to work everyday. I would spend about two hours every day going to and from beacon hill to my dorm, it was a little exhausting. However, the commute was worth it. I loved walking in the historical building every day and feeling just ever so slightly at home hearing Spanish music pumping from the food vendors speakers. 

I really appreciate Enrique for showing my the ropes the best he could. I was able to meet with multiple community and organizational leaders, and attend multiple community events where I was able to learn more about the community I was working in. I also think I was a pro in the making at sending out mass marketing emails. 

Sadly my time at Centilia was cut short and I was not able to realize the full potential of the projects i was working on. I am really grateful for the time i spent there and will hopefully be able to return one day.
