HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN COLTRANE Tenor Madness is a musical ensemble formed through the instigation of the Philadelphia Jazz Project for a Pop Up Concert at the Reading Terminal Market back in 2014. The group was led by late saxophonist and bandleader, Sam Reed and has featured a who’s who of Philadelphia area saxophonists, including Charles Cunningham, Tim Price, Elliott Levin, Carl Grubbs, Terry Lawson, Korey Riker, Yesseh Ali, Michael Pedicin, Larry McKenna, Josh Lee, Dylan Band, Gilberto Cruz, Pete Chavez and Julian Pressley. The name Tenor Madness is a tribute to the 1956 Sonny Rollins recording of the same name, that is most notable as being the only known recording featuring both saxophone giants, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. On Saturday afternoon, September 17, 2016, at East Park Reservoir in Fairmount Park, the gentlemen of Tenor Madness came together to honor John Coltrane as part of during an all day, outdoor celebration called, The Jazz Walk - Giant Steps. The group consisted of saxophonists, (the late) Sam Reed, Larry McKenna, Julian Pressley, (the late) Tim Price, Pete Chavez, Gilberto Cruz and (the late) Charles Cunningham (89 year old friend of John Coltrane's), as well as bassist, Kenny Davis and drummer Jeff Johnson. Re-Imagining Coltrane's Interstellar Space In September of 2016, we asked two artists, tenor saxophonist, Terry Lawson and drummer, Alan Nelson to take on the challenge of interpreting John Coltrane’s groundbreaking, 1967 album, entitled, "Interstellar Space.” Interstellar Space presents an unrelenting, torrent of sound produced by a duo of John Coltrane on tenor saxophone and percussion and Philadelphian, Rashied Ali on drums. Many critics and fans alike were uninterested in Coltrane's new direction. However, many young musicians all around the world were fascinated with the energy and the freedom that this new approach provided and would follow suit, expanding on many of Coltrane's ideas during the 1970s. Revisiting Celebrate Coltrane 2019 Honoring the day of Coltrane's birth, Philadelphia Jazz Project presents three FREE mixtapes created from performances during our special, CELEBRATE COLTRANE 2019 concerts. These recordings feature some of Philadelphia's finest musicians exploring and interpreting Coltrane's classic compositions and performing them in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, directly across the street from the Philadelphia John Coltrane House back in September of 2019. The artists recorded in the CELEBRATE COLTRANE 2019 mixtape series includes the legendary Philadelphia pianist and lifelong Coltrane devotee, Alfie Pollitt with his trio including drummer extraordinaire, Alan Nelson and the under-recognized bass wizard, Richard Hill. Also on the set was Jersey-based, Philly-born and bred saxophone colossus, Willie Williams along with his son Ace; a phenomenal and aspiring trumpet talent.
