I don’t often toot my own horn on here, but..... The Globe and Mail just published a glowing profile on my dad’s press! I’ve been doing editing and design work for him for almost 10 years, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of the family business.
This article is available in the print edition for today (February 29 2020). The above link is behind a paywall, but I’ve copied the article below the cut.
By Naben Ruthnum
The Shirley Jackson Award is one of the most prestigious prizes in horror, with recipients ranging from genre legends Stephen King and Neil Gaiman to literary crossover writers such as Emma Cline. In 2018, a Canadian publisher of horror fiction claimed their second Jackson. But you may never have heard of Undertow Publications, which is based in the small Ontario city of Pickering.
There are as many types of horror fiction as there are ways to be scared. The particular subgenre of horror that Undertow specializes in is “weird fiction”: a style that tends toward the high literary, enfolding the supernatural, tales of malaise in urban, rural and wild settings, and a sense of discomfort and eeriness that has more to do with atmosphere than reddened fangs.
While Undertow isn’t purely a one-man show, publisher Michael Kelly is the guiding acquiring and editorial eye on all books. “I always liked the literary sort of horror, weird fiction, and I wasn’t seeing it published.” As his inspirations, he cites the writers he was reading in 2009, around the time he started the press, "things like Arthur Machen, Oliver Onions, Walter De la Mare, Violet Paget.” Kelly was also reading Britain-based magazines such as Black Static and Supernatural Tales, pages that would introduce him to the authors he would eventually publish.
The press’s business operations began in his basement, and remain there, although the initial one-book-a-year output has grown to seven scheduled for 2020 and six planned for 2021. The prestigious small publishers of supernatural fiction that dot Britain and Ireland quickly recognized a peer in Kelly. Brian J. Showers, who runs Dublin’s Swan River Press, points to Kelly’s specific vision as a defining strength: “Michael Kelly guides Undertow with both taste and style, and with a dedication characteristic of only the very best small presses.”
Kelly, who is now focusing on Undertow full-time after his recent retirement from a 30-year career at the Toronto Star that ranged from the darkroom to syndicated sales, knew that keeping an eye on scale would be a crucial part of Undertow’s continued existence.
“I was reading stuff that really intrigued me in the small press, niche stuff, but there were only a couple of venues. I did my first anthology in 2009, and it was called Apparitions. Really – copies of the book were terrible. It was on very white, photocopy paper, done at one of those Espresso Book Machines – I knew a guy at McMaster who ran one. It was a bound book, but poorly bound.”
Despite the humble appearance of this first offering from a press that would soon be known for their beautifully designed and printed trade paperbacks, overseen by art director Vince Haig, Apparitions was nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award. The prestigious American award is well known to genre fans, and Undertow was quickly noticed by both readers and writers eager for a new venue for their weird fiction interests. But Kelly continued to grow the press slowly, guided by his own tastes and reading. Short-story collections – anthologies or single-author collections – form almost the entirety of Undertow’s output. One anthology series, Shadows and Tall Trees, has been going since the second year of the press’s existence, with the latest edition garnering awards recognition and the eighth volume appearing as Undertow’s first 2020 publication.
For years, Kelly has been finding authors in small magazines, online and in print – and while Undertow is a Canadian small-press success story, Kelly isn’t willing to let borders dictate what he’s going to publish. “I have published Canadian authors – Simon Strantzas, and Helen Marshall, and this year I’m publishing Richard Gavin. But I don’t do enough to get grant money, and I sort of want to publish what I want to publish.” Strantzas is a Canadian weird-fiction fixture, and his contribution to Shadows and Tall Trees 8 is definitively weird: “The Somnambulists” is the story of a hotel constructed from collaborative dreams. It’s a fantastical concept anchored by banality – a Ministry hotel inspector is being taken on a tour of the hotel – but even the dullness of the inspector’s official function doesn’t protect him from the creeping atmosphere of the place, and the possibility that his own family may be deeply involved in the dream that he is touring.
In selecting individual stories and collections, Kelly lets excitement guide him, as it did in the case of Kay Chronister, a young American writer whose first collection emerges from Undertow in March.
“Kay published a story I read online in a magazine called Shimmer that’s not around anymore. It was called ‘The Fifth Gable,’ and it knocked me flat. Last year, she had a story appear in Black Static, called ‘Roiling and Without Form.’ So I reached out to her, and asked her if she had any others, and she did.” Chronister’s stories, wide-ranging as they are, often seat horror in patriarchal traps of marriage and domestic expectations, while other elements in the same stories draw on horror mainstays such as witchcraft and or hereditary curses. As with other Undertow books, it’s the prose – in Chronister’s case, rich, descriptive, clean and never-purple prose – that melds horror elements that could work in a Hammer film with thematic content that would be at home in a New Yorker short story.
Kelly’s patience in growing his publishing list from year to year has also helped him wait on authors he particularly wanted. Priya Sharma, a UK-based writer who also works as a doctor, had been publishing stories for almost a decade before Undertow Press put out her first collection, All the Fabulous Beasts. “I was bugging her for years, then I gave up,” Kelly says. “Then, eventually, she emailed me. That book did very well.” Sharma’s collection won both the British Fantasy Award and Shirley Jackson Award, and the book is Undertow’s best-selling single-author collection.Unable to offer the large advances of a trade publisher, Kelly is also emphatic about leaving all ancillary rights with his authors. “We don’t take any audio rights, film rights – some of these presses grab everything they can.” In an era where industries from podcasts to film are hungry for intellectual property, keeping these rights author-exclusive matters, and Undertow’s books have attracted the interest of scouts from Netflix, among other companies.
“I’ve never put any commercial thinking into the press. I don’t look at a writer and think I want to publish them because they’ll sell a lot of books. I publish books that I want to read.” In addition to Haig, the Undertow team is rounded out by two family members – Courtney Kelly, Michael’s publishing-program graduate daughter, who works on typesetting, interior layout and design, and Carolyn Macdonell-Kelly, Michael’s wife, who takes on proofreading and bookkeeping duties, in addition to joining him in the ever-important sales efforts of the press. Kelly is currently trying to buck the enforced reliance that many small presses have on a particular online behemoth.
“I have to sort of play ball with Amazon, which drives me crazy, but otherwise the books don’t get any distribution. As a small press, I’m sending out stuff to independent bookstores all the time, trying to get them to stock the books … percentage-wise, probably about 70 per cent of my sales are Amazon. I do have quite a few loyal customers – my e-mail list is close to 1,000 – and I have loyal readers who will buy all of my stuff directly.”
Kelly is excited to expand the range of horror subgenres Undertow publishes, moving beyond the subtle, literary weird that they are known for. Kelly describes a forthcoming collection by Steve Topes as “visceral, straight-out horror. Not really what I usually publish, but he does it so well. The writing is so descriptive, I liked it.” And Undertow is contributing to a longstanding horror subgenre with a coming collection of ghost stories from A.C. Wise, a Canadian who lives in the United States. Wise was excited at the chance to have a book with a press she’d long admired. “Simply put, Undertow publishes gorgeous books. When Michael approached me about doing a collection, I jumped at the chance, knowing the care that goes into everything he produces.”
Coinciding with Kelly’s full-time commitment to Undertow is a change in how the press sources its publications: They recently opened to submissions for the first time, and received hundreds of manuscripts. But Kelly’s efforts to move toward publishing novels instead of the short fiction that the press established itself with have not been altogether successful, yet. “We got hundreds of submissions, and only three of them were novels. We’re known for our short-story collections [and our anthologies], so that’s what we got. We were surprised, because we specifically asked for novels and novellas. Three novels, two novellas … and the rest were short-story collections.”
What hasn’t changed is Undertow’s selection process, as Kelly admits. “We ended up taking one novella and three short-story collections. We didn’t like any of the novels … and by ‘we,’ I mean me.”

After more than 40 years, the red, white and blue letters of the Fred Segal sign that had graced the ivy-covered brick building at the corner of Los Angeles’ Melrose Avenue and Crescent Heights Boulevard was recently taken down. The navy blue–and–white lettering of Ron Herman was posted in its place on Oct. 2.
That sign was a significant symbol for Los Angeles fashion. The building, at 8100 Melrose Ave., was the address of a cradle of high-end Los Angeles boutique retail. Since 1965, consumers, celebrities and influential stylists looking for cutting-edge fashion shopped there, and many in California fashion started their careers there.
For the first time in the history of that building, Ron Herman is the only boutique retailer doing business at that address. Its neighbor, Ron Robinson, closed its bricks-and-mortar shop in 2019. The family of Fred Segal, the man who founded the Fred Segal compound of shops at that address, sold his intellectual property and trademarks in 2012. Then, in 2016, the Fred Segal brand opened a new flagship in West Hollywood. Big changes recently came to Ron Herman, which has been in business since 1976.
With no public announcement, Ron Herman sold his company to the Japanese holding company Sazaby League Ltd. for an undisclosed amount in 2019. Sazaby runs more than 20 Ron Herman stores in Japan. The Japanese company had partnered with Herman more than a decade ago. These shops offered Japanese-only product lines such as a unique Vans collaboration and a limited-edition Ron Herman Toyota FJ Cruiser vehicle. Herman and his wife, Carol, served as consultants until January 2020 and then left the company. Ron Herman had been looking for a successor. His children were not interested in taking over the business. However, he had been working with Sazaby for a decade. He believed that the Japanese company not only understood the retailer’s DNA, but they had the passion and professionalism to bring Ron Herman into a new era.
“It’s a natural evolution,” Herman said. “I felt secure and grateful to find someone who could do that.” Herman said of what he believed to be a seamless transition from his helming of the company to new ownership. Herman is not currently involved with fashion or retail projects. To get involved with a new fashion project, it would have to be something that he deemed the market and society specifically needed.
Since then, James Quirk, who has worked as a Ron Herman salesperson, buyer and store director, has been helping run operations in the United States. He currently serves as Ron Herman’s general manager and director of operations. The retailer’s U.S. operations include the two-story, 14,000-square-foot Melrose flagship as well as women’s boutiques in Los Angeles’ upscale Brentwood neighborhood and in Malibu, Calif. Also part of this boutique operation is the e-commerce shop ronherman.com.
Ron Herman’s chief operations officer, Jenny Hodge, and Toshi Fujita, its vice president, have presided over hiring a new team, who started their jobs a couple of months before the COVID-19 shutdown. The new slate includes Ami Lasser, who joined as the new women’s buyer. She has worked as a stylist and buyer for more than 20 years and started her career at Ron Herman. Ruben Leal, who co-founded the popular Venice Beach boutique Tradesman, joined Ron Herman as its men’s buyer. Kyle Moffett, the new director of e-commerce, joined in August. Quirk said that Moffett will be developing the scope of ronherman.com and adding more editorial. Industry leaders will be retained as advisers. One adviser will be John Moore, a co-founder and chief creative officer of the Outerknown brand. Another will be Hannah Henderson, co-owner of the General Store in Venice, Calif.
The pioneering retailer’s change of leadership takes place during a time of great change for the retail business and society. Quirk said that Ron Herman would chart a course to forge new ventures for the retailer. However, the new team also has been working diligently to retain the company’s personality and aesthetic, which grew out of the sensibilities of the company’s founder.
In a 2018 interview with California Apparel News, Herman called his aesthetic an “elegant simplicity.” It was one of the first stores that could mix high and low fashion, designer and denim, as well as whimsical and street styles. Its retail price points range from $45 for a T-shirt to $2,500 for high-end designer pieces and more than $8,000 for jewelry.
Ron Herman set a template for California fashion, said Nicole Pollard Bayme, a stylist and CEO for the LaLaLuxe company.
“Before laid-back, California blogger style was the rage. Those in the know could head to Ron Herman for the best selections of denim and sweats that L.A. had to offer,” she said. Her company organizes fashion tours of Los Angeles, and Ron Herman has long served as a stop on LaLaLuxe routes.
Ron Herman’s aesthetic has kept people coming back to the store for decades and made the boutique a retailer whose influence continues to be felt, Quirk said.
“He’s done everything so well. It has been consistent for so long. It is in our DNA. So for everything I do, I’m thinking, ‘Would Ron appreciate and embrace this decision?’” Quirk said.
Like other retailers, Ron Herman has grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic. Its bricks-and-mortar business shut down on March 13 and reopened in early June. During this time, a remodel was rolled out.
An independent footwear store, Gregory’s, had moved out of its space next to the first level of Ron Herman. Ron Herman extended its women’s wing and added footwear on the second floor, Quirk said. “For the first time, we carry shoes. It’s been a dream of ours,” he said. “We’ve never been able to style a head-to-toe, complete look.”
The retailer also opened an in-store jewelry salon. Eyewear company Oliver Peoples opened a separate shop in the bungalow building separate from the Ron Herman store.Throughout the location, interiors were spruced up, and the interiors have a brighter, airier ambience.
The landing area between a staircase leading to the second floor will be dedicated to new ventures. In November, it will serve as the site of holiday shop-in-shops for Los Angeles brands such as Camp High, a basics brand with a whimsical sense of humor; Soyer, a women’s contemporary knits brand; and I’m OK! by Larry Schaffer, aka Mr. Gift, who founded a Los Angeles gifting and homeware line.
Another upcoming project will be to further develop Ron Herman’s private-label clothing brands. Sazaby Private Label Coordinator Yoshie Yanagi has been working on developing more Ron Herman lines such as the upcoming RHLA sustainable-cashmere line.
The new leadership team for Ron Herman will have some big shoes to fill. Ron Herman is still known as a shop that gambled on new lines such as Juicy, True Religion as well as Trina Turk and J Brand, which came to dominate retail, said John Eshaya, founder of the JETJohn Eshaya brand, who worked at the retailer beginning in 1984 and left in 2008 as its vice president and women’s buyer.
“To be in Ron Herman in the ’90s meant that your line was going to be seen by the buyers of every department store and every specialty store as well as every designer and every actor. You would become a star,” Eshaya said. “Everyone’s eyes were on Ron Herman.”

Lady Antebellum Formally Changes Name To Lady A And Sues a Black Artist To Do It
By Ariana Wheeler, Hamilton College Class of 2023
July 24, 2020
Tumblr media
Country trio, dubbed Lady Antebellum, have recently decided to drop the latter half of their group name, shortening it to “Lady A”--which is a nickname they have employed in recent years. The band announced on Instagram, “We’ve watched and listened more than ever these last few weeks, and our hearts have been stirred with conviction, our eyes opened wide to the injustices, inequality and biases black women and men have always faced and continue to face every day. Now, blind spots we didn’t even known existed have been revealed...After much personal reflection, band discussion, prayer and many honest conversations with some of our closest black friends and colleagues, we have decided to drop the word ‘antebellum’ from our name and move forward as Lady A, the nickname our fans gave us almost from the start.” [1] The band’s original name was originally inspired by group photos taken in front of a home with antebellum architecture, however the word “antebellum” is connotated with nostalgia for the pre-civil war era, which evidently was a time during which black Americans were enslaved.
Despite the positive intentions of the name change, there are unexpected negative implications that have accompanied the band’s decision. There is a Seattle Blues Singer that has been going by Lady A since the eighties. Anita White, a 61 year old black woman, has been playing the blues under the name Lady A for twenty years. She began her career as a gospel performer in church and adopted Lady A on karaoke nights. “She’s released multiple albums with the name, and on top of her day job working with Seattle Public Utilities, she’s gearing up to release another album, Lady A: Live in New Orleans, on her birthday on July 18th.” [2] White is frustrated with the irony of this group of all white singers deciding to change their name in light of discussions surrounding modern day racism, and doing so while taking the name of another black performer.
The main legal issue with this conflict is possible trademark infringement. “Just like other goods and services in the marketplace such as Nike or McDonald’s, band names can be protected under trademark law,” explains intellectual-property attorney Wesley Lewis. Bob Celestin, a longtime music attorney, emphasizes that whoever uses the name first is what matters, regardless of the size of one’s audience. If Anita White had Lady A registered as a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office then she can sue for infringement. Even if she hadn’t trademarked it formally, she can still make a common law argument using commercial evidence (posters, records, tour flyers, etc). [3]
Despite conversations being held between Anita White and the band formerly known as Lady Antebellum, the band ultimately moved forward to sue White for her use of the name. She and her team had apparently demanded a $10 million payment. According to the lawsuit, “Lady A” became an official nickname and trademark of the band beginning in 2011, and while White had been employing the name since 2010, her Spotify listeners per month amounted to 166, versus the seven million that listened to the band each month. Ultimately, there has not been a conclusive ruling, but it seems that a band with much more name recognition and power in the music industry is inherently at an advantage in winning the rights to use the name. The band chose to change their name to address the white privilege and inherent racist connotation behind the word Antebellum. Yet, they are trying to surmount a black woman in order to make that statement. Whether or not this contradiction will matter in the end is still unknown. [4, npr article]

Blockchain continues to rock the music industry
With all the excitement surrounding blockchain and token economies (tokenization) - there is a unique angle and market which receives minimal coverage-helping independent music artists unlock new financing opportunities, without having to sacrifice their ownership rights and contract rights, including control of future royalties to intermediaries and recording companies.
Token economies recognize and reward fans for coming to the stage and utilizing services. On this stage, an artist is able to sell tokens to fans directly in order to raise funds for creative projects. By leveraging and utilizing smart contracts, artists are then able to receive immediate payouts and monies generated from the song, rather than waiting months or even years to see their hard work paid off.
In The Digital Age, What's The Stage Fright About?
It's straight up tough for Indie artists. The main focus for a musician is ultimately to make great music and be a great live performer. However, in today's digital age, in order to be a successful independent artists (-Indie"), it's difficult to rise above the noise and be recognized by recording companies. It's no longer about having an impressive portfolio and streaming numbers-it's about being heard and the brand strategy.
Educating Yourself On Promotion, Social Media, and Numbers
In a previous interview I had with Matthew Sorum, the drummer for The Velvet Revolver and former drummer for Guns N' Roses, he told me that in order to be successful, artists need to -educate [themselves] on everything [they] need to know in the digital world-how to promote yourself, your music, and be a real contender in your social aspects."
-The first question recording companies ask is what [their] social media numbers are. It's not about the music anymore, which is what bothers me about the 'new' music industry," said Sorum.
To truly reach scale and optimize time, artists need capital to build a strong network and to have a competent team around them. One path of achieving this is getting into an agreement with a record label. In exchange for a percentage of future royalties, publishing, touring, and merchandise revenue, and potentially creative control (based on the contract terms), record labels provide the necessary financing for a project, and the promotional muscle for better placement opportunities in order to cut through the noise (and of course maximize the return on their investment).
But while this may be -okay" for some artists, it is a career killer for many smaller indie artists. Why? They may lack the traction, recognition, legal knowledge, and numbers that may provide them with leverage in any negotiation.
Consequently, smaller artists may unknowingly enter predatory agreements, or give up full creative control. For many promising musicians, the logistical side of the business douses the flames of passion and creativity, and bad contracts become extremely destructive.
Enter 'Smart Contracts'
Music labels provide value in many ways, but they also can be intermediaries that take advantage of young musicians that have limited leverage or business knowledge. For resource constrained musicians, decentralization and tokenization may help finance their independent projects by harnessing the greatest power of all-the bond between artist and fan.
This is why smart contracts are the way to go. It removes the intermediary from the equation, connecting the artist with the fan, directly.
Tokenization Can Harness The Bond Between Artist and Fan to Unlock New Financing Opportunities For Resource Constrained Musicians
Tokenization is the process of converting intellectual property (e.g. rights to a song) into digital tokens with an underlying value. Similar in how owning shares of a stock grant you ownership rights in a company, tokens can allow a person to share a -piece" or percentage of a song's rights, while receiving money accrued from it. Payments pushed through tokens are facilitated through secure and transparent smart contracts that are built atop the blockchain.
Secure P2P Transactions
The advent of blockchain allows for secure peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions without the need of intermediaries such as banks, publishing services, or music labels facilitating the transaction. By having this digital ledger which is self-governing, it makes the potential for fraudulent transactions or predatory negotiations less likely to occur. At the end of the day, it's all about transparency.
-Tokenization allows fans to be active participants in an artist's creative work and share in the success of a project," said A-Rayz, one of the first tokenized hip-hop producers. -With this new model of vested fan interest in the success of a song, smaller independent artists can unlock new opportunities for fan relationships, brand evangelism, and marketing - with their fans essentially leading the charge as street teams."
Crowdfunding In A New Era
Through tokenization, artists are able to crowdfund their projects by issuing and selling tokens to fans who passionately believe in the artist's creative work (think of Kickstarter). This money enables an artist to record, mix/master, pay for music videos, cover touring and other expenses associated with the creation. By owning tokens, fans share in the success of their favorite artists-talk about a new level of support. If the song does really well and generates a lot of money, the fan receives a proportional payout.
Traditional Distribution Model For Artists-Music Labels
Tokenized Model With Blockchain
Indie Artists Have Already Begun Building Their Tokenized Music Ecosystems
International House Music DJ, Gareth Emery -Choon
-For me, the next evolution of the music industry is one where music is accessible and easy to get hold of, like it is now," said Emery in a previous interview I had with him. -[But] at the same time, one where content creators are getting compensated for their work, not the intermediaries laying claim to most of the income. Let's not try and build on the infrastructure we currently have; it's not a stable platform to build on. Almost any attempt to modernize the music industry has failed due to the large number of stakeholders."
Emery told me last week that one of the positives Choon has brought to the space since its launch is that those artists who are using the service, love receiving royalty statements each day. "The platform has grown super fast, adding over 100 artists each day to the waiting list and over 100 new tracks uploaded per day," said Emery. In terms of challenges, it's a matter of scalability. "We've already outgrown our initial home page, and are frantically building better curation tools so listeners can find the music they want," Emery told me. "It's a good problem to have, and doing everything we can to scale."
Gramatik -GRMTK Token
Gramatik (GRMTK), better known as Denis Jašarević, wants to create financial stability for artists to create unlimited amounts of content, and is on his way to do so, having already raised $9 million in funds. -I just want to release my own music whenever I want, on my own terms," said the artist. -I want to get rid of all that bureaucracy. I just want to make music. Living in a world that's owned by banks and corporations, blockchain technology is pretty much the only thing that gives me hope for the future."
Casey Pearl - The PEARL Token
-I think the tokenized ecosystem is such a great and potentially life changing technology for so many people that I really want it to succeed," Pearl said. -To have the opportunity to be one of the people who can test, and hopefully prove it works is very exciting. I am so glad that I get to be involved in something that genuinely interests me, and that involves sharing and making music. It's brilliant! I am of course a little nervous too..."
A-Rayz -ARAYZ Token
-Tokenization allows fans to be active participants in an artist's creative work and share in the success of a project," said the artist. -With this new model of vested fan interest in the success of a song, smaller independent artists can unlock new opportunities for fan relationship, brand evangelism, and marketing - with their fans essentially leading the charge as street teams."
