"From skewed blues opener "Sure ’Nuff ’N’ Yes I Do" to the menacing psychedelia of closer "Autumn’s Child," "Safe as Milk" still ranks among the most ambitious debuts in rock. Issued on Buddah in late summer ’67, it had the trappings of the psychedelic age, from the fisheye lens photograph to inventive studio trickery. If America enjoyed the summer of love, however, Beefheart ushered in a winter of discontent, presaging the death of hippie ideals."

Album #81: “Safe as Milk” by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (1967)

in my mind, i’ve always lumped Captain Beefheart in the same realm as Frank Zappa: outsider music skirting up to (and in many cases, tearing apart) the fringes of popular music. but in many ways, the two are polar opposites: Zappa hews much closer to the techniques and disciplines of Jazz, Beefheart much looser, simpler, straighter blues rock.

i know Beefheart exclusively by reputation, and was expecting something much more Zappa-esque than what is presented here. is this humble beginnings or are my impressions of Beefheart misplaced? either way i really enjoyed this record. it is a weird record, though it feels sincere, not cynical or comical. i enjoyed it. i’m sure we’ll see more from Beefheart down the line.
