im once again thinking of taylor uses marriage in her songs as not literally but more metaphorically to show us, the reader/listener, what she was giving and promising. cause in high infidelity she says “dragged my feet right down the aisle” which is definitely her picking a guy at the age of 25 to settle down with because that’s what everyone wanted but her choosing wrong and her being stuck cause if she broke up with him it’s all “when’s the new album taylor?” and “she can’t keep a man” and so then we get stuff like the infamous locket post i posted earlier saying “one year down”, like she just ran a marathon.
like she was talking about this relationship as like “i’m doing it i’m doing it” and not “i’m in love”… and then you hear stuff like “lock broken, slur spoken” “your picket fences sharp as knives” or even her describing being with him long term (marriage) as suffocating and draining and she felt herself slowly dying praying for something, praying for attention it love from his person she now has to be with for life… like “dragged my feet right down the aisle” “at the house lonely” “wait by the door like i’m just a little kid” “my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hands taking mine, but it’s been promised to another” “walking all over my piece of mind, in the shoes i gave you as a present” “you said i was free loading” and so much more i can’t type out cause my phones dying so tumblrs being a butt about my typing speed.
but it just makes you think… what was it like behind closed doors? what was he saying or doing to her? we know from interviews that he didn’t like going to award shows with her unless he was nominated cause he was intimidated by her. so the reference to marriage we hear in folklore and evermore (and on high infidelity) are more about this idea of being trapped in a loveless marriage by outside forces, in both instances of fake and real marriage divorce is almost like being shunned by society and shamed for it since you promised your life to each other… and she was like “no more dating around i settled down… oh wait no wrong guy”
but then when we hear references on lover it’s more sweet. like “i take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover” and the final bridge of its nice to have a friend have it been more like, she’s willing to commit to him cause she’s seen what will come of a committed relationship to someone, she knows what can be said if it doesn’t work, but she isn’t worried this time cause she picked right
i don’t think i’m explaining it right but just… taylor using marriage as more of a metaphor for her life rather than actually being married is so interesting cause marriage is supposed to be this symbolic bond between two people of love forever but it’s being used here to both trap her but also be freeing to her in other relationships

Sometimes I forget Hiddleswift existed and then it all slowly comes back to me...the Met Gala awkward dancing, the Rock photos, everyone collectively losing their goddamn minds, the media in meltdown, Calcium Hoebag’s head exploding and twitter meltdown, the fandom being introduced to Tom’s fandom (cringe), the Selena Gomez concert, the Fourth of July tank top saga, the meeting his mum and going for a stroll on the beach after dating for two hot minutes, the yellow sundress in Rome (!), the inception of paparazzi taking photos of Tom Hiddleston taking photos of Taylor Swift at the Colosseum (there’s a whole essay here omg), the Australian media wetting their panties when Taylor came here and them being a national embarrassment, waking up to Taytay cam on every Australian breakfast show (my life was never more surreal), Tom Hiddleston having to do a mini impromptu press conference every morning about Taylor while the poor man was just trying to go jogging on the beach, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo being asked about Taylor on radio, the cute blue overalls with white sweater outfit, the break up news, some batshit Tom fans literally being sent over the edge by Taylor daring to continue existing, some batshit Taylor fans continue to insist they were secretly dating, Tom’s GQ interview (which quite frankly led me to worry about his lasting psychic scars) and finally, Taylor’s response to said interview, Getaway Car. Wow, Taylor was really inspired and totally correct when she wrote, “it was the best of times / the worst of crimes”

Ik you’re right, i wish people would realize that yeah she probably was happy at some point with calcium hoebag before he turned out to be a total douche “turn sweet again” again as in it was before but it turns out he wasn’t. Like someone who hurt you could have also been a previous source of happiness
and like... that’s not the point though. the point is that she was happy during the 1989 era, which she started off single (same for red). and the thing that trips me up the most is people acting as if single taylor was deeply unhappy. and i think the start of the 1989 era is the most magical to me and the one i still deeply relate to in the sense that i am happy single. and the fact is that... taylor swift doesn’t need a man to make her happy. she can be happy independent of those men. that’s my point.

i’m thinking about dear reader again and how the first half is 1989 taylor kind of just having her life fall apart but she was this role model to everyone and couldn’t show it
and then we get taylor currently in the second verse with advice that’s better like “bend when you can snap when you have too” (know which battles to pick), “the greatest if luxuries is your secret” (i explain it in this ask i sent to jamie’s blog when she was talking about it), but the thing i’m just most stuck on is “dear reader when you aim at the devil make sure you don’t miss” cause that line is clearly about JM from taylor dubbing him that title in WCS but there’s so much more to it than just “when you aim, make sure you don’t miss” because taylor has said “i am very aware of how different my life would be if i wasn’t famous” and i just know she’s probably aware of just how much damage JM did to her career because of dear john.
(while i have been a swiftie for awhile i did not join until beginning of red/end of speak now so some of what i’m going to say is what i’ve heard second hand)
like after dear john was released JM was upset about what taylor was saying about him and spoke on it in interviews about how it humiliated him. but instead of him reflecting he took that anger out on taylor and that then spiraled into the infamous “taylor only writes songs about breakups” “taylor can’t keep a man” “when will taylor write a song about her being the problem” which lasted through most of the RED era and is a big cause into taylor being so media cautious and conscious during 1989 and her trying to be perfect. and that then led to all the fall out (calcium hoebag, kimye phone call, fair weathered friends leaving her, etc). which then led to joe and we know the rest.
but all of that came about because taylor dated JM, wrote a song about how he hurt her, and him turning that against her. like she missed her shot and it spiraled her life out of control.
so having the “dear reader when you aim at the devil” bit in the current taylor is also her being more conscious of what battle to pick and fight, but it also indicates she wants revenge. she wants the people who hurt her to pay the toll and she’s warning us not to attempt it until we know it’s the right shot…
idk i’m just thinking thoughts again about dear reader cause it makes me insane

the speed at which swifties will call taylor’s exs by certain nicknames to identify them so we never say the name again is truly remarkable.
anyway, hey yogurt shop boy.

do you think there is a Getaway Car like song on TTPD?
i saw your asking this on other blogs but my answer will be kinda similar, it depends on what you mean by a getaway car like song.
are you talking sound or story or fan favorite wise? cause i think sound and fan favorite is a given. but the story is more interesting because i think a part of why songs like getaway car and high infidelity are so beloved and fan favorites is because they are a story that taylor not only acknowledges wrong doing in situations, her using TH to get out of the relationship and dragging him into this whole situation that wasn’t good. and high infidelity of her feeling guilty for cheating but also doing it for herself to save herself (i’m explaining it wrong).
they’re also more open and shut stories. the public knows what happened and has formed an opinion and this is her take, but it’s a full story time line. which i think works very well for that relationship cause it was shorter than most and even if we get a glimpse of calcium hoebag on those songs and that relationship it’s still full of tiny details that paint a full story (“Storm coming, good husband/Bad omen/Dragged my feet right down the aisle” she was forcing herself into this long term relationship and found herself marching into death by way of being with him “forever” because on the outside he seems like a good guy but inside bad things occur. “at the house lonely, good money/I'd pay if you'd just know me/Seemed like the right thing at the time” tells us that the relationship was very lonely and he wasn’t giving her any affection and she’s literally saying she’d give anything to be loved by him, even paying for it, and is regretting this whole thing because the relationship seemed like a good idea in the beginning to settle down to appease the media but it all came crashing down and she was stuck. tiny details like that that give us a full story)
so if you mean story wise, i think their could be a song like that on ttpd if taylor could fit a cohesive story in a track like getaway car or high infidelity. it doesn’t necessarily need to be about m*tty, though it could be, but it just kinda depends on how it’s approached.
so it’s a definite possibility but i don’t know for sure because taylor hasn’t said a peep sound wise so we know nothing. and even if there was she’ll never make it a single so 😭
