The nose is fresh sage and wild strawberry (sauvage fraise for all you Francophiles out there). On the palate, it goes towards the one type of orange my wife hates (blood orange, how was I to know?) and a finish of crushed violets. As the bottle warms up, quince and fresh pear contribute to the delight. I suggest serving with grilled vegetable tossed with olive oil, basil, and some sliced almonds. 91 Points Bodegas Montecillo 2009 Rioja Gran Reserva Montecillo is a standard in the world of Rioja, and I’ve reviewed their wines on many occasions in the past decade. This bottle offers up scents and flavors of an old farmhouse: firewood, saddle, and dried flowers. The palate is soft and rich, with notes of dark fruit and earth. The finish turns towards espresso and allspice. 90 Points Concha y Toro 2015 “Marques de Casa Concha” Carmenere Marques de Casa Concha is one of the only brands I trust to work with Carmenere. That is largely due to the varietal fingerprint of this grape. Those notes of tobacco are extreme. They can easily push towards dirty-old-ashtray or wet-cigarette flavors which are a real turn-off. However, cooler high-altitude regions like Peumo –where this Carmenere is sourced from– can push that leafy note towards something closer to mint. On the nose, a big whomp of dark fruit and smokey eucalyptus. The palate is elegant and muscular, with soft notes of chocolate pushing against velvet tannins and supple cassis. A savage and earthy finish adds some intrigue. 90 Points Vine Cliff Winery 2014 Chardonnay Los Carneros Vine Cliff has a beautiful 20-acre vineyard on the Napa side of Carneros, and it’s a Chardonnay Shangri La. The vines are 20 years old and a healthy array of modern and old-school clones. Honeysuckle and cream on the nose with a deep ripe pear note. Medium to full-bodied, the butterfat richness is balanced with an undercurrent of fresh acidity that rises to the surface like a caramel apple. The finish moves towards vanilla and cinnamon. 91 Points Villa Cafaggio 2013 Chianti Classico When writing the review of this exceptional wine, I realized every word I used started with a “C”, so here you go: Cafaggio Chianti Classico has aromas of cherry and cinnamon, with a chewy palate of cardamon and cassis. The finish offers up classic varietal fingerprints and a note of Chamomile. Cheerio! 90 Points Poggio Stella 2011 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva In the glass, this shows up ruby-red with aromas of wildflowers and quince. A note of burnt leather is layered into a spicey attack that ends with fennel and cherry. The texture is lush despite the delicate freshness and medium-bodied frame. There is a touch of age on this wine, coming out as orange marmalade and toasted almond on the finish—an outstanding Sangiovese. 90 Points Chateau Los Boldos 2015 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon A nice whiff of tobacco follows the aromas of fig and cigar box. A medium-weight wine with plenty of grip and extraction, green olive and graphite notes show this to be a pitch-perfect Cabernet Sauvignon. He’d always wanted to fly but he’d never thought he’d become a bird. That’s where he was at the moment, feeling the feathers come in–slowly, softly, from light hairs on his arms to wings. He was brown and gray. A sparrow. The most common thing.

“Uh, you left your door open.”

Logan turned, his leg braces clattering, and the pain returned sharply then dimmed again. “Remind me to get a dog.”

With most people, he’d be on the defensive. Watching and ready, ever ready, to engage. Fennel was nothing, a side character, played by an actor no one’s name would remember after the movie. He had no idea what he was doing in his house but the odds were good that a) he wasn’t going to murder him, b) set him up for murder, or c) prove to be a magical being who could fix his body and mind with a single tap of his fairy wand. So he let him do whatever it was that he was doing. It wouldn’t affect him at all.

“I brought you some lunch.”

Wallace crouched down in front of him, blocking the TV screen. Logan sighed and tried to look past him. It was too hard, everything was too hard.

“I’m not hungry.”

“Just sandwiches. I wasn’t sure what you liked to eat.”

“Air. No. I was about half a blue pill away from becoming a bird. So worms maybe?”

Wallace unpacked the food on his coffee table. Wrapped sandwiches, cans of soda, Gatorade, an apple.

“You want to eat worms?”

“It’s this thing, these painkillers…you feel a transformation coming on, and the whole picture is hazy. Like a vaseline smeared lens. I’m on my way to being a bird. I’ll be able to fly.”

“Logan, you need to eat.”

“Did Veronica put you up to this Florence Nightingale act? Doesn’t she know you’re likely to poison the vittles? It’s almost like she can’t be bothered to pay attention anymore. Tsk, tsk.”

The television was on an infomercial and his bedroom set was on as well, the same channel, only with a three second delay. Knives cutting through cans. Cans. Cutting. Cans. His mirth had an echo. Tsk. Veronica.

“I came on my own. You didn’t look so good when I saw you yesterday.”

“Oooh, have you come to dissuade me from purchasing drugs from 5th year Neptune High seniors? But they have the best deals.”

“Is that what you were doing?”

Logan sighed into his hands, then rubbed his eyes. “No. That would be a shitty kind of rock bottom, right? I have something bigger in mind for that.”

For a moment, Fennel’s face turned. Logan read a rage there that he’d never seen before. Just as quickly as he’d caught it, it was gone.

“I came because I’m worried about you.”

Logan waited for Wallace to go back, show him his teeth again. The air conditioner kicked in reminding him that he was a living person, with a little life to maintain and squander as he pleased. “Your acting sucks. Recast!”

“When was the last time you took a shower?” Wallace had moved next to him on the couch, Logan would push him away but his arms were still half-wings.

“Do me a favor, make sure you slam the door shut behind you on the way out. I’m not in the mood for any more guest appearances.”

“Or ate?”

“BYE.” He tried to stand up, but fell almost instantly, the carpet was full of crumbs and there was a marble under the couch. “That’s not mine,” he said but tried to reach for it all the same.

“Logan, you need help.”

Wallace’s eyes were too kind, his voice too soft and concerned, just like a school nurse asking you about broken bones and bruises and all the lies you’ve ever told.

“Hey. I don’t want your pity, I want your absence.”

He tried to sit up, wave Wallace away, but fell back down with a thunk. The infomercial was over and a new one was shilling Zumba. He didn’t know what was worse–the music or the fact that he was crying.

“Please. Go away.”

The ceiling gave way to wall as Wallace slowly set him upright. He was stronger than he looked.

“You’ve been working out?”

Wallace took his hand from his arm and held it, as if they were making a deal.

“You’re standing up, we’re going down the hall. I’m going to start your shower. We are going to get you in it. Then we are going to go for a drive, Lt. Echolls. I’ve got people who can help you. We’re going to get you help. Do you want help?”

Logan nodded but couldn’t stop his mouth. “If you wanted to see me naked, you could’ve just asked.”

Wallace yanked him to his feet and Logan’s laughter edged into a yowl. He fluttered his lashes and giggled into Wallace’s arms.

“Do you promise to clean all those hard to reach places?”

“How the hell did you make it through basic training without getting your ass beat?”

That was an important question and one he’d figure out the answer to someday. But for now, he wanted to have this. Tatty innuendo and Wallace’s half-hearted grousing and shame buried just deep enough that maybe he’d forget.

Traveling in California: The Central Coast – Ojai

In our continuing exploration of the California central coast, we take a short trip into the mountains to visit Ojai. Located about 15 miles from the coast and a 90 minute drive from Los Angeles, Ojai is miles away from the fast paced life of its neighbor to the south and has been a retreat for world travelers for over a 100 years. Ojai is situated in a small east-west valley, north of Ventura and east of Santa Barbara at the base of the Topatopa Mountains.

ANCIENT AND OLD TIME OJAI

The Chumash Indians have inhabited the Ojai valley for more than 10,000 years. Ojai derives its name from the Ventureño Chumash word ʼawhaý meaning “moon”. The Chumash believe “that the valley holds mystical powers and that a magnification of energy exists exuding a peaceful sacredness that can be felt. This energy that first drew the Chumash to the valley has been celebrated through the years and many believe today that Ojai is a ‘vortex’ – an unseen force that concentrates energy. Some equate this vortex to the valley’s unusual positioning in the mountain range that runs east to West and that this helps concentrate geological tremors and atmospheric energy. Others point to geology and that the stratified mountain rocks inlaid with quartz can harness energy, transmitting it along the lines of the vortex.” [1]

The area became part of the Rancho Ojai Mexican land grant made to Fernando Tico in 1837, and he established a cattle ranch. Tico sold it in 1853 without much success to prospectors searching for oil. By 1864, the area was settled. [2]

One of the things that make Ojai so charming is that almost all chain stores are restricted in the city. [3] Signage is also regulated. This provides a look of timelessness and serenity that Ojai residents and visitors appreciate. It drives tourism and creates an atmosphere that is becoming unique in our cookie cutter world. If you compare the image below from 1935 to the recent photo of Ojai above, you can detect very little change. Of course the cars are different but the city itself seems frozen in time.

OJAI AND THE HAWAII CONNECTION

Most people associate the great Hawaiian surfing ambassador Duke Kahanamoku exclusively with the islands. However Duke spent a lot of time in Southern California throughout the 1910’s and 1920’s. The Southland was equally charmed with Duke and he made many friends there and was a particular favorite of the movie colony.

In late October of 1922, the prominent Ojai resident Sherman Day Thacher, hosted Duke Kahanamoku at the school that he founded. He had invited Duke to come up from Los Angeles to give a demonstration and swimming instructions to the assembled student body in the Thacher School’s pool. In reality the pool was a crude concrete structure that was used as a fire reservoir. It was filled by a nearby creek and was rather murky and full of algae. Duke braved the elements and put on what I am sure was an amazing exhibition. In the annals of Ojai, Duke’s visit still holds a place of honor. OJAI FESTIVALS

One of the things that makes Ojai so pleasant are the festivals. The Ojai Music Festival (founded in 1947) is an annual festival of performances by some of the world’s top musicians and composers, and occurs on the first weekend after Memorial Day. Notable appearances include Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Pierre Boulez, who was festival director in 2003. “Curious audiences gather at the Ojai Music Festival each year for a transcendent musical communing in the beautiful Ojai Valley. Every Festival follows the lead of a new music director, accommodating wildly different styles and approaches.” In 2017, the festival is being conducted by Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”). He is “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” and has been voted DownBeat Magazine‘s Artist of the Year three times. He is a professor of the arts in the Department of Music at Harvard University. This should make this year’s festival lively and modern.

Its official, June is lavender month in Ojai and the Ojai Valley Lavender Festival kicks off on the 26th of the month. “Libbey Park will once again fill with mellow crowds who come for the marvelous sights, sounds and soothing aromas of the many varieties and textures of lavender and lavender products. Living lavender plants and fresh bouquets abound and vendors never fail to surprise and delight visitors with new and unique wares. Growers and producers offer talks on all things lavender. Live music, delicious food and the smell of lavender weaves a magical enchantment that will turn your day into an unforgettable experience.”

OJAI VALLEY INN AND SPA

The Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is “The” place to stay while visiting Ojai. THE OJAI SCENE

There are plenty of fun activities around Ojai that make people came back again and again. Rose Valley Falls is the tallest waterfall in the range and while it is an easy hike to the base of the 100-foot tall lower tier of the waterfall (0.8 miles round trip with 150 feet of elevation gain), it is adventure to reach the more impressive upper tier.

Traveling in California: The Central Coast – Ojai

In our continuing exploration of the California central coast, we take a short trip into the mountains to visit Ojai. Located about 15 miles from the coast and a 90 minute drive from Los Angeles, Ojai is miles away from the fast paced life of its neighbor to the south and has been a retreat for world travelers for over a 100 years. Ojai is situated in a small east-west valley, north of Ventura and east of Santa Barbara at the base of the Topatopa Mountains.

ANCIENT AND OLD TIME OJAI

The Chumash Indians have inhabited the Ojai valley for more than 10,000 years. Ojai derives its name from the Ventureño Chumash word ʼawhaý meaning “moon”. The Chumash believe “that the valley holds mystical powers and that a magnification of energy exists exuding a peaceful sacredness that can be felt. This energy that first drew the Chumash to the valley has been celebrated through the years and many believe today that Ojai is a ‘vortex’ – an unseen force that concentrates energy. Some equate this vortex to the valley’s unusual positioning in the mountain range that runs east to West and that this helps concentrate geological tremors and atmospheric energy. Others point to geology and that the stratified mountain rocks inlaid with quartz can harness energy, transmitting it along the lines of the vortex.” [1]

The area became part of the Rancho Ojai Mexican land grant made to Fernando Tico in 1837, and he established a cattle ranch. Tico sold it in 1853 without much success to prospectors searching for oil. By 1864, the area was settled. [2]

One of the things that make Ojai so charming is that almost all chain stores are restricted in the city. [3] Signage is also regulated. This provides a look of timelessness and serenity that Ojai residents and visitors appreciate. It drives tourism and creates an atmosphere that is becoming unique in our cookie cutter world. If you compare the image below from 1935 to the recent photo of Ojai above, you can detect very little change. Of course the cars are different but the city itself seems frozen in time.

OJAI AND THE HAWAII CONNECTION

Most people associate the great Hawaiian surfing ambassador Duke Kahanamoku exclusively with the islands. However Duke spent a lot of time in Southern California throughout the 1910’s and 1920’s. The Southland was equally charmed with Duke and he made many friends there and was a particular favorite of the movie colony.

In late October of 1922, the prominent Ojai resident Sherman Day Thacher, hosted Duke Kahanamoku at the school that he founded. He had invited Duke to come up from Los Angeles to give a demonstration and swimming instructions to the assembled student body in the Thacher School’s pool. In reality the pool was a crude concrete structure that was used as a fire reservoir. It was filled by a nearby creek and was rather murky and full of algae. Duke braved the elements and put on what I am sure was an amazing exhibition. In the annals of Ojai, Duke’s visit still holds a place of honor. OJAI FESTIVALS

One of the things that makes Ojai so pleasant are the festivals. The Ojai Music Festival (founded in 1947) is an annual festival of performances by some of the world’s top musicians and composers, and occurs on the first weekend after Memorial Day. Notable appearances include Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Pierre Boulez, who was festival director in 2003. “Curious audiences gather at the Ojai Music Festival each year for a transcendent musical communing in the beautiful Ojai Valley. Every Festival follows the lead of a new music director, accommodating wildly different styles and approaches.” In 2017, the festival is being conducted by Grammy-nominated composer-pianist Vijay Iyer (pronounced “VID-jay EYE-yer”). He is “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” and has been voted DownBeat Magazine‘s Artist of the Year three times. He is a professor of the arts in the Department of Music at Harvard University. Duncan is back as well and we see Veronica seeing him for who he truly is — not evil, but not prince charming. The time difference from the movie is the same, but their history is vastly different. Easier and lighter in some ways — harder and more broken in other ways. We admit we cried while reading this. A few times. But it ends very hopeful and great and twirly (code word: smut).

Rindee writes a Veronica who is slowly becoming okay with vulnerability but still holds herself together. *throws glitter in the air* GLORIOUS. 

I'm looking for a story where Veronica goes back to school for an undercover job (I think). Logan is a teacher at the school, and the case involves Weevil's family or people Weevil knew. I can't remember many details about it other than that. I think Logan uses the last name Stone and Veronica befriends a girl at school that's Weevil's niece or something.

Failed Fic Scavenger Hunt -- RESURRECTED!!!

A couple weeks ago, we attempted to find a fic for mysilverylining. Through the help of our followers, we figured out the fic was "Blood and Roses" but was long ago deleted from fanfiction and from the Veronica Mars Fic LJ page. We were devastated. To be so close to delivering a fic that had been requested only to be thwarted? Devastating. You can read more about the search here.

However, thanks to the crackerjack efforts of one jenilyn2000, this fic was discovered in another LJ! After the author deleted and purged their original account, they created a new one. Notes: An incredibly dark fic that explores Mac's thoughts on Beaver and their relationship. Very well written and super intense, though incredibly depressing.
